Disturbed dreaming, posttraumatic stress disorder, and affect distress: a review and neurocognitive model.

Nightmares are common, occurring weekly in 4%-10% of the population, and are associated with female gender, younger age, increased stress, psychopathology, and dispositional traits. Nightmare pathogenesis remains unexplained, as do differences between nontraumatic and posttraumatic nightmares (for those with or without posttraumatic stress disorder) and relations with waking functioning. No models adequately explain nightmares nor have they been reconciled with recent developments in cognitive neuroscience, fear acquisition, and emotional memory. The authors review the recent literature and pr

Maltreated children's memory: accuracy, suggestibility, and psychopathology.

Memory, suggestibility, stress arousal, and trauma-related psychopathology were examined in 328 3- to 16-year-olds involved in forensic investigations of abuse and neglect. Children's memory and suggestibility were assessed for a medical examination and venipuncture. Being older and scoring higher in cognitive functioning were related to fewer inaccuracies. In addition, cortisol level and trauma symptoms in children who reported more dissociative tendencies were associated with increased memory error, whereas cortisol level and trauma symptoms were not associated with increased error for child

Altered intrinsic activity and functional connectivity in two animal models with opposing fear memories.

Post-traumatic stress disorder and sepsis-associated encephalopathy are two common neuropsychiatric disorders, but to some extent with opposing cognitive performance. However, the neural mechanisms underlying these two different phenomena remain poorly understood. In our study, the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) of spontaneous blood oxygen level-dependent signals was used to assess regional disturbances in two animal models with opposing cognitive performance, namely post-traumatic stress disorder and sepsis-associated encephalopathy. Then, we examined whether the memory-releva

Ketamine ameliorates post-traumatic social avoidance by erasing the traumatic memory encoded in VTA-innervated BLA engram cells.

Erasing traumatic memory during memory reconsolidation is a promising retrieval-extinction strategy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Here, we developed an acute social defeat stress (SDS) mouse model with short-term and re-exposure-evoked long-term social avoidance. SDS-associated traumatic memories were identified to be stored in basolateral amygdala (BLA) engram cells. A single intraperitoneal administration of subanesthetic-dose ketamine within, but not beyond, the re-exposure time window significantly alleviates SDS-induced social avoidance, which reduces the activity and quantit

Pregnant women's depression and posttraumatic stress levels after the large-scale Turkey earthquakes: a cross-sectional study.

Depression and posttraumatic stress disorder are two common mental disorders after negative life events. This study was conducted to evaluate the depression and posttraumatic stress levels of pregnant women after the large-scale earthquakes that occurred in Turkey in 2023. The study was carried out with 395 pregnant women who visited maternity outpatient clinics of a public hospital in a province in southern Turkey. The data were collected with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist - Civilian Version (PCL-C). Descriptive statistics, the independen

Evidence-based medicine evaluation of electrophysiological studies of the anxiety disorders.

We provide a systematic, evidence-based medicine (EBM) review of the field of electrophysiology in the anxiety disorders. Presently, electrophysiological studies of anxiety focus primarily on etiological aspects of brain dysfunction. The review highlights many functional similarities across studies, but also identifies patterns that clearly differentiate disorder classifications. Such measures offer clinical utility as reliable and objective indicators of brain dysfunction in individuals and indicate potential as biomarkers for the improvement of diagnostic specificity and for informing treatm

"If I feel anxious, there must be danger": ex-consequentia reasoning in inferring danger in anxiety disorders.

It has been suggested that neurotic patients engage in 'emotional reasoning', i.e. draw invalid conclusions about a situation on the basis of their subjective emotional response. The present experiment investigated whether anxiety patients infer danger on the basis of their anxious response, whereas normals infer danger only on the basis of objective information. Four groups of anxiety patients (52 spider phobics, 41 panic patients, 38 social phobics, and 31 other anxiety patients) and 24 normal controls made ratings of the danger they perceived in scripts in which information about objective

Management of specific anxiety disorders in the elderly.

