Clinical application of artificial neural network (ANN) modeling to predict BRCA1/2 germline deleterious variants in Chinese bilateral primary breast cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral breast cancer (BBC), as well as ovarian cancer, are significantly associated with germline deleterious variants in BRCA1/2, while BRCA1/2 germline deleterious variants carriers can exquisitely benefit from poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors. However, formal genetic testing could not be carried out for all patients due to extensive use of healthcare resources, which in turn results in high medical costs. To date, existing BRCA1/2 deleterious variants prediction models have been developed in women of European or other descent who are quite genetically different

Automated prediction of early spontaneous miscarriage based on the analyzing ultrasonographic gestational sac imaging by the convolutional neural network: a case-control and cohort study.

BACKGROUND: It is challenging to predict the outcome of the pregnancy when fetal heart activity is detected in early pregnancy. However, an accurate prediction is of importance for obstetricians as it helps to provide appropriate consultancy and determine the frequency of ultrasound examinations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of the convolutional neural network (CNN) in the prediction of spontaneous miscarriage risk through the analysis of early ultrasound gestational sac images. METHODS: A total of 2196 ultrasound images from 1098 women with early singleton pregnancie

Electrocardiogram screening for aortic valve stenosis using artificial intelligence.

AIMS: Early detection of aortic stenosis (AS) is becoming increasingly important with a better outcome after aortic valve replacement in asymptomatic severe AS patients and a poor outcome in moderate AS. We aimed to develop artificial intelligence-enabled electrocardiogram (AI-ECG) using a convolutional neural network to identify patients with moderate to severe AS. METHODS AND RESULTS: Between 1989 and 2019, 258 607 adults [mean age 63 ± 16.3 years; women 122 790 (48%)] with an echocardiography and an ECG performed within 180 days were identified from the Mayo Clinic database. Moderate to se

Application of convolutional neural network on early human embryo segmentation during in vitro fertilization.

Selection of the best quality embryo is the key for a faithful implantation in in vitro fertilization (IVF) practice. However, the process of evaluating numerous images captured by time-lapse imaging (TLI) system is time-consuming and some important features cannot be recognized by naked eyes. Convolutional neural network (CNN) is used in medical imaging yet in IVF. The study aims to apply CNN on day-one human embryo TLI. We first presented CNN algorithm for day-one human embryo segmentation on three distinct features: zona pellucida (ZP), cytoplasm and pronucleus (PN). We tested the CNN perfo

Combining genetic risk score with artificial neural network to predict the efficacy of folic acid therapy to hyperhomocysteinemia.

Artificial neural network (ANN) is the main tool to dig data and was inspired by the human brain and nervous system. Several studies clarified its application in medicine. However, none has applied ANN to predict the efficacy of folic acid treatment to Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy). The efficacy has been proved to associate with both genetic and environmental factors while previous studies just focused on the latter one. The explained variance genetic risk score (EV-GRS) had better power and could represent the effect of genetic architectures. Our aim was to add EV-GRS into environmental factors

Cross-reactive immunogenicity of group A streptococcal vaccines designed using a recurrent neural network to identify conserved M protein linear epitopes.

The M protein of group A streptococci (Strep A) is a major virulence determinant and protective antigen. The N-terminal sequence of the protein defines the more than 200 M types of Strep A and also contains epitopes that elicit opsonic antibodies, some of which cross-react with heterologous M types. Current efforts to develop broadly protective M protein-based vaccines are directed at identifying potential cross-protective epitopes located in the N-terminal regions of cluster-related M proteins for use as vaccine antigens. In this study, we have used a comprehensive approach using the recurren

PURPOSE: The differentiation of the ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst directly affects the formulation of surgical plans, while the results of differential diagnosis by imaging alone are not satisfactory. This paper aimed to propose an algorithm based on convolutional neural networks (CNN) structure to significantly improve the classification accuracy of these two tumors. METHODS: A total of 420 digital panoramic radiographs provided by 401 patients were acquired from the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital. Each of them was cropped to a patch as a region of interest by radiologists. Furt

Deep learning based discrimination of soft tissue profiles requiring orthognathic surgery by facial photographs.

Facial photographs of the subjects are often used in the diagnosis process of orthognathic surgery. The aim of this study was to determine whether convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can judge soft tissue profiles requiring orthognathic surgery using facial photographs alone. 822 subjects with dentofacial dysmorphosis and / or malocclusion were included. Facial photographs of front and right side were taken from all patients. Subjects who did not need orthognathic surgery were classified as Group I (411 subjects). Group II (411 subjects) was set up for cases requiring surgery. CNNs of VGG19 w

Single-modal and multi-modal false arrhythmia alarm reduction using attention-based convolutional and recurrent neural networks.

This study proposes a deep learning model that effectively suppresses the false alarms in the intensive care units (ICUs) without ignoring the true alarms using single- and multi- modal biosignals. Most of the current work in the literature are either rule-based methods, requiring prior knowledge of arrhythmia analysis to build rules, or classical machine learning approaches, depending on hand-engineered features. In this work, we apply convolutional neural networks to automatically extract time-invariant features, an attention mechanism to put more emphasis on the important regions of the seg

Improved Prediction of Surgical Resectability in Patients with Glioblastoma using an Artificial Neural Network.

In managing a patient with glioblastoma (GBM), a surgeon must carefully consider whether sufficient tumour can be removed so that the patient can enjoy the benefits of decompression and cytoreduction, without impacting on the patient's neurological status. In a previous study we identified the five most important anatomical features on a pre-operative MRI that are predictive of surgical resectability and used them to develop a simple, objective, and reproducible grading system. The objective of this study was to apply an artificial neural network (ANN) to improve the prediction of surgical res

Screening of Heteroaromatic Scaffolds against Cystathionine Beta-Synthase Enables Identification of Substituted Pyrazolo[3,4-c]Pyridines as Potent and Selective Orthosteric Inhibitors.

Cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) is a key enzyme in the production of the signaling molecule hydrogen sulfide, deregulation of which is known to contribute to a range of serious pathological states. Involvement of hydrogen sulfide in pathways of paramount importance for cellular homeostasis renders CBS a promising drug target. An in-house focused library of heteroaromatic compounds was screened for CBS modulators by the methylene blue assay and a pyrazolopyridine derivative with a promising CBS inhibitory potential was discovered. The compound activity was readily comparable to the most potent C

The Effectiveness of the Game of Dice Task in Predicting At-Risk and Problem Gambling Among Adolescents: The Contribution of the Neural Networks.

The Game of Dice Task (GDT; Brand et al. in Neuropsychology 19:267-277, 2005a; Psychiatry Res 133:91-99, 2005b) measures decision-making under objective risk conditions. Although disadvantageous decision-making has been shown in individuals with substance dependency, such as pathological dependency, any studies have been conducted with adolescents by using the GDT to investigate the relationship between the performance on the task and gambling behavior. Moreover, all the previous studies have considered only the GDT net score and not the single choices. In the current study, focusing on adoles

Hardware Realization of the Pattern Recognition with an Artificial Neuromorphic Device Exhibiting a Short-Term Memory.

Materials exhibiting memory or those capable of implementing certain learning schemes are the basic building blocks used in hardware realizations of the neuromorphic computing. One of the common goals within this paradigm assumes the integration of hardware and software solutions, leading to a substantial efficiency enhancement in complex classification tasks. At the same time, the use of unconventional approaches towards signal processing based on information carriers other than electrical carriers seems to be an interesting trend in the design of modern electronics. In this context, the impl
