We report herein the case of a 28-year-old man presenting with hyperglycemic chorea-ballism (HCB) in addition to mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). He was admitted to a local hospital due to weight loss, general fatigue and thirst. The patient had diabetes mellitus, with a blood glucose level of 738 mg/dl and HbA1c of 19.8%. Although insulin therapy improved hyperglycemia, he noticed involuntary movements in the right upper and lower limbs, which subsequently extended to the left side. The patient was thus transferred to our hospital. He displayed

ONCONASE(R) (ONC), previously known as P-30 Protein, is a novel amphibian protein isolated from Rana pipiens eggs/early embryos (1) which demonstrates cytostatic and cytotoxic activity against several human tumor cell lines in vitro, as well as anti-tumor activity in vivo. Animal toxicology studies in rats and dogs revealed dose-dependent weight loss, some skeletal muscle and myocardial degenerative changes, a decrease in albumin and bilirubin levels in rats, and a dose-related elevation of serum transaminases and alkaline phosphatase in both species. 1. The action and interaction of noradrenaline (NA), 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and the sympathetic innervation was studied in the isolated taenia of the guinea-pig caecum.2. Addition of 5-HT led to a contraction of the taenia while addition of NA or perivascular nerve stimulation resulted in relaxation. Responses to 5-HT or perivascular nerve stimulation were abolished by tetrodotoxin. Tetrodotoxin did not affect responses to applied NA. Hexamethonium and hyoscine converted the 5-HT response to a relaxation and augmented the relaxation which followed low frequency perivascular nerve stimulati

CONTEXT: The hip adductor and abductor muscles play vital roles as stabilizers in the lower-extremity. Their activation during soccer-specific actions is essential, but local muscular fatigue can hinder athletic performance and increase the risk of injury.
DESIGN: This study aimed to observe the variations in frontal plane hip strength in female college soccer players before and after a high-workload soccer-specific training session. Furthermore, the study sought to compare the relative changes in hip strength with the internal and external load measures obtained during that session.

INTRODUCTION: Myoelectric control of prostheses is a long-established technique, using surface electromyography (sEMG) to detect user intention and perform subsequent mechanical actions. Most machine learning models utilized in control systems are trained using isolated movements that do not reflect the natural movements occurring during daily activities. Moreover, movements are often affected by arm postures, the duration of activities, and personal habits. It is crucial to have a control system for multi-degree-of-freedom (DoF) prosthetic arms that is trained using sEMG data collected from a

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial diseases/disorders (MDs), for decades, have been identified as a key underlying condition for many chronic diseases globally. However, data on the knowledge and prevalence of MDs in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa are lacking. This study assessed the knowledge, and awareness, of MDs among senior medical doctors in the five tertiary hospitals in Ghana.
METHOD: Data were collected from one hundred and twenty-eight (128) medical doctors in the five Tertiary Hospitals in Ghana using both closed and open-ended questionnaires and analysed using descriptive statistics.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic illness that affects upward of 32% of deployed Veterans to the 1991 Gulf War (GW). The symptoms are medically unexplained, ranging across cognitive deficits, fatigue, gastrointestinal problems, and musculoskeletal pain. Research indicates that chemical warfare agents play a key role in the onset and progression of GWI. The Khamisiyah ammunition storage that housed chemical warfare agents such as sarin, an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, was demolished during the GW, releasing toxicants into the atmosphere affecting deployed troops. Exposure to other c

INTRODUCTION: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic, potentially debilitating autoimmune disease characterized by weakness and rapid fatigue of the voluntary muscles that worsens on exertion. Left untreated, MG symptoms may cause significant morbidity or even death. To date, no robust biological marker is available to follow the course of the disease. Therefore, new diagnostic approaches and biological markers are essential not only for improved diagnosis of the disease but for improved outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: The present study applied a two-control, multi-label metabolomics profiling approach as

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic muscle and skeletal system disease observed generally in women, manifesting itself with a widespread pain and impairing the individual's quality of life. FMS diagnosis is made based on the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria. However, recently the employability and sufficiency of ACR criteria are under debate. In this context, several evaluation methods, including clinical evaluation methods were proposed by researchers. Accordingly, ACR had to update their criteria announced back in 1990, 2010 and 2011. INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic heart failure (CHF) experience breathlessness and fatigue on exercise. One of the abnormalities seen on maximal exercise testing is an increased ventilatory response to exercise (VE/VCO(2) slope). The cause of this is unknown, but is likely to be due to a combination of interacting peripheral and central factors. Recent data have demonstrated a relation between VE/VCO(2) slope and prostaglandin levels in contracting muscles. The present study examined the influence of the presence of a potent non-selective prostaglandin inhibitor, aspirin, on the ventilatory

We report on a 2 1/2-year-old boy who is currently ventilated at home by positive pressure ventilation through a nasal mask during the night because of congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS). Up to age 2 he had developed normally. A reevaluation was performed because of symptoms suggestive of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), including snoring, nocturnal sweating, frequent nighttime awakenings, speech impairment, daytime fatigue, and failure to thrive. A sleep study indicated obstructive apnea episodes lasting up to 40 s and arterial desaturations below 50% during spontaneou

In spring 1996, an outbreak of Q fever occurred among residents of a rural town (population: 300) in Germany. A retrospective cohort study was conducted to ascertain the extent of the outbreak and to assess potential risk factors for illness. In July 1996, all residents > or =15 years received a self-administered questionnaire and were offered Coxiella burnetii antibody testing. Residents were considered to have probable Q fever if they had a positive result for IgM C. burnetii antibodies by ELISA or possible Q fever if they had fever > or =39 degrees C lasting >2 days and > or =3 symptoms (ch

BACKGROUND: Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) encompasses the set of clinical alterations characterised by a loss of muscular control or an incoordination in the activity of the muscles that make up this region. In the female population, the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) is between 24% and 45%, making it the most common PFD. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) occurs when there is an increase in intra- abdominal pressure, such as when coughing, sneezing or lifting heavy objects, causing involuntary urine leakage. It is common for elite gymnasts to experience an increase in intra-abdominal
