Nonmalignant ulcerous diseases of the mouth often require repeated histological and clinical observations for several weeks to establish a diagnosis. One patient with Wegener's disease, one with a necrotizing sialometaplasia, and a case of Sutton-type aphthosis outline these difficulties. In all three cases, only a synopsis of histology, laboratory findings, and clinical appearance led to the respective diagnosis.

The present study was undertaken in order to test the hypothesis that psychological stress is a provoking factor in attacks of recurrent aphthous ulceration (RAU). The population consisted of 22 patients (17 women, 5 men; mean age 39 yr, variation 17-69) with minor RAU. Psychologic stress was evaluated by means of the social readjustment rating scale (SRRS) and a visual analog scale (VAS). Oral health was studied in 49 children below 12 years of age treated with bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Dental treatment prior to BMT was required in 41% of the children. Ulceration of the mucous membranes in the mouth was observed in 37% of the patients during treatment. Those given methotrexate as prophylaxis against graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) exhibited oral ulcerations more frequently (p less than 0.05) than those given cyclosporin. The extra intestinal manifestations of Crohn's disease (CD) are not devoid of interest. They can, by themselves, aggravate the CD.
