The upper and lower extreme percentiles of change in clinical variables were analyzed for a period of four years after completion of periodontal therapy in order to assess the patterns of disease recurrence after treatment. We present a retrospective analysis of 48 patients with pemphigus vulgaris (PV) who were seen between 1978 and 1988. They were divided into three treatment groups: 25 (group A) received 40-100 mg of oral prednisone daily; eight (group B) received > 100 mg of prednisone daily; 15 (group C) received 40 mg of oral prednisone every other day and azathioprine 100 mg daily. PURPOSE: The maximum effect of midazolam injected intravenously occurs in about 3 minutes. Patient-controlled sedation carried out with 1-mg increments of midazolam at 3-minute intervals provides comparable conditions to that of doctor-controlled sedation carried out with 1-mg increments at 1-minute intervals, except for the longer duration taken for the patients to achieve satisfactory sedation prior to surgery. To evaluate whether there is a refractory period (RP) after hyperventilation challenge, we compared the bronchoconstrictive response to repetitive eucapnic voluntary hyperventilation challenge with dry, room temperature air (EVH). Familial periodic cerebellar ataxia (FPCA) is a heterogeneous group of rare autosomal dominant disorders characterized by episodic cerebellar disturbance. A potassium-channel gene (KCNA1) has been found to be responsible for one of its subgroups, familial periodic cerebellar ataxia with myokymia (FPCA/+M; MIM 160120). OBJECTIVE: To compare ampicillin with and without sulbactam with respect to the effect on the latency period after preterm premature rupture of membranes (PROM).
METHODS: Patients with PROM at 25-35 weeks' gestation were offered participation in a randomized blinded trial comparing ampicillin-sulbactam with ampicillin. Evaluations for cervical pathogens were performed on admission and patients were followed-up with daily maternal and fetal evaluation. In the period 1985-1991, 21,675 infants were born at the University Hospital of Copenhagen, Hvidovre Hospital, Denmark. The effect of theophylline on periodic breathing was measured by transcutaneous oxygen monitoring in 7 patients suffering from chronic congestive heart failure. Theophylline significantly decreased the frequency of Cheyne-Stokes breathing. Transcutaneous oxygen monitoring proved to be a useful method to follow changes in the breathing pattern. The suggested mechanism of action of theophylline in reducing the incidence of periodic breathing is blockade of adenosine receptors.

PLEDs were observed in a case of undifferentiated schizophrenia, transiently during the course of recovery from hyponatremia, and diffuse EEG slowing remained even after the serum sodium had returned to normal range. It was considered that PLEDs had occurred transiently in relation to hemispheric ischemic disturbance induced by hyponatremia. The characteristics of PLEDs associated with hyponatremia will need to be studied further in more patients with hyponatremia.
