Clinical and polysomnographic features of sleep-related eating disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related eating disorder is a recently described clinical syndrome that combines characteristics of both eating and sleep disorders. Nocturnal partial arousals are followed by rapid ingestion of food and subsequent poor memory for the episode. Only two case series examining this disorder have been published, and both are from the same sleep disorders center in a general hospital. METHOD: The author describes 23 consecutive cases of sleep-related eating disorder that presented to the Sleep Disorders Center at McLean Hospital. All patients were administered at a standardized cl

Association of procrastination on eveningness and sleep problems.

BACKGROUND: Procrastination has been associated with several adverse outcomes, including sleep disturbance. However, it remains unclear whether procrastination is independently associated with sleep disturbance after accounting for demographics, lifestyle factors, sleep hygiene, and ADHD traits. It is also uncertain whether this association is partly mediated by chronotype. METHODS: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted among 2971 adults aged 18-59 years. Participants completed validated self-report measures assessing procrastination, sleep disturbance using the Pittsburgh Sleep Qu

Examining oxidative stress as a mechanistic link between sleep irregularity and cardiovascular risk in young adults with chronic anxiety.

Chronic anxiety is a highly prevalent condition in young adults that is often associated with irregular sleep patterns, potentially augmenting cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Sleep irregularity is significantly associated with elevated oxidative stress and lower vascular function and blood pressure control in individuals with chronic anxiety. This study examined whether these impairments in vascular function and blood pressure control are driven by elevations in oxidative stress. Twenty-five young adults (24 ± 4 yr) with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or elevated GAD symptoms were asses

Maternal Perception of Infant Sleep and Bonding in Opioid Use Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Infant sleep problems are common in early infancy and can negatively influence maternal-infant bonding. As opioid-exposed neonates are at increased risk of sleep difficulties, we examined the association between maternal perception of infant sleep difficulties and maternal-infant bonding among dyads affected by maternal opioid use disorder (OUD), from birth through 6 months. METHODS: We enrolled 100 birthing people (participants) between 6 months and 2 years postpartum who had received medications for OUD during their pregnancy. Participants answered questions regarding maternal an

Association between Sleep and Language Development in Children with Congenital Zika Syndrome.

AIM: Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome (CZS) presents notable hurdles to neurodevelopment, with language development emerging as a crucial aspect. This study investigates sleep patterns and language skills in children with CZS, aiming to explore the potential synchronization of sleep development with their neurodevelopment. METHOD: We studied cross-sectionally 135 children with CZS aged 0 to 48 months, investigating sleep using the BISQ Questionnaire. Language development was assessed using the Early Language Milestone Scale, while motor development and cognitive and social ability were assessed

Sleep disturbance, associated symptoms, and quality of life in adults living with HIV in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Adverse symptom experiences, including sleep disturbances, are important negative predictors of quality of life (QoL), but few studies conducted in low-income countries have examined the impact of poor sleep and its associated symptoms on QoL among people living with HIV (PLWH). To this end, 200 PLWH who were receiving treatment with antiretroviral therapy (ART) were recruited through a community nongovernment organization in Jakarta, Indonesia. Validated instruments measured QoL, sleep disturbance, fatigue, pain, ART adherence, substance use, drug use severity, and methadone treatment. Descri

Sleep and hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis responses to metyrapone in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Disturbed sleep is a core feature of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), characterized in part by decreased delta power sleep that may result from stress-related alterations in corticotropin releasing factor (CRF), hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis (HPA) regulation and glucocorticoid signaling. Overnight HPA axis response mediating sleep disturbances in men and women with PTSD was examined using a metyrapone challenge. Metyrapone blocks cortisol synthesis, removing negative feedback, and increases the release of hypothalamic CRF and pituitary adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). Laboratory-

Rest-activity circadian rhythm and sleep quality in patients with binge eating disorder.

Recent findings suggest that altered rest-activity circadian rhythms (RARs) are associated with a compromised health status. RARs abnormalities have been observed also in several pathological conditions, such as cardiovascular, neurological, and cancer diseases. Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder, with a prevalence of 3.5% in women and 2% in men. BED and its associate obesity and motor inactivity could induce RARs disruption and have negative consequences on health-related quality of life. However, the circadian RARs and sleep behavior in patients with BED has been

Impaired sleep-related consolidation of declarative memories in idiopathic focal epilepsies of childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Declarative memory is consolidated during sleep in healthy children. We tested the hypothesis that consolidation processes are impaired in idiopathic focal epilepsies (IFE) of childhood in association with frequent interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) during sleep. METHODS: A verbal (word-pair association) and a nonverbal (2D object location) declarative memory task were administrated to 15 children with IFEs and 8 control children 6-12 years of age. Patients had either centrotemporal (11 patients) or occipital (4 patients) IEDs. All but 3 patients had a history of unprovoked

Pharmacotherapy in pediatric sleep disorders.

Sleep disorders are highly prevalent during childhood and adolescence. It is known that if left untreated, these problems can have significant impact on daytime function, including learning, memory, attention, and behavior. The approach to the treatment of these disorders (whether with or without pharmacotherapy) is dependent on a thorough evaluation of the sleep complaint and determination of an accurate diagnosis. Many pediatric sleep problems are due to insomnia. There is good evidence that young children with behaviorally based insomnia respond to appropriate behavioral interventions. Ther

Can chronic neuroleptic treatment promote sleep disturbances in elderly schizophrenic patients?

It has been proposed that sleep disturbances, especially reduced delta sleep, are related to a poor outcome in schizophrenia. To determine whether long-term treatment with neuroleptics can promote sleep disturbances by increasing the risk of a nocturnal myoclonus syndrome (NMS) (=periodic movements in sleep) related insomnia, we performed all-night polysomnography in 10 chronically ill schizophrenic patients who had been under neuroleptic therapy for a mean of 27 years. NMS-related insomnia was detected in all 10 patients. Potential pathophysiological relationships between long-term neurolepti

REM latency: a psychobiologic marker for primary depressive disease.

Previous investigations have indicated that one of the most consistent EEG sleep findings in depressive patients has been a shortened REM latency. On the basis of these studies, we have concluded that with the exception of drug withdrawal states (such as CNS depressant or amphetamine withdrawal and narcolepsy) shortened REM latency points to a strong affective component in the patient's illness. Short REM latency has also been observed in patients suffering from schizo-affective illness as well as in certain schizophrenic patients who require tricyclic antidepressants in their management. Sleep and long COVID: preexisting sleep issues and the risk of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection in a large general population using 3 different model definitions.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Insomnia, poor sleep quality, and extremes of sleep duration are associated with COVID-19 infection. This study assessed whether these factors are related to post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC). METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of a general population of 24,803 United States adults to determine the association of insomnia, poor sleep quality, and sleep duration with PASC. Three definitions of PASC were used based on post COVID-19 clinical features: COVID-19 Outbreak Public Evaluation Initiative (COPE) (≥ 3), National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NI
