Bone images of the jaws and related dental structures were obtained in 25 patients undergoing skeletal surveys. The upper and lower jaws were divided into eight quadrants to facilitate comparisons between scintigraphic image findings and the results of dental examination. Fourteen of these 25 patients had at least one jaw quadrant with a positive image. During an episode of pneumonia and multiple pulmonary thromboembolic events, an adult male patient with sickle cell-C hemoglobinopathy developed a severe anemia associated with rapidly increasing splenic size and diminished splenic uptake of technetium Tc 99m sulfur colloid, indicating diminished splenic function due to hypersequestration, a rare and noteworthy phenomenon in adult patients with sickle cell-C disease.

Out of 450 patients referred for thyroid scintigraphy 83 consecutive patients with nodular goitre were selected for dual scintigraphy with 99mTc and 123I. Seventy-four patients had one or more palpable nodules and the other nine patients had palpably diffuse goitres with one or more nodules on the routine 99mTc scintigram. Sixty-five patients were studied with stress electrocardiography and thallium-20 1 relative myocardial perfusion scintigraphy. Results were correlated with selective coronary angiography. Ultrasonic study of testicular disease and paratesticular masses was carried out in 20 cases. In eight of these, comparison was made with pertechnetate perfusion studies performed concurrently. Radionuclide brain scans and cerebral blood flow studies have become highly sensitive but they remain quite nonspecific diagnostic modalities. Previous reports have discussed similarities between Paget's disease of bone and subdural hematoma on radionuclide studies. We encountered a case in which Paget's disease produced all the described manifestations of subdural hematoma. The differential features of the two conditions and their pathophysiological bases are discussed.

Twenty-four patients with multiple myeloma and 4 with solitary plasmacytoma had total-body scans after intravenous injection of 67Ga-citrate alone (17 patients) or combined with other agents (11 patients). A case of cholecystocolic fistula diagnosed by I131-Rose bengal scanning and later confirmed at the time of laparotomy is reported. The fistula was not seen by conventional contrast radiographic studies. It is suggested that I131-Rose bengal studies be considered in the study of patients suspected of having cholecystenteric fistulas.

Splenic uptake of 99mTc-diphosphonate was found on the bone scan of a patient with sickle cell disease. No splenic activity was demonstrated on 99mTc-sulfur colloid liver-spleen scans and no evidence of splenic calcification was seen on plain abdominal radiographs. A computerized transaxial tomographic scan, however, did demonstrate a small spleen denser than other abdominal organs. The splenic accumulation of 99mTc-diphosphonate and the increased density on computerized transaxial tomography could be attributed to microscopic splenic calcifications and/or iron deposits in the spleen.

Cyclotron-produced nitrogen-13 (half-life 10 min), as labeled ammonia (13NH4+), has been evaluated as a myocardial perfusion imaging agent. The regional myocardial uptake of 13NH4+ has been shown to be proportional to regional tissue perfusion in animal studies. Fifty-three patients with pulmonary neoplasm were studied by radioaerosol inhalation and perfusion lung scans, bronchoscopy and spirometry. The probability of lymph node metastases could be estimated by the amount of inhaled aerosol deposited at the carina. On thoracotomy, actual mediastinal lymphadenopathy was minimum, if any, in 4 patients without carinal aerosol deposition. Application of the aerosol inhalation lung scan to pulmonary neoplasm provides useful diagnostic and prognostic information regarding mediastinal lymph nodes metastases.

The lacrimal drainage systems of 78 eyes were studied by technetium scanning at the University of Iowa and, of these, 25 were also subjected to conventional contrast dacryocystography. Twenty-six eyes were asymptomatic for epiphora and normal scans were recorded on all of them. All of the remaining 52 symptomatic eyes had an abnormal lacrimal scan with either a presac or a postsac blockage. Gallium-67 citrate has been used to evaluate 19 patients with malignant tumors of the testes. Five patients with abnormal uptake of the radiotracer in the abdomen proved to have other evidence confirming metastatic spread to this site.
