BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To evaluate long term results and to demonstrate safety and efficacy of non-surgical, exclusive strontium-/yttrium-90 beta irradiation of non-operated pterygia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between March 1977 and April 1999, 43 patients with 54 primary pterygia were treated with an exclusive strontium-/yttrium-90 beta-irradiation up to a total dose of 50 Gy divided in four fractions with one week apart. All patients were referred from the same ophthalmologist. The average follow-up were 112(+/-88 months (range, 12-321 months), median 96 months.

PURPOSE: To better define the efficacy and safety of argon plasma coagulation (APC), specifically for brachytherapy-related proctitis, we reviewed the clinical course of 7 patients treated for persistent rectal bleeding. Approximately 2-10% of prostate cancer patients treated with 125I or 103Pd brachytherapy will develop radiation proctitis. The optimum treatment for patients with persistent bleeding is unclear from the paucity of available data. Prior reports lack specific dosimetric information, and patients with widely divergent forms of radiation were grouped together in the analyses.

Severe gastrointestinal bleeding is a rare complication of radiation therapy that requires frequent transfusions. This case report describes a patient with severe bleeding from radiation colitis after treatment of bladder cancer. During 5 months of therapy with multiple drugs, the patient needed 26 units of packed red cells. A subsequent hormone therapy consisting of an estrogen-progesterone combination significantly reduced the need for blood transfusions and hospitalization.
