Images: Atypical resolution of sleep-related hypoventilation in congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Paired-like homeobox 2B gene variants cause congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) characterized by abnormal ventilatory control necessitating lifelong assisted ventilation (AV). We report a 3-year-old female who presented with apnea, hypoxemia, hypoventilation requiring AV, and Hirschsprung's disease during infancy followed by resolution of hypoventilation. At 3 weeks, polysomnography showed obstructive and central sleep apnea, oxygen desaturations, and hypoventilation. A novel, heterozygous, paternal-inherited 2.77-Mb deletion in chromosome 4p14-p13 resulted in deleti

Epigenetic regulation of sex: the role of DNA methylation and zbtb38 in zebrafish sex differentiation and heat-induced masculinization.

There is increasing evidence that global change can threaten biodiversity by inducing skewed sex ratios. Accumulating evidences support a role of epigenetics, mainly DNA methylation, in sex differentiation. The aim of the present work was to investigate the potential role of zbtb38, a transcriptional factor that binds to methylated promoters, in sex differentiation and/or maintenance in zebrafish. We analyzed the methylation and transcription level of zbtb38 in males, females and undifferentiated individuals raised at standard or high temperature, a masculinizing factor. Results were compared

Prolonged Exposure to Childhood Adversity and Birth Outcomes in a Bi-Generational Longitudinal Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: A higher number of exposures to different adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) has been associated with worse birth outcomes; however, the duration of ACE exposure could also negatively impact pregnancy outcomes. We sought to use a bi-generational longitudinal cohort survey to test if duration of exposure to specific types of childhood adversity exhibited a graded association with adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: The Bureau of Labor Statistics' National Longitudinal Surveys of Youth 1979 cohort was used to create bi-generational cohorts capturing the number and duration of ACE eve

Comparing the accuracy of Pipelle versus hysteroscopy and curettage in the diagnosis of chronic endometritis in women with recurrent implantation failure: A prospective cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic endometritis (CE) is defined as chronic inflammation in the endometrium; when treated, implantations significantly improve. The standard test for CE confirmation is an endometrial biopsy, but the appropriate sampling method needs to be clarified. We conducted this study to compare pipelle biopsy and hysteroscopy with curettage. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective cross-sectional study with all (40 patients) RIF patients under 40 referred to our tertiary center between December 2021, and December 2022 who underwent pipelle biopsy and hysteroscopy with curettage between days

Microarray Application in Newborns With Multiple Congenital Anomalies: Genotype-Phenotype Correlation.

BACKGROUND: Microarray is considered the first step in the diagnostic test in patients with multiple congenital anomalies (MCA). This technique can detect small copy number variations (CNVs) in DNA and help to understand the genetic causes in newborns. MATERIALS & METHODS: The present study investigated a group of 63 newborns with MCA during the study period. Microarray analysis was performed on newborns with MCA after excluding those with examination results suggesting a recognizable numerical chromosome anomaly and a history of teratogenicity. The observed CNVs were examined in databases, p

MOMMY study profile: An integrative early-life multi-omics cohort in China.

Large-scale, prospective birth cohorts capturing the complex interplay between the gut microbiome, host biology, and environmental exposures are crucial to understanding early-life health but remain scarce, particularly within Asian populations. To address this gap, we established the MOMMY cohort (The MOther-infant Microbiota transmission and its link to long terM health of babY), a large, prospective birth cohort uniquely designed to investigate maternal-paternal-infant microbiota transmission and its impact on child health within the understudied Chinese population. MOMMY aims to recruit 20

Melatonin influence on miRNA expression in sperm, hypothalamus, pre-frontal cortex and cerebellum of Wistar rats.

Melatonin is a pineal hormone synthesized exclusively at night, in several organisms. Its action on sperm is of particular interest, since they transfer genetic and epigenetic information to the offspring, including microRNAs, configuring a mechanism of paternal epigenetic inheritance. MicroRNAs are known to participate in a wide variety of mechanisms in basically all cells and tissues, including the brain and the sperm cells, which are known, respectively, to present 70% of all identified microRNAs and to transfer these molecules to the embryo. MicroRNAs from sperm have been associated with m

Heterozygous Variants of the SLC39A4 Gene and Possible Increased Risk for Developing Acrodermatitis Enteropathica with Kaposi's Varicelliform Eruption.

BACKGROUND Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by solute carrier family 39 member 4 (SLC39A4) gene variants that impair zinc absorption. Although typically associated with bacterial or fungal superinfection, its concurrence with Kaposi's varicelliform eruption (KVE) is exceptionally rare - only 1 case was previously reported. This report describes a case of KVE complicating AE in a patient with novel compound heterozygous SLC39A4 variants, highlighting the immunovirological implications of zinc deficiency. CASE REPORT An 8-year-old girl who had chron

An exploration of potential risk factors for gastroschisis using decision tree learning.

PURPOSE: Despite a wealth of research, the etiology of the abdominal wall defect gastroschisis remains largely unknown. The strongest known risk factor is young maternal age. Our objective was to conduct a hypothesis-generating analysis regarding gastroschisis etiology using random forests. METHODS: Data were from the Slone Birth Defects Study (case-control, United States and Canada, 1998-2015). Cases were gastroschisis-affected pregnancies (n = 273); controls were live-born infants, frequency-matched by center (n = 2591). Potential risk factor data were ascertained via standardized interview
