BACKGROUND: Routine direct antiglobulin test (DAT) screening in newborns at risk of isoimmune hemolytic disease is a long-standing practice. Advancements in prophylactic care and noninvasive hyperbilirubinemia monitoring warrant reevaluating the value of DAT. We investigated the clinical utility of routine DAT screening for mature newborns with ABO incompatibility and ABO-compatible newborns with RhD incompatibility born to mothers without active alloimmunization.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of infants born after 35 weeks or more of gestation undergoing DAT screening. I

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the phenotypic distribution of ABO and Rh blood groups in a geographically diverse cohort of Mexican outpatients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A clinic-based, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted using anonymized electronic health records (EHRs) from 1,820,793 individuals aged 1 to 100 years who underwent clinically or administratively indicated ABO and Rh blood typing at Salud Digna clinics across all 32 Mexican states between January 2023 and July 2025. All ABO and Rh determinations were performed by forward typing using either the fully automat

BACKGROUND: The role of the ABO blood group goes beyond immunohematology as there is accumulating evidence on its association with type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, findings regarding the relation have been contradictory and there is a need to determine the validity of claims.
OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the susceptibility of the ABO blood groups to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
METHOD: The research design is a meta-analysis. An extensive search was done in PubMed, ScienceDirect, ResearchGate, and Google Scholar. Heterogeneity was determined through Cochran's Q test and I2 index. Random-effects model w

BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease with multifactorial etiology. Studies on the pathogenesis of acne are still important. Recently, various studies have been conducted on the significance of genetics in the pathogenesis of acne. Blood group is transferred genetically and could affect the development, progress, and severity of certain diseases.
AIM: In the current study, the correlation between the severity of acne vulgaris and ABO blood groups was investigated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 380 patients (263 mild and 117 severe acne vulgaris patients) and 1000 he

The last few decades have seen a pandemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which continues to cause substantial morbidity and mortality. ABO blood groups are anthropological and genetic characteristics of a population whose associations with HIV infection are still controversial. This systematic review with meta-analysis was undertaken to investigate whether certain blood groups may have associations with HIV infection. PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases were systematically searched as of 6 September 2021. Grey literature was identified

BACKGROUND: Bombay phenotype (Oh ) is a rare blood group and poses unique challenges during pregnancy, including an adequate supply of blood products in case of postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) and the risk of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). Case reports of antenatal care in this cohort are scarce. Herein, we present a case of twin pregnancy in an Oh woman and outline her multidisciplinary management. We summarize the literature to better inform decision-making and patient blood management in the antenatal care of Oh women.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 22-year-old G1P0 presented at 15 we

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Liver allograft antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) studies have lagged behind parallel efforts in kidney and heart because of a comparative inherent hepatic resistance to AMR. Three developments, however, have increased interest: first, solid phase antibody testing enabled more precise antibody characterization; second, increased expectations for long-term, morbidity-free survival; and third, immunosuppression minimization trials.
RECENT FINDINGS: Two overlapping liver allograft AMR phenotypic expressions are beginning to emerge: acute and chronic AMR. Acute AMR usually occu

Recent epidemiological evidences revealed the higher prevalence of 'O' blood group in the residents of malaria-endemic areas. Also some data indicated preference of mosquitoes to 'O' group. The aim of this study was to determine ABO group ratio in the residents as well as ABO group preference of Anopheles in two malaria endemic areas in south of Iran. Agglutination method was used for ABO typing of residents. Field blood fed Anopheles specimens were tested against vertebrate DNA using mtDNA-cytB PCR-RFLP and then the human fed specimens were tested for ABO groups using multiplex allele-specifi

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the distribution of ABO blood groups in women with ovarian cancer differs from that in the general population in a large, defined English region.
DESIGN: Analysis of record abstracts of hospital care held in the Oxford record linkage study supplemented with data from the Oxford cancer registry.
SETTING: Oxford Regional Health Authority area.
SUBJECTS: A total of 1261 women who had ovarian cancer between 1968 and 1986 with ABO blood groups recorded on the Oxford Record Linkage Study and cross checked against the cancer registry comprised the study group.

The HLA and ABO systems were studied in patients with complete hydatidiform mole (CHM). The study confirmed that CHM can immunize the patient against paternally derived HLA-ABC antigens. In patients who required subsequent treatment for trophoblastic tumours the frequency of antibody detection was much higher (10/14) at the time of treatment than it had been at the time of evacuation (2/14). The source of immunogen was considered to be the stroma of the placental villi. It was demonstrated that in a series of 82 CHMs none of the 25 patients mated to a husband of the same ABO group as her own r

Adenocarcinomas of the sigmoid colon and rectum were studied for the presence of blood group substances of the A, B, H system using the method of specific erythrocytic adherence. Of 17 adenocarcinomas studied, eight were found to have reactivity for blood group substances. All eight tumours showing reactivity for blood group substances were from patients of the blood group type A, whereas no blood group substances reactivity could be found in any of the adenocarcinomas from patients of the B blood group type. The epithelial cells of the entire colon contain blood group substances in the fetal
