Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury leads to intensive sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation and inflammatory reactions. Whether renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) could be a new therapeutic strategy to modulate I/R inflammation and reduce infarct size after myocardial I/R injury needs to be explored. First, we investigated the correlation between plasma norepinephrine concentrations and circulating myeloid cell numbers in patients with acute myocardial infarction. And then, C57BL/6 mice underwent a "two-hit" operation, with 10% phenol applied to bilateral renal nerves to abrog…

BACKGROUND: Rett Syndrome (RTT), caused by a loss-of-function in the epigenetic modulator: X-linked methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2), is a pervasive neurological disorder characterized by compromised brain functions, anxiety, severe mental retardation, language and learning disabilities, repetitive stereotyped hand movements and developmental regression. An imbalance in the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous system (dysautonomia) and the resulting autonomic storms is a frequent occurrence in patients with RTT. The prototypical beta blocker propranolol has been used to manage sympa…

OBJECTIVES: Motion sickness (MS) is evoked by the conflict among somatosensory, visual, and vestibular input. Some of the MS symptoms and signs are mediated by activation of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), a maneuver used for pain control, was found to influence cardiovascular responses through ANS reflex, and to enhance motor function, visuospatial abilities, postural control, and cognitive function. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of TENS on MS.
SUBJECTS AND DESIGN: Fifteen (15) healthy young men particip

BACKGROUND: A thyroid storm--a sudden, life-threatening exacerbation of thyrotoxicosis--can lead to multiple organ failure due to hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Symptoms may include fever, tachycardia, cardiovascular collapse, myocardial infarction, hepatic failure, cerebral infarction, delirium, coma, and rhabdomyolysis. Various therapies have been proposed for the management of thyrotoxicosis. They include: reduction of sympathetic outflow (beta-blockers); decreased production and release of thyroid hormone (thiamazole, propylthiouracyl, or iodine solution); and peripheral …

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome have characteristic variants in the PHOX2B gene (primarily polyalanine expansion mutations). The PHOX2B gene acts as a transcriptional activator in the promotion of pan-neuronal differentiation in the autonomic nervous system during early embryologic development, with a primary role in the sympathetic noradrenergic phenotype in vertebrates. Because sympathetic innervation has been hypothesized to affect the development of dermatoglyphic pattern types, we hypothesized that individuals with PHOX2B-confirmed congenital centra

OBJECTIVES: Patients with chronic heart failure frequently show blunted circadian blood pressure profiles. The mechanisms involved in the loss of physiological day-night variation are still unclear, but a continuously active sympathetic nervous system could play a role. The present study evaluated long-term consequences of rat heart failure on cardiovascular circadian patterns in vivo, and on density and function of cardiac beta-adrenoceptor subtypes in vitro, as a marker of cardiac adrenergic drive.
METHODS: Heart failure in rats was induced by coronary artery ligation leading to infarct siz…

Diurnal variations in lymph node ornithine decarboxylase activity were examined in submaxillary lymph nodes of rats injected with Freund's complete adjuvant or its vehicle. After immunization, lymph node ornithine decarboxylase activity increased by about 10-fold. Both in immunized and non-immunized rats, a significant diurnal variation in ornithine decarboxylase activity was found, with a maximal activity at early (i.e. 13.00 h, vehicle) or late afternoon (i.e. 17.00 h, Freund's adjuvant). Injection of Freund's adjuvant during daylight or at night resulted in similar day-night differences in

The role of the sympathetic nervous system as it relates to adrenoreceptor-mediated hemodynamic responses was investigated in patients with essential hypertension and in normal subjects of similar age. An age-related increase in plasma norepinephrine (PNE) concentrations observed in 36 recumbent normal subjects (r = 0.623, p less than 0.001) was not found in 56 patients; the latter included some young patients with high values. Sympathetic overactivity in patients (n = 24) as compared with normotensive subjects (n = 20) was suggested by a greater increase in PNE upon standing (242 +/- 34 vs 15…

Pranayama, yogic breathing techniques, are considered a form of meditation. In classical yoga, the breath is associated with prana; thus, pranayama is a means to control the inner force, the prana shakti or life energy. Pranayama is more than regular breathing and if practiced in structured and methodical manner can reduce the body's physical symptoms of stress and anxiety. It has more recently gained popularity in the western world because of the many health benefits that come from a pranayama practice. Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, affecting millions w

INTRODUCTION: Disturbance of sympathetic and vagal nervous system participates in the pathogenesis of hypertension and atrial fibrillation (AF). Renal denervation (RDN) can modulate autonomic nervous activity and reduce blood pressure (BP) in hypertensive patients. We aimed to evaluate the effect of RDN combined with pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) in patients with AF and hypertension.
METHODS: Clinical trials including randomized data comparing PVI plus RDN vs PVI alone were enrolled. Primary outcome was incidence of AF recurrence after procedure.
RESULTS: A total of 387 patients, of them 25

Ghrelin as a human natural hormone is involved in fundamental regulatory processes of eating and energy balance. Ghrelin signals the nutrient availability from the gastrointestinal tract to the central nervous system, up-regulates food intake and lowers energy expenditure mainly through hypothalamic mediators acting both centrally and peripherally including the gastrointestinal tract (motility, epithelium), promotes both neuro-endocrine and inflammatory signals to increase skeletal muscle growth and decrease protein breakdown, and increases lipolysis while body fat utilization is reduced. Ghre

Physiological studies have found that the autonomic nervous system plays an important role in controlling blood pressure values. This paper, based on machine learning approaches, analysed short-term heart rate variability to determine differences in autonomic nervous function between hypertensive patients and normal population. The electrocardiogram (ECG) of hypertensive patients are 137 ECG recordings provided by Smart Health for Assessing the Risk of Events via ECG (SHAREE database). The RR intervals of healthy subjects include the data of 18 subjects from the MIT-BIH Normal Sinus Rhythm Dat

OBJECTIVE: The body's adaptation to physical exercise is modulated by sympathetic and parasympathetic (vagal) branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Heart rate variability (HRV), the beat-to-beat variation of the heart, is a proxy measure for ANS activity, whereas blood pressure (BP) is an indicator for cardiovascular function. Impaired vagal activity and lower BP is already described after exercise. However, inconsistent results exist about how long vagal recovery takes and how long post-exercise hypotension persists. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess HRV and BP 1 h afte

Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in neuronal development, particularly in myelinogenesis. Demyelination of the autonomic nervous system occurs early in vitamin B12 deficiency. However, the impact of maternal vitamin B12 deficiency during pregnancy on neuronal function in the offspring is poorly documented. The objective of this study was to assess cardiac autonomic nervous activity in children born to mothers with low vitamin B12 status during pregnancy using heart rate variability (HRV) indices in the frequency domain. Seventy-nine healthy children between 3 and 8 years of age were evaluated fr

Neuropathic pain is caused by functional abnormalities of structural lesions in the peripheral or central nervous system, and occurs without peripheral nociceptor stimulation. Many common diseases, such as postherpetic neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia, diabetic neuropathy, spinal cord injury, cancer, stroke, and degenerative neurological diseases may produce neuropathic pain. Recently, theories have been proposed that state there are specific cellular and molecular changes that affect membrane excitability and induce new gene expression after nerve injury, thereby allowing for enhanced response
