Towards the goal of developing broad-spectrum, self-disinfecting, and cost-effective renewable antimicrobial materials for the prevention of pathogen transmission relevant to healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), a facile cyanuric chloride coupling strategy was employed to covalently attach a commercially available phenothiazine-based photosensitizer, thionine (Th), onto lignin nanoparticles (LNPs). The resultant photodynamic Th-LNPs conjugate was characterized by a variety of techniques, including elemental analysis, diffuse reflectance UV-visible and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopies

With antimicrobial resistance (AMR) posing a major global threat, largely driven by antibiotic overuse, the search for alternative antimicrobial strategies has become increasingly urgent. Bacteriocins, due to their specificity and limited impact on host microbiota, are gaining attention as viable substitutes. Here, we report the identification and characterization of a novel bacteriocin produced by Staphylococcus saprophyticus P1CEA4, a strain isolated from meat-producing pigs. This strain exhibited potent direct and extracellular antimicrobial activity. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) enabled t

The rapid increase in bacterial resistance to existing treatments underscores the critical need for novel therapeutic strategies. Here, an innovative approach using targeted nanocarrier systems that mimic phage-bacteria interactions through phage receptor binding protein (Gp45 from the ϕ11 lysogenic phage) or derived peptides (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5), are introduced. These nanodrugs, exhibited receptor-ligand specificity and strong binding affinity, for the first time, were employed for the precise delivery and targeting of antibiotics within living organisms. The actively targeted micelles via tw

BACKGROUND: Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria. Bacteriophages are widely distributed in various environments. The prevalence of bacteriophages in water sources, especially wastewaters, is naturally high. These viruses affect evolution of most bacterial species. Bacteriophages are able to integrate their genomes into the chromosomes of their hosts as prophages and hence transfer resistance genes to the bacterial genomes. Enterococci are commensal bacteria that show high resistance to common antibiotics. For example, prevalence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci has increased with

Marine fungi-derived secondary metabolites are still an important source for the discovery of potential antimicrobial agents. Here, five new polyketides (1, 2, and 6-8) and seven known compounds (3-5 and 9-12) were obtained from the culture of the marine-derived fungus Trichoderma sp. JWM29-10-1. Their structures were identified by extensive spectrographic data analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR, UV, IR, and HR-ESI-MS. Further, the absolute configurations of new compounds were determined by circular dichroism (CD) spectrum and alkali-hydrolysis in combination with the in situ dimolybdenum CD me

Staphylococcus aureus is a nosocomial bacterium causing different infectious diseases, ranging from skin and soft-tissue infections to more serious and life-threatening infections such as sepsis, meningitis and endocarditis, which may be exacerbated by antibiotic resistance. Plant products may be seen as an alternative as antibacterial agents, namely, against S. aureus. Thus, the aim of this work was to characterize the chemical composition and evaluate the bioactive properties of the T. zygis essential oil (EO), with a focus on antimicrobial activity against S. aureus. For some time, glycopeptide antibiotics have been considered the last line of defense against Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). However, vancomycin resistance of Gram-positive bacteria is an increasingly emerging worldwide health problem. The mode of action of glycopeptide antibiotics is essentially the binding of peptidoglycan cell-wall fragments terminating in the d-Ala-d-Ala sequence to the carboxylate anion binding pocket of the antibiotic. Dimerization of these antibiotics in aqueous solution was shown to persist and even to enhance the antibacterial effect in a co-opera…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article summarizes the available evidence enabling a stratification of risk for multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) in patients with skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI).
RECENT FINDINGS: MDRB are increasingly reported in both healthcare-associated (HCA) and community-acquired (CA)-SSTI, including in patients with life-threatening presentations for whom early initiation of adequate antimicrobial therapy is pivotal to improve outcomes. Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is now endemic in several geographical areas and may cause outb

Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for numerous instances of superficial, toxin-mediated, and invasive infections. The emergence of methicillin-resistant (MRSA), as well as vancomycin-resistant (VRSA) strains of S. aureus, poses a massive threat to human health. The tenacity of S. aureus to acquire resistance against numerous antibiotics in a very short duration makes the effort towards developing new antibiotics almost futile. S. aureus owes its destructive pathogenicity to the plethora of virulent factors it produces among which a majority of them are moonlighting proteins. Moonlighting pr
