Goal Directed Worry Rules Are Associated with Distinct Patterns of Amygdala Functional Connectivity and Vagal Modulation during Perseverative Cognition.

Excessive and uncontrollable worry is a defining feature of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). An important endeavor in the treatment of pathological worry is to understand why some people are unable to stop worrying once they have started. Worry perseveration is associated with a tendency to deploy goal-directed worry rules (known as "as many as can" worry rules; AMA). These require attention to the goal of the worry task and continuation of worry until the aims of the "worry bout" are achieved. This study examined the association between the tendency to use AMA worry rules and neural and au

Complications of regional anesthesia and acute pain management.

Perioperative nerve injuries are recognized as a complication of regional anesthesia. Although rare, studies suggest the frequency of complications is increasing. Risk factors include neural, traumatic injury during needle or catheter placement, infection, and choice of local anesthetic solution. Neurologic injury due to pressure from improper patient positioning, tightly applied casts or surgical dressings, and surgical trauma are often attributed to regional anesthetic. Body habitus and preexisting neurologic dysfunction may also contribute. The safe conduct of regional anesthesia involves k

Neural mechanisms underlying action observation in adults with Down syndrome.

Results of a magnetoencephalography (MEG) brain imaging study conducted to examine the cortical responses during action execution and action observation in 10 healthy adults and 8 age-matched adults with Down syndrome are reported. During execution, the motor responses were strongly lateralized on the ipsilateral rather than the contralateral side in the Down syndrome group. Observation of movement activated a network of cortical regions that was similar to the control group; however, there was no significant peak activity in the motor areas. In addition, the overall pattern of neural activati

Serotonin modulation of moth central olfactory neurons.

In the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) acting at the level of the antennal lobes contributes significantly to changing the moth's responsiveness to olfactory stimuli. 5HT targets K(+) conductances in the cells, increasing the excitability of central olfactory neurons and their responsiveness to olfactory cues. Effects of 5HT modulation are apparent not only at the single cell level, but also in the activity patterns of populations of neurons that convey olfactory information from antennal lobes to higher centers of the brain. Evidence suggests that 5HT-induced change

Narrow duplicated internal auditory canal: radiological findings and review of the literature.

Narrow duplicated internal auditory canal (IAC) is a rare malformation of the temporal bone that is associated with ipsilateral congenital sensorineural hearing loss. This may be an isolated finding or a part of a syndrome. Radiological examination should demonstrate aplasia or hypoplasia of the neural components of the narrow IAC, to guide the surgical approach. We report a 7-year-old boy with Klippel-Feil syndrome with a narrow double IAC with no sensorineural hearing loss but with conductive hearing loss. In this patient, the IAC consisted of two separate narrow bony canals clearly seen on

Paternal occupation and anencephaly.

It has been suggested that paternal occupational exposures to pesticides and solvents increase the risk of neural tube defects in offspring. With the use of Texas livebirth, fetal death, and linked livebirth-death records, the authors conducted a population-based case-control study among 1981-1986 Texas births to examine the association between paternal occupation and anencephalic births. Fathers employed in occupations associated with solvent exposure were more likely to have offspring with anencephaly (odds ratio (OR) = 2.53), with painters having the highest risk (OR = 3.43). A lesser assoc

A long-term study of hearing in children following neonatal hyperbilirubinemia.

We conducted a long-term study of 85 children with known transient neonatal hyperbilirubinemia to determine if their hearing had been affected. None of the children had neural symptoms such as kernicterus. The children ranged in age from birth to 9 months and were studied by means of brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA). Thirty-four of the children were studied sequentially between 15 and 80 months after the initial examination. Our results showed that there was no significant correlation between serum bilirubin concentrations and BERA thresholds or latencies. These findings indicate th

Osteogenesis imperfecta congenita and tarda: a temporal bone report.

The temporal bone report of an operated case of osteogenesis imperfecta tarda is presented. Histological examination confirmed the presence of bilateral fixation of the footplate by otosclerosis as the cause of the conductive hearing loss. Fragility of bony septae in the mastoid and of the stapedial crura were observed. Sensorineural impairment in later years with a reduction in neural elements in the cochlea appear related to the extent and activity of the otosclerotic foci. Additional temporal bone reports of three cases of osteogenesis imperfecta congenita show lack of deposition of the ske

Neural Underpinnings of Social Stress in Substance Use Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Drug addiction is a complex brain disorder that is characterized by craving, withdrawal, and relapse, which can be perpetuated by social stress. Stemming from an acute life event, chronic stress, or trauma in a social context, social stress has a major role in the initiation and trajectory of substance use. Preclinical literature shows that early life stress exposure and social isolation facilitate and enhance drug self-administration. Epidemiological evidence links childhood adversity to increased risk for drug use and demonstrates that cumulative stress experiences are predictive

Induction of striatal neurogenesis and generation of region-specific functional mature neurons after ischemia by growth factors. Laboratory investigation.

