Effects of Bioresonance Application in Mice with Depressive-Like Behavior.

We studied the effects of bioresonance application on mice with depressive-like behavior induced by stress. A chronic mild stress model was developed in mice to monitor the effects of bioresonance application. After that, behavioral tests were performed. In the forced swimming test, the animals of the long bioresonance therapy demonstrated shorter group immobility time in comparison with mice of the stress group and stress group without therapy (animals of this group were sacrificed at the same time point as therapy groups in order to reveal a possibility of spontaneously recover in animals af

Influence of aging on chronic unpredictable mild stress-induced depression-like behavior in male C57BL/6J mice.

Depression is a common psychiatric disorder that can occur throughout an individual's lifespan. Chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) protocol is currently the most commonly used to develop an animal model of depression. Due to the variable duration and procedure of CUMS, it is difficult to reproduce and explore the mechanism of CUMS-induced depression effectively. In the present study, the CUMS-induced behavioral phenotypes were assessed in male C57BL/6J mice at the age of 9-18 weeks. The mice stressed for 3-8 weeks exhibited lower body weight as well as longer immobility time of forced sw

WS6 Induces Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis in Correlation to its Antidepressant Effect on the Alleviation of Depressive-like Behaviors of Rats.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders. However, the effective drugs for MDD have not yet been developed. WS6 is originally designed with a similar structure as Resveratrol and Pterostilbene. The present study aims to investigate the neuroprotective and ameliorating effects of WS6 treatment in a rat model of chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) induced depression. The results show that CUMS is effective in producing depressive-like behavior in rats as indicated by decreased responses in the locomotor activity, sucrose preference test and increased i

T cell responses in depressed mice induced by chronic unpredictable mild stress.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between depression and adaptive immunity has gradually attracted increasing attentions. However, no consistent conclusions have been drawn about alterations in adaptive immunity in depression. METHODS: Eight-week-old weight-matched male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model group and a control group, with twelve mice in each group. After 8-week CUMS modeling duration and depressive behavioral tests, T cell responses were evaluated at the cell, cytokine, and cell-specific transcription factor levels. Lymphocytes in

Searching for an anchor in an unpredictable world: A computational model of obsessive compulsive disorder.

In this article, we develop a computational model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We propose that OCD is characterized by a difficulty in relying on past events to predict the consequences of patients' own actions and the unfolding of possible events. Clinically, this corresponds both to patients' difficulty in trusting their own actions (and therefore repeating them), and to their common preoccupation with unlikely chains of events. Critically, we develop this idea on the basis of the well-developed framework of the Bayesian brain, where this impairment is formalized as excessive unce

Ovariectomy-induced depressive-like behavior and brain glucose metabolism changes in female rats are not affected by chronic mild stress.

The increased incidence of depression in women going through peri-menopause suggests that fluctuations in estrogen levels may increase the risk of developing depression. Nonetheless, this psychiatric disorder is likely to be multifactorial and consequently an additional trigger may be needed to induce depression in this population. Stress could be such a trigger. We therefore investigated the effect of ovarian estrogen depletion and chronic mild stress (CMS) on depressive-like behavior and brain metabolism in female rats. Approximately 2 and 9 weeks after estrogen depletion by ovariectomy, beh

Fluoxetine increases hippocampal neural survival by improving axonal transport in stress-induced model of depression male rats.

INTRODUCTION: Axonal transport deficit is a key mechanism involved in neurodegenerative conditions. Fluoxetine, a commonly used antidepressant for treatment of depression, is known to regulate several important structural and neurochemical aspects of hippocampal functions. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are still poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of chronic fluoxetine treatment on axonal transport in the hippocampus of rat stress-induced model of depression. METHODS: We have analyzed the effects of chronic fluoxetine treatment (20 mg/kg/day, 24 d

Continuity and Change in Psychopathic Traits Among School-Aged Children with Conduct Problems.

The three dimensions of psychopathic traits in childhood have been consistently associated with high levels of conduct problems among children. However, little is known about the continuity and change in psychopathic traits among children with conduct problems. This study aimed to examine the homotypic continuity and change of the three dimensions of psychopathic traits from 8 to 14 years old among 370 children (40.3% girls) who were identified at school as having conduct problems at study inception. Results supported the structural continuity of the tridimensional model of psychopathic traits

Choosing an Animal Model for the Study of Functional Dyspepsia.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder with pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen as the main characteristic. The prevalence of FD worldwide varies between 5% and 11%. This condition adversely affects attendance and productivity in the workplace. Emerging evidence is beginning to unravel the pathophysiologies of FD, and new data on treatment are helping to guide evidence-based practice. In order to better understand the pathophysiologies of FD and explore better treatment options, various kinds of animal models of FD have been developed. However, it is unc

The influence of motives on alcohol- and sex-related behaviors among female college students.

PURPOSE: Although previous studies have elucidated associations between motivations for drinking and sex as they relate to risky health outcomes among female college students, the utility of cross-domain motives (i.e., alcohol motives predicting sex-related outcomes and vice versa) in the prediction of specific alcohol- and sex-related behaviors has yet to be examined. The current study examined relations between drinking and sex motives with multiple risky alcohol- and sex-related outcomes (i.e., alcohol consumption, alcohol-related problems, alcohol consumption prior to sexual intercourse, n

Evidence of Altered Trigeminal Nociception in an Animal Model of Fibromyalgia.