Advanced age is not, per se, an indication for a different treatment approach, although certain modifications in the treatment plan are required. Recognition and management of anxiety disorders in the elderly must be prompt to interrupt the vicious cycle of anxiety-depression, physical illness, and other stresses.

Taxonomy of the psychosocial consequences caused by the violence of persecution of ETA's network.

This paper delimits and analyzes the effects of the harassment perpetrated by ETA's terrorist network in the Basque Country. The aim was to provide a taxonomy of the consequences of psychological violence and to validate this taxonomy, by means of a content analysis of 37 testimonies of victims of terrorist violence. The taxonomy of consequences of psychological violence is made up by four components: 1. the effects on the context of the persons affected, 2. on their emotional state, 3. on cognition and 4. on behavior. Results show a predominance of contextual consequences and negative cogniti

The impact of unintentional pediatric trauma: a review of pain, acute stress, and posttraumatic stress.

This article reviews current research on acute stress disorder (ASD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) resulting from pediatric simple (i.e., single, unpredictable, and unintentional) physical injury and how pain may act as both a trigger and a coexisting symptom. Although several studies have explored predictors of ASD and PTSD, as well as the relationship between these conditions in adults, there is less research on ASD and PTSD in children and adolescents. This review highlights the importance of early detection of pain and acute stress symptoms resulting from pediatric unintentional

[Stress disorder in parents of premature neonates--secondary publication].

The current study evaluated the psychological sequelae in 66 parents of premature neonates (mean weight 842 grams). A total of 35% of the parents reported that their child had a handicap, while 20% of the women met the criteria of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) at the time of the study, and an additional 10% met the criteria for subclinical PTSD. Female gender, the child's handicap, general distress during hospitalization, distressing contact with hospital staff, experienced distress at homecoming, and emotional coping explained 72% of the degree of traumatization.

The comorbidity of Axis I disorders in depressed pregnant women.

Depression during pregnancy is highly prevalent and is associated with increased risk of a variety of negative psychological and medical outcomes in both mothers and offspring. Antenatal depression often co-occurs with significant anxiety, potentially exacerbating morbidities for women and their children. However, screening during the antenatal period is frequently limited to assessment of depression so that other significant comorbid disorders may be missed. Follow-up assessment by clinicians has similarly focused primarily on detection of depressive symptoms. Anxiety, obsessive compulsive di

Prediction of occupational disability from psychological and neuropsychological evidence in forensic context.

Within the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and neuropsychology, medical examiners are often tasked with providing an opinion about an injured individual's health prognosis and likelihood of returning to work. Traditionally, examiners have conducted such assessments by employing clinical intuition, expert knowledge, and judgment. More recently, however, an accumulation of research on factors predictive of disability has allowed examiners to provide prognostications using specific empirically supported evidence. This paper integrates current evidence for four common clinical issues encountered

Mental health of Asian American and Pacific Islander military veterans: brief review of an understudied group.

The mental health of American military soldiers and veterans is of widespread concern; yet, there has been no prior review of studies on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) veterans. This article provides a brief, but comprehensive review of the mental health of AAPI veterans. An exhaustive literature search was conducted using the major medical and mental health literature databases. Of 13 identified articles, nine were empirical studies on either post-traumatic stress disorder among AAPI Vietnam veterans or health functioning of AAPI veterans based on national veteran surveys. Investigating the neuroanatomical underpinnings of complex PTSD in people with psychosis.

Childhood maltreatment and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (cPTSD) are common among people with psychosis. Traumatic life experiences may contribute to the neural substrates of psychosis. Affective pathways to psychosis outline the role of post-traumatic sequelae, but no studies have explored the neurobiological underpinnings of cPTSD in this population. We compared two groups meeting criteria for schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, with (n = 58) and without (n = 50) comorbid cPTSD. Region of interest (ROI) analysis was used to assess structural differences in ROIs identified by meta-anal
