OBJECTIVE: To investigate the diagnostic value of AgNOR counts in cervical smears in the process of cervical carcinogenesis and in discriminating the different grades of squamous intraepithelial lesion (SIL).
STUDY DESIGN: Silver nitrate staining for AgNOR counts was performed in 50 cervical smears of cytologically diagnosed normal, inflammatory, low grade SIL (LSIL) (mild dysplasia), high grade SIL (HSIL) (moderate and severe dysplasia) and squamous cell carcinoma. The smears were derived from the ongoing routine outpatient cytology screening at Queen Mary's Hospital, Lucknow, India.

Coccidioides immitis is a dimorphic fungus capable of causing a diverse spectrum of disease in humans. Although the diagnostic pathologic finding in tissue is a mature endosporulating spherule, hyphal structures can also be found in over 50% of pathologic specimens. This report presents a case of coccidioidomycosis in which there were no intact spherules, but characteristic barrel shaped arthrospores present in tissue and cultures positively identified the organism as C. immitis. To clarify the clinicopathological significance of the suppurative lesions without an epithelioid granulomatous response (SLs without Ep) in … omas surrounded by palisaded epithelioid cells were in four of the 10 cases, and (4) Warthin-Starry silver stain-positive bacteria were detected in seven of the 10 cases. The results of our study suggest that SLs without Ep are an early stage of CSD.

'Nairobi Eye' is a condition caused by a blister beetle, Paederus eximius, found in Northern Kenya. It has not previously been described as a hazard for troops exercising in this area. Four cases are described. Recommended management is to wash the contact area initially with soap and water, and to treat subsequent lesions with flamazine.

P3HR-1 cell line derived from Burkitt's lymphoma was chosen as a model for studying the development of the cell population during long-term cultivation from the cytogenetic point of view. Fifty G-banded karyotypes at two different passage levels were analyzed, using also C-, Q- and Ag-staining. The modal chromosomal number at the 15th passage was 49, at the 75th passage 48. At the 15th passage considerable heterogeneity of karyotypes was found. The long-term effect on periapical healing (8-14 months) of CRCS and Sealapex was compared with that of AH 26. Vital pulpectomy and root canal filling by the hybrid thermomechanical method were performed in teeth of 3 young monkeys. The role of leukocytic infiltration in the initiation and maintenance of corneal neovascularization was studied in rats. Vascular ingrowth was induced by central cauterization of the cornea with silver nitrate and assessed after intraarterial perfusion of colloidal carbon. In normal rats, the mean vascular length was 0.33 mm. at 3 days and 0.63 mm. at 4 days. Whole-body x-irradiation with 800 rads depressed peripheral blood leukocyte counts to 1% of normal, prevented infiltration of monocytes, and reduced infiltration of neutrophils, but did not alter the neovascular response at 4 days.
