[Gastroesophageal reflux during++ sleep in obese patients].

Evidence of relationship between gastrooesophageal reflux (GER) and obstructive apneas in some near-miss children, led us to investigate its possibility in adults. Our purpose was to look for 1) sleep stages of GER occurrence, and 2) the possible chronological link between sleep apneas and GER. Eight obese patients were investigated. Esophageal pHmetry was carried out on two consecutive nights. On the second night, sleep polygraphy was performed including EEG, EOG, EMG, nasal and buccal flows, thoracic and abdominal motions. Esophageal pHmetry was analyzed between the onset of sleep and the de

From snoring to sleep apnea in a Singapore population.

We have no information on snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in our population, which is predominantly Chinese. Our perception is that sleep apnea syndrome is more common than the 2-4% prevalence (Young et al., 1993) often quoted, judging from the experience in our sleep disorder unit. We studied the snorers in an adult population in Singapore and then went on to see how many snorers suffer pathological apnea and sleep apnea syndrome. Room partners, 220 of them aged 30-60 years, were interviewed for their observation of snoring among each other. 106 consecutive habitual loud snorers of

Sleep disordered breathing in young boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

OBJECTIVES: To describe sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in young boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and its relationship with pulmonary function tests (PFTs). STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study examined diagnostic polysomnogram and PFT data of boys younger than 18 years with DMD and treated with steroids. Spirometry, respiratory muscle strength, body mass index (BMI), sleep architecture variables, and indices of SDB were analyzed. We examined the effect of PFT measures on the risk of each type of respiratory event using logistic regression and have reported results as OR (95% CI

Ondansetron and fluoxetine reduce sleep apnea in mice lacking monoamine oxidase A.

Prospective clinical trials addressing the role of serotonin (5-HT) in sleep apnea have indicated that the 5-HT uptake inhibitor fluoxetine is beneficial to some patients with obstructive apnea, whereas the 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist ondansetron seems of little value despite its efficacy in rat and dog models of sleep apnea (central and obstructive). Here, we examined the effect of these drugs in transgenic mice lacking monoamine oxidase A (Tg8), which exhibit approximately 3-fold higher rates of central sleep apnea than their wild-type counterparts (C3H), linked to their enhanced 5-HT levels

Overnight nasal CPAP improves hypersomnolence in sleep apnea.

Eleven adult men with sleep apnea underwent nocturnal polysomnography on two successive nights. The first study, done without NCPAP, served as the control. The second (treatment) was done with the application of 7.5 to 15 cm H2O nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP). A subjective sleepiness index (SSI) was noted upon awakening from each night of polygraphic recording. During the control night, the mean frequency of apnea episodes/sleep hr was 35.95 +/- 4.5 SE, and the mean duration was 28.68 +/- 2.7 sec. Mean frequency of disorder of breathing (DOB) episodes/sleep hr was 19.25 +/-

[Sleep-related respiratory disorders: from syndromes to risk factors].

In the past, sleep related breathing disorders (SRBD) have been described rather heterogeneously in terms of complex diseases, syndromes. During the past ten years, the relevant pathogenetic mechanisms of most of the SRBD could be defined, and data concerning their epidemiology were collected. Epidemiology and dangerousness being relevant criteria, the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome must be regarded as the most considerable SRBD. According to ICSD, the prevalence of a manifest obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is estimated at 1% of the entire population at least. Our measurings have shown tha

Multifactorial sleep disturbance in Klinefelter syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Klinefelter syndrome (KS), which is related to the presence of an additional X chromosome in a man, is associated with a broad variety of physical and psychosocial impairments. While the focus is usually placed on symptoms related to hypogonadism, such as infertility, recent studies have noted evidence of poor sleep in those patients. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report on the case of a 44-year-old man with KS who consulted in our Sleep medicine center for excessive daytime sleepiness and delayed sleep with irregular patterns. Polysomnography (PSG) revealed sleep apnea syndrome, with both

Sleep apnea in obese miniature pigs.

We postulated that three extremely obese Yucatan miniature pigs would have more sleep apnea than three nonobese Yucatan miniature pigs. Pigs were studied with the use of electroencephalograms, inductance plethysmography, oximetry, expired nasal CO2, or thermistors. All of the obese pigs, but none of the nonobese pigs, had both sleep apnea (8.5, 10.3, and 97.0 in obese pigs vs. O apnea + hypopnea/h in all nonobese pigs; P < 0.05) and oxyhemoglobin desaturation episodes during sleep [9.4 +/- 3.0 vs. 0 + 0.53 (SD) mean desaturation episodes/h in obese pigs vs. nonobese pigs, respectively; P < 0.0

Complex sleep apnea associated with use of nasal expiratory positive airway (nEPAP) device.

Complex sleep apnea syndrome (CompSAS) is characterized by predominant obstructive sleep disordered breathing with evolution of central disordered breathing following exposure to nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients. We report a case of CompSAS associated with use of a nasal expiratory positive airway (nEPAP, Provent) device. We therefore recommend obtaining objective sleep data to confirm treatment effectiveness of the nEPAP device for OSA prior to long-term prescription. Further research is warranted to understand the underlying p

Multimodal apnea detection: advancements through convolutional neural networks and STFT analysis of EEG, ECG, and nasal signals to tackle key challenges in innovation.

Sleep apnea is a prevalent chronic disorder posing significant health risks, requiring prompt diagnosis for effective treatment. This study introduces a reliable and efficient method using simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG), electrocardiography (ECG), and nasal airflow signals to distinguish apnea subtypes. The approach involves signal preprocessing with bandpass filtering and applying the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) to create spectrograms for 30-second segments. A convolutional neural network (CNN) classifies normal events, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CS
