Disability lived experience and expertise: recognising the expert contributions of people with disability.

While the inclusion of 'disability lived experience' is increasingly advocated for in research, policy and practice, its conceptualisation and application present significant challenges. This article, a collaborative effort by 16 individuals with diverse disabilities and expertise, critically examines the limitations inherent in the current usage. We argue that prevailing interpretations of 'lived experience' presume subjectivity and over-emphasise narratives of suffering, leading to tokenism and a false dichotomy between lived experience and professional or academic expertise. These issues ca

Mental health help-seeking among Korean men: the influence of stigma, masculine norms, and face.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that Asians and men are more susceptible to the stigma and stereotypes associated with mental illness. This social perception makes it difficult for Korean men to seek professional psychological help even when they desperately need it. The primary objectives of this study were to investigate barriers to mental health help-seeking among Korean men and to identify the role of sociocultural factors. METHODS: A total of 341 Korean men aged 19 to 59 years participated in an online survey, which included questionnaires on loss of face, self-stigma of seeking

Endless Scrolling: Predictors of Procrastinatory Short-Form Video Use and Its Effects on Stress and Sleep.

Unhealthy social media habits may foster procrastination, leading to negative psychological and behavioral outcomes. The rising prevalence of procrastinatory short-form video (SFV) use (e.g., on TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts) highlights the need to better understand how established predictors of problematic media use operate in this emerging media environment. To address this gap, this study investigated the motivational factors underlying procrastinatory SFV use and its relationship with user well-being. Using an online survey of college students (N = 549) from two U.S. universities

Disabilities and Handicaps of Patients with Laron Syndrome.

Background: Laron Syndrome (LS) is a rare hereditary form of dwarfism occurring, with few exceptions, in Jewish, Muslim, and Asian populations or their descendants spread over all continents. It is caused by deletions or mutations in the GH-Receptor gene, resulting in high serum levels of a structurally and biologically normal, but inactive GH and low-to-undetectable IGF-I. Aim: To summarize the disabilities and handicaps observed in patients with LS, from infancy through adult age. Results: Diagnosing, treating and following a cohort of 76 patients with LS (in many cases from infancy into adu

Between tradition and modernity: Evolving attitudes toward female smoking in Palestine.

Female smoking in many Arab countries has historically encountered strong cultural prohibitions, yet evidence suggests growing acceptance under conditions of urbanization and shifting gender norms. This study examines attitudes toward female smoking among individuals affiliated with Palestinian universities through semi-structured Zoom interviews with 50 participants (23 men, 27 women) from universities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Using qualitative thematic analysis, we identified six superordinate themes: cultural shifts, family relations, health and psychological factors, religious and

Peer-friendship Networks and Self-harm among Adolescents from Inner-city Schools: A Social Network Study.

Peer-relationships are critically important for adolescent behavior, but how peer-friendship network composition and structure influence adolescent self-harm is less clear. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the association between in-school peer-friendship networks, gender, and self-harm among inner-city adolescents. Participants were 2203 adolescents (mean age = 12.5 years, SD = 1.0; 53% girls) attending inner-city south London schools. Each adolescent nominated friends within their school year to construct sociometric peer-friendship networks and reported on lifetime self-

The Qualitative Experiences of Youth With Disorders of Visual Efficiency.

AIM: Disorders of visual efficiency present with symptoms that can impact a young person's occupational engagement. Often these disorders result from concussion, but may also present idiopathically. Literature is available on the ocular implications of concussion and the symptoms of visual efficiency disorders, regardless of cause. Lacking is an understanding of the lived experience of diagnosed youth. Patient-reported experiences on life with disorders of visual efficiency can inform client-centered evaluation and treatment. The aim of this study was to describe the lived experience of youth

"As time passes, her disability becomes severe." The struggles and challenges of caring for children living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus in Uganda: perspectives from caregivers.

PURPOSE: Spina bifida and hydrocephalus (SBH) are common neural tube defects that cause brain and spinal cord damage leading to loss of sensation, paralysis, deformities, and bladder/bowel dysfunction. Children with these conditions require substantial caregiving support. However, the specific challenges caregivers face remains poorly understood. This study explored the experiences of parents and siblings caring for a child or young adult with SBH. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 parents and 12 siblings in Central Uganda to understand their caregiving experiences. T

Managing collateral stigmatization while accessing biomedical HIV prevention for queer people in Dar es Salaam.

This paper introduces the concept of collateral stigma to analyze how queer people in Dar es Salaam navigate HIV prevention through Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). Drawing on 11 months of ethnographic fieldwork (2021-2022), we show how PrEP use exposes individuals to unintended and misattributed stigmatization: being perceived as HIV-positive, queer, or a sex worker despite efforts to conceal these identities. Through case studies, we illustrate how stigma materializes in pills, spaces, and institutional practices, shaping strategies of concealment and avoidance. While PrEP aims to reduce HIV

Treatment adherence and adverse event management in chronic lymphocytic leukemia: challenges and strategies for the future.

INTRODUCTION: There has been a paradigm shift in the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) over the past decade. With the advent of self-administered targeted oral anticancer agents (OAAs), the treatment of CLL has begun to shift from the infusion clinic to the patient's home. This introduced new challenges including patient non-adherence, class-specific adverse effects, and financial toxicity to treatment. In this paper, we discuss a structured approach to identifying and addressing barriers to optimal patient outcomes. AREAS COVERED: We will ground our discussion using the five di

"A young person in an old person's body": a reflexive thematic analysis of the experience of living with young onset Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: People with young-onset Parkinson's disease (YOPD), a term for those diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) under the age of 60, face unique challenges compared to those diagnosed with PD later in life. A better understanding of the lived experience of those with YOPD is essential to delivering bespoke rehabilitation and improving quality of life. PURPOSE: To provide insight into the emotional and social lived experience of individuals with YOPD. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were completed with twelve adults diagnosed with YOPD, aged between 30 and 59. Reflexive thematic a

'Becoming restrained': Conceptualising restrictive practices in the care of people living with dementia in acute hospital settings.

The use of restrictive practices within health and social care has attracted policy and practice attention, predominantly focusing on children and young people with mental health conditions, learning disabilities and autism. However, despite growing appreciation of the need to improve care quality for people living with dementia (PLWD), the potentially routine use of restrictive practices in their care has received little attention. PLWD are at significant risk of experiencing restrictive practices during unscheduled acute hospital admissions. In everyday routine hospital care of PLWD, concern

Online Communities for Child-Attracted Persons as Informal Mental Health Care: Exploring Self-Reported Wellbeing Outcomes.

Online support communities are gaining attention among child-attracted persons (CAPs). Though research has largely focused on the negative consequences these environments create for potential offending, they may also provide a beneficial alternative to more formal treatment settings. To assess the utility for clinical and therapeutic purposes, this analysis focused on subcultural dynamics to examine self-reported wellbeing outcomes of participation in a Dutch forum for CAPs. A total of 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with moderators, members and mental health professionals involve