OBJECT: The capacity to replace lost neurons after insults is retained by several regions of adult mammalian brains. However, it is unknown how many neurons actually replace and mature into region-specific functional neurons to restore lost brain function. In this paper, the authors asked whether neuronal regeneration could be achieved efficaciously by growth factor treatment using a global ischemia model in rats, and they analyzed neuronal long-term maturation processes. METHODS: Rat global ischemia using a modified 4-vessel occlusion model was used to induce consistent ischemic neuronal inj

Early Detection of Neural Fatigue in Clinically Healthy Postpartum Mothers Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Background Postpartum mothers often experience depressive symptoms and emotional fluctuations that can affect parenting behavior and increase the risk of child maltreatment. Previous studies have reported reduced prefrontal activation in postpartum women; however, few have clarified the temporal changes in neural activity associated with sustained cognitive load. This study aimed to detect early signs of neural fatigue in clinically healthy mothers by measuring prefrontal activation during task performance using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Methods Eight mothers at one month postpartum (

Assessment of auditory pathway microstructure in vestibular schwannoma patients: a quantitative diffusion tensor tractography study.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are cerebellopontine angle tumors that can result in cranial nerve dysfunction, most commonly sensorineural hearing loss. Conventional structural MRI is unable to provide correlative information on cranial nerve function. In this study, the authors used multitensor tractography to study the white matter microstructural properties of the auditory neural pathway as a correlate of cranial nerve function in a cohort of VS patients. They evaluated the relationship between the auditory neural pathway microstructural properties using pure-tone audiometry (PTA)

Task-based functional neural correlates of social cognition across autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Autism and schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) both feature atypical social cognition. Despite evidence for comparable group-level performance in lower-level emotion processing and higher-level mentalizing, limited research has examined the neural basis of social cognition across these conditions. Our goal was to compare the neural correlates of social cognition in autism, SSDs, and typically developing controls (TDCs). METHODS: Data came from two harmonized studies in individuals diagnosed with autism or SSDs and TDCs (aged 16-35 years), including behavioral social cognitive

Repeated intrathecal injections of peripheral nerve-derived stem cell spheroids improve outcomes in a rat model of traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of disability and mortality worldwide. However, existing treatments still face numerous clinical challenges. Building on our prior research showing peripheral nerve-derived stem cell (PNSC) spheroids with Schwann cell-like phenotypes can secrete neurotrophic factors to aid in neural tissue regeneration, we hypothesized that repeated intrathecal injections of PNSC spheroids would improve the delivery of neurotrophic factors, thereby facilitating the restoration of neurological function and brain tissue repair post-TBI. METHODS: We gener

Maternal pesticide exposure from multiple sources and selected congenital anomalies.

We explored the relation between various potential sources of maternal periconceptional pregnancy exposures to pesticides and congenital anomalies in offspring. Data were derived from a case-control study of fetuses and liveborn infants with orofacial clefts, neural tube defects, conotruncal defects, or limb anomalies, among 1987-1989 California births and fetal deaths. We conducted telephone interviews with mothers of 662 (85% of eligible) orofacial cleft cases, 265 (84%) neural tube defect cases, 207 (87%) conotruncal defect cases, 165 (84%) limb cases, and 734 (78%) nonmalformed controls. Abnormal enamel and pulp dimensions in familial dysautonomia.

In familial dysautonomia (FD), a hereditary autonomic and sensory neuropathy, somatic growth is impaired. This study was conducted to explore the possibility that tooth dimensions are altered as a consequence of neural crest dysfunction known to be present in FD. Enamel, dentin, pulp, and tooth size measurements of mandibular primary and permanent molars from FD patients were compared with those of healthy controls. It was found that although tooth size in the FD patients was smaller than normal, the enamel was thicker on the occlusal table, while the pulp chamber was smaller and disproportion
