Nerve conduction studies of the axillary, musculocutaneous and radial nerves in elite ice hockey players.

AIM: The peripheral nerves of the upper extremity are exposed to acute and chronic mechanical injuries in ice hockey players, because of the high repetition of motions, high muscular forces and extreme shoulder positions. This study was performed to evaluate the effect of ice hockey playing on the axillary, musculocutaneous and radial nerves crossing the upper arm region. METHODS: The ice hockey group consisted of 20 first-division male ice hockey players and the control group consisted of 20 non-active males. The neurophysiological study consisted of motor nerve conduction latency of the axi

[Direct treatment of nerve lesions in brachial plexus injuries in adults--a series of 100 operated cases].

The authors report a series of 100 brachial plexus injuries between April 1974 and January 1979. The frequency of these lesions, knowledge of the anatomy and pathology, and trends in prognosis are correlated to give the surgical indications for nerve graft repair. Correlation between preoperative myelography and the anatomy and type of pathology demonstrated at the time of operation, have been of special interest and have consolidated tha operative indications. Out of the 100 cases operated on between April 1974 and January 1979, neurolysis without plexus repair was performed in 25, nerve graf

The influence of medial reattachment of the torn cuff tendon for retracted rotator cuff tears.

We reattached the torn rotator cuff medial to the anatomic cuff insertion site if it was retracted. The purpose was to correlate the amount of medial reattachment of the cuff with shoulder function. We evaluated 63 shoulders in which repaired cuffs were followed with magnetic resonance imaging at a mean follow-up of 8 years. The amount of medial reattachment of the cuff tendon was determined by use of a T2-weighted oblique coronal view, which passed through the center of the humeral head, and was defined as the NCA angle (where N indicates the new cuff insertion point, C indicates the center o

A Novel Ultrasound-Guided Injection Strategy for Rapid Functional Recovery in Frozen Shoulder: A Multicenter Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Current frozen shoulder (FS) therapies present a clinical dilemma: although intra-articular corticosteroids with home exercise provide proven medium-term (3-month) benefits, they lack short-term (<4-week) efficacy for rapid recovery; conversely, manipulative treatments achieve faster outcomes but carry invasiveness risks. These limitations highlight the urgent need for developing and validating novel noninvasive approaches with prompt therapeutic effects. PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided tendon surface (UGTS) injection versus manipulation under loca

Arthroscopic lasso-loop technique for subscapularis repair with anterolateral viewing portal yields better clinical outcomes for Lafosse grade 3 and 4 tears: a prospective study with minimum 2 years of follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Contracted subscapularis tears, especially Lafosse grade 3 and 4, pose a significant challenge in surgical repair due to the need for extensive release of retracted tendon and the risk of cut-through due to poor tissue quality. The posterior viewing portal may hinder adequate visualization and extensive release of retracted tendons, particularly in addressing the bursal surface of the tears. Tension-free robust repair is critical to prevent retears and for achieving successful outcomes for these massive and complex retracted tears. This study investigates the clinical outcomes of t

The acute abdomen in spinal cord injury individuals.

A review of 1300 patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), over a period of 14 years, revealed 12 patients with an 'acute abdomen'. Seven events occurred during the initial admission, ranging from 10 days to 9 months from injury, and five during readmission of 'chronic' SCI patients. Four were in the acute stage 10-30 days from injury, all with peptic ulcer perforations. The remainder had either an intestinal obstruction, appendicitis or peritonitis. All of the neurological levels were above T6 except for one patient who had a low level paraplegia. The classical signs of an 'acute abdomen' may b

Quantification of dynamic posterior translation in modified bilateral Alexander views and correlation with clinical and radiological parameters in patients with acute acromioclavicular joint instability.

INTRODUCTION: Classification of AC-joint instability is based on radiologic evaluation of anteroposterior (a.p.) stress views of both shoulders, neglecting the horizontal component of instability. Recent studies have proposed an association of dynamic posterior translation (DPT) and inferior clinical results. The purpose of this study was to quantify DPT in modified Alexander views and correlate it with other radiological and clinical data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients (4 f, 28 m, mean age 34.1) with acute AC-joint dislocation (16 = RW III, 16 = RW V) underwent radiological exam

Minimal important change of the Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder (WOOS) index in patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis and rotator cuff tear arthropathy.

INTRODUCTION: The Minimal Important Change (MIC) for patient-reported outcome measures is the value that describes the smallest improvement considered worthwhile by patients. To the best of our knowledge, no MIC of the Western Ontario Osteoarthritis of the Shoulder Index (WOOS) score or the Disabilities of the Arm Shoulder and Hand (DASH) has been reported using the anchor-based predictive modeling approach based on patients with glenohumeral osteoarthritis or rotator cuff tear arthropathy. The aim of this study was to determine the MIC for WOOS and DASH in a cohort of patients with glenohumer

Reversed total shoulder arthroplasty for rotator cuff arthropathy is associated with increased scapulothoracic motion: A longitudinal two-year kinematic study.

BACKGROUND: Reversed total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) is a standard surgical procedure for the treatment of rotator cuff tear arthropathy (CTA), aimed at restoring active arm elevation. Shoulder elevation relies on both scapulothroacic (ST) and glenohumeral (GH) motion, but RTSA computer planning primarily focuses on the GH joint due to challenges in visualizing scapulothroacic (ST) motion. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does the scapulohumeral rhythm, by means of the relative contributions of ST rotation and GH elevation per degree of arm elevation, in a longitudinal setting for up to two years postop
