A specific molecular probe for the malignant lymphoid clone of lesions of a patient with mycosis fungoides was developed. As a clone-specific marker the junctional region of rearranged T-cell-receptor-gamma (TCR-gamma) genes was used. An oligonucleotide primer complementary to these sequences was designed. We describe three patients with benign recurrent aseptic meningitis (Mollaret's meningitis). For one of these cases, the episodes of meningitis were associated with herpetic outbreaks. Mollaret cells, which are a hallmark of Mollaret's meningitis, were present in the CSF from two of the three patients. Myocarditis is an important disease that can lead to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), we examined whether viral genomes were present specifically in the hearts of viral myocarditis or DCM patients in our autopsy series and compared the results with their clinicopathological features. Chlamydia pneumoniae was isolated from the throat swab of a 5-year-old girl with acute bronchitis. The titers of IgM and IgG antibodies to C. pneumoniae in the serum were 1:20 and 1:2560, respectively. C. pneumoniae genome was detected by polymerase chain reaction in the throat swab and the infected cells after three passages, while C. pneumoniae was isolated from the throat swab after five passages by cell culture. PCR is considered to be a helpful method to isolate C. pneumoniae efficiently in routine cell-cultures.

To investigate the possibility of poliovirus persistence in patients with the postpolio syndrome, we examined skeletal muscle biopsy specimens, cerebrospinal fluid specimens, and sera for the presence of poliovirus RNA by the polymerase chain reaction, and for IgM antibodies by a poliovirus type-specific IgM antibody-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
