The gastrointestinal invasive stages of two parasitic nematodes, Ancylostoma caninum and Anisakis simplex, were each found to release in vitro a hydrolytic enzyme that degrades the glycosaminoglycan hyaluronic acid. The parasite hyaluronidases were partially purified by ion-exchange chromatography and biochemically characterized. The hyaluronidase from A. caninum adult worms had a molecular weight of 65,000 and a pH optimum of 6 with activity at neutral pH, while the hyaluronidase from A. simplex larvae had a molecular weight of 40,000 and a pH optimum of 4 with no activity at neutral pH. This is a report about five patients who suffered a perforation of the colon during a barium-sulfate enema. In one case, barium leaked into the intraperitoneal cavity causing a barium peritonitis. In the other four cases, leakage into the retroperitoneal cavity occurred. All patients underwent surgical removal and drainage of the barium-sulfate and subsequently required a colostomy. Large doses of morphine sulfate have been reported to cause myocardial lactate production and reduction in coronary blood flow in animals. Bovine adrenal cortical tissue contains a lipoidal derivative of pregnenolone (3beta-hydroxy-pregn-5-en-20-one) from which the free steroid can be liberated by treatment with alkali.