OBJECTIVE: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a debilitating chronic condition that significantly affects quality of life. A strong association has been demonstrated between FM and chronic pain in the trigeminal region in clinical studies. This study was performed to evaluate the response to acute and chronic noxious stimuli applied to the facial region. METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats (250-270 g, N = 10 for each group) were used in the current study. A subchronic swim stress model was used as the animal model of FM. Anxiety-like behaviors and response to acute and chronic noxious stimuli were assayed usin

Testing native language neural commitment at the brainstem level: A cross-linguistic investigation of the association between frequency-following response and speech perception.

A current topic in auditory neurophysiology is how brainstem sensory coding contributes to higher-level perceptual, linguistic and cognitive skills. This cross-language study was designed to compare frequency following responses (FFRs) for lexical tones in tonal (Mandarin Chinese) and non-tonal (English) language users and test the correlational strength between FFRs and behavior as a function of language experience. The behavioral measures were obtained in the Garner paradigm to assess how lexical tones might interfere with vowel category and duration judgement. The FFR results replicated pre

An Integrated Recovery-oriented Model (IRM) for mental health services: evolution and challenges.

BACKGROUND: Over past decades, improvements in longer-term clinical and personal outcomes for individuals experiencing serious mental illness (SMI) have been moderate, although recovery has clearly been shown to be possible. Recovery experiences are inherently personal, and recovery can be complex and non-linear; however, there are a broad range of potential recovery contexts and contributors, both non-professional and professional. Ongoing refinement of recovery-oriented models for mental health (MH) services needs to be fostered. DISCUSSION: This descriptive paper outlines a service-wide In

The metamorphosis of adolescent hormonal stress reactivity: A focus on animal models.

As adolescents transition from childhood to adulthood, many physiological and neurobehavioral changes occur. Shifts in neuroendocrine function are one such change, including the hormonal systems that respond to stressors. This review will focus on these hormonal changes, with a particular emphasis on the pubertal and adolescent maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Furthermore, this review will concentrate on studies using animal models, as these model systems have contributed a great deal to our mechanistic understanding of how factors such as sex and experience with st

Upregulation of MAOA in the hippocampus results in delayed depressive-like behaviors in burn mice.

OBJECTIVE: To observe depressive-like behavior and hippocampus monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) changes in burned mice. METHODS: We tested depression and anxiety like behaviors of burn C57 mice with the sucrose preference test, forced swimming test (FST), open field test and elevated plus maze test and then detected the MAOA content and MAOA gene transcriptional levels in the hippocampus with western blot analysis and real-time quantitative PCR analysis. We then sought to reverse depressive-like behavior of burned mice with an MAOA inhibitor. RESULTS: (1) Mice showed depressive and anxiety like be

Occupational differences in work engagement: A longitudinal study among eight occupational groups in Norway.

The aim of the present study was to explore occupational differences in the experience of engagement both with regard to differences in the level of work engagement as well as in the predicting value of different antecedent variables. Multigroup latent mean analysis was performed on eight different occupational groups in Norway (lawyers, physicians, nurses, teachers, church ministers, bus drivers, and people working in advertising and information technology; N = 3,475). Tests for factorial invariance supported the use of the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory scale across occupational groups and that

The bidirectional associations between state anger and rumination and the role of trait mindfulness.

Rumination is associated with exacerbated angry mood. Angry moods may also trigger rumination. However, research has not empirically tested the bidirectional associations of state rumination and anger, as experience sampling methodology can do. We predicted that state anger and rumination would be bi-directionally associated, both concurrently and over time, even controlling for trait anger and rumination. In addition, because mindfulness is associated with rumination and anger at the bivariate level, we examined the effect of trait mindfulness on the bidirectional association between state ru

The Cognitive Psychopathology of Internet Gaming Disorder in Adolescence.

Adolescents are known to be an at-risk population for developing Internet gaming disorder (IGD). A recent clinical model has proposed that adolescents with IGD may endorse a unique set of maladaptive beliefs that underlie persistent and excessive involvement in Internet gaming activities. These include (a) beliefs about game reward value and tangibility, (b) maladaptive and inflexible rules about gaming behaviour, (c) over-reliance on gaming to meet self-esteem needs, and (d) gaming as a method of gaining social acceptance. A sample of 824 adolescents (402 male and 422 female) were recruited f

Stable polymorphism of cooperators and punishers in a public goods game.

The role of punishment in the maintenance of cooperation has been emphasized recently. However, the maintenance of punishment is not an obvious consequence because punishment itself is also a public good; it is costly to perform and hence vulnerable to exploitation. For example, cooperative punishers, who help others and punish free riders, are disadvantageous in competition against pure cooperators, who cooperate but do not punish free riders. In addition, pure punishers, who do not help others but punish free riders, have been considered to be selfish in conventional models, because they do
