Appropriate timing for the removal of urinary catheters in gastrointestinal surgery with epidural anesthesia: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate whether early urinary catheter removal is feasible during epidural anesthesia during gastrointestinal surgery in male patients at high risk for urinary retention. METHODS: Male patients who underwent radical surgery for gastric or colon cancer were enrolled in this randomized controlled trial. Patients were randomized 1:1 into 2 groups: the early group, in which the urinary catheter was removed before removal of the epidural catheter on the second or third postoperative day, and the late group, in which the urinary cathe

Quality of life: urinary bladder augmentation or substitution in children.

PURPOSE: Bladder augmentation and substitution has been assumed to improve health-related quality of life in patients with urinary incontinence. This study was performed to elicit an evidence base for or against the above hypothesis. METHODS: Between 1988 and 2006, 67 bladder augmentations and 7 bladder substitutions were performed at our institute. Inclusion criteria for the cross-sectional study were a postoperative period of more than 1 year and an age of at least 10 years at the time of operation. A multimodality treatment-specific questionnaire (comprising 38 questions) was designed and

Efficacy of suprapubic hot compress in preventing emergence agitation in patients with indwelling urinary catheters under general anesthesia: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Catheter-related bladder discomfort (CRBD), a major trigger of emergence agitation (EA), is common in patients with indwelling urinary catheters under general anesthesia, with limited effective non-pharmacological options. This study evaluated whether suprapubic hot compress reduces CRBD and EA in this population. METHODS: In this prospective single-center randomized controlled trial, elective surgery patients with intraoperative urinary catheterization were randomly assigned to the hot compress group or control group. The intervention group received 20 min of continuous suprapubic h…

The Macedo ileum-based reservoir for the management of bladder involvement in epidermolysis bullosa.

INTRODUCTION: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) can severely affect the urinary tract, leading to strictures and urine outflow obstruction, which pose significant risks to kidney function. Procedures involving the urinary mucosa often exacerbate these issues, making safe bladder emptying a major challenge. This study reviews surgical methods for managing urological complications in EB patients, with a focus on the Macedo procedure, which offers a promising alternative that avoids further bladder mucosa irritation and prevents disease exacerbation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic revi

Impact on urinary incontinence after management of complications related to a retropubic midurethral sling.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The most common complications to midurethral sling (MUS) operations for stress urinary incontinence are postoperative urinary retention (POUR), vaginal MUS exposure, and urgency. They are well described but consensus regarding their management is missing. An evaluation of the treatment of POUR, exposure and urgency after the MUS procedure in our department was implemented. Incontinence status after treatment of complications was evaluated. METHODS: A review of the medical records of women undergoing MUS procedures from 1 January 2017 to 31 December 2021 (n = 329).

Lower urinary tract function in patients with fracture in thoracolumbal junction: an observational study.

A fracture in the thoracolumbal junction may cause complete or incomplete damage to the spinal cord, conus medullaris or cauda equina and result in an isolated or mixed lesion of the upper and lower motor neurons causing leg weakness and urinary/bowel/sexual dysfunction. In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we aimed to describe electrodiagnostic and urodynamic findings after thoracolumbal fractures and determine potential discriminating factors. We identified 74 cases (mean age 42 years, range 16-79 years, 55 men) admitted to our institution between 2008 and 2018 for Th12, L1 or L2 ver

Postnatal Management in Congenital Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction With and Without Prenatal Vesicoamniotic Shunt.

Purpose: Congenital lower urinary tract obstruction (cLUTO) includes a heterogeneous group of conditions caused by a functional or mechanical outlet obstruction. Early vesicoamniotic shunting (VAS) possibly reduces the burden of renal impairment. Postpartum, pediatric urologists are confronted with neonates who have a shunt in place and a potentially impassable urethra with a narrow caliber. Early management of these patients can be challenging. Here, we would like to share the approach we have developed over time. Materials and Methods: We conducted a single-center retrospective analysis from
