Acoustic thoracic images for transmitted glottal sounds.

Sound transmission has been of interest for many years in an attempt to study the structure of the lung and different researches have shown that artificial sounds produce a lateralization of sound information at the thoracic surface. Most of these studies have use non-simultaneous recording and input sounds introduced at the mouth or other thoracic points. In this paper, we present acoustic thoracic images, for transmitted glottal sounds, formed by a multichannel system with an array of 5x5 microphones. The study was done using 4 healthy subjects and 4 subjects having diffuse interstitial pneu

[Radiosurgery treatment of acoustic neuromas. Our experience].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results and side effects obtained using radiosurgery to treat acoustic neuromas. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Between 1999 and 2004 we treated 30 patients with unilateral acoustic neuromas with a mean age of 54 years old (31-76), a mean follow-up of 34 months (12-54), and tumour size between 4 and 38 millimetres (mean, 16.5). All of them were treated with radiosurgery (24 Gamma Knife and 6 LINAC) with doses of 1200-1300 cGy. RESULTS: Tumour growth control rate (smaller or same size) was 93 % (28/30). In 11 patients there was a post-treatment hearing loss (36.6 %). Trigemin

Stereotactic radiation techniques in the treatment of acoustic schwannomas.

Medical decision-making is based on benefit-to-cost analysis. Optimally, treatment obtains a high degree of benefit while minimizing the physical, social, and financial costs. The goals of the treatment of acoustic schwannomas are prohibiting tumor growth and alleviation of symptoms caused by damage to local structures. These symptoms-tinnitus, ataxia, and hearing loss--secondary to eighth nerve dysfunction, as well as symptoms arising from damage to adjacent structures such as the facial nerve, trigeminal nerve, or pons, can be caused by tumor growth or treatment. Determination of optimal the

Study of cellular adhesion with scanning acoustic microscopy.

A mechanical scanning acoustic reflection microscope was applied to living cells (e.g., osteoblasts) to observe their undisguised shapes and to evaluate their adhesive conditions at a substrate interface. A conditioned medium was collected from a bone-metastatic breast cancer cell line, MDA-MB-231, and cultured with an immature osteoblast cell line, MC3T3-E1. To characterize the cellular adhesion, MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts were cultured with or without MDA-MB-231 conditioned medium for 2 days, then assayed with the scanning acoustic reflection microscope. At 600 MHz the scanning acoustic reflection

[Size and proliferative index correlation in acoustic neuromas].

Acoustic neuromas are the most common tumors in the cerebellopontine angle. The molecular mechanisms involved in generation and growth of these tumors are not completely elucidated. Many radiological, clinic and immunohistochemistry data were correlated to tumor growth. We studied 11 acoustic neuromas surgically treated at Hospital São Paulo/Unifesp and correlated clinical and radiological data with proliferative index (Ki-67). The size of the tumors were positively correlationated with proliferative index. No other correlation had statistic significativity.

Therapeutic time window of methylprednisolone in acoustic injury.

HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to investigate the therapeutic time window of methylprednisolone in acoustic injury. BACKGROUND: Although glucocorticoids have been widely used in the treatment of acoustic injury, the therapeutic time window of glucocorticoids in acoustic injury has never been examined. METHODS: Mice were exposed to 4-kHz pure tone of 128-dB sound pressure level for 4 hours. Auditory brainstem response was examined before, immediately after, and 2 weeks after acoustic overexposure. RESULTS: Methylprednisolone significantly improved the auditory brainstem response threshold shift

The influence of the Internet on decision making in acoustic neuroma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the access to and the use of the Internet by acoustic neuroma patients as a medical information source, and the influence of the Internet on decision-making, as well as the patients' views on the quality of particular sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective 27-item questionnaire was sent to 138 consecutive acoustic neuroma patients diagnosed between 1997 and 2002. The study included patients treated by conservative, radiotherapeutic and surgical modalities. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Patient demographics, the extent of Internet use as well as quality and quantity of

[Non-acoustic parastemal schwannomas: results of treatment].

The paper presents the results of treatment in 15 cases with non-acoustic parastemal schwannomas, which amounts to 4.3% in this histological subgroup. Among them, there were 7 (2.0%) patients with trigeminal tumors, 5 (1.4%) with facial nerve schwannomas, 3 (0.9%) with schwannomas, which were localized in the jugular foramen. In 4 (57.1%) cases, trigeminal schwannomas were localized in the posterior fossa and in (3.42.9) cases, they spread into the infra- and supratentorial areas. Tumors of the jugular foramen spread extracranially in 2 (66.7%). Their diagnosis was based on clinical intrascopi

Manipulation of fluid objects with acoustic radiation pressure.

Conditions are summarized for manipulating and stabilizing fluid objects based on the acoustic radiation pressure of standing waves. Examples include (but are not limited to) liquid drops, gas bubbles in liquids, and cylindrical liquid bridges. The emphasis is on situations where the characteristic wavelength of the acoustic field is large in comparison to the relevant dimension of the fluid object. Tables are presented for ease of comparing the signs of qualitatively different radiation force parameters for a variety of fluid objects.

Relative indications for radiosurgery and microsurgery for acoustic schwannoma.

The physical and biological principles underlying the use of radiosurgery for the treatment of vestibular schwannomas of up to 2.5 cm in diameter are reviewed together with the historical controversies that have surrounded its introduction. The results in terms of mortality, quality of life, preservation of facial movement and hearing, incidence of shunt-dependent hydrocephalus, cancer neogenesis and brain stem damage are compared in the Marseilles series of 600 microsurgical procedures and 830 Gamma knife procedures and with the peer-reviewed literature. The key principles of a steep profile

MRI analysis of hydrocephalus associated with acoustic neurinoma.

We investigated the hydrocephalus in 24 patients associated with acoustic neurinoma. We found the high incidence of homo-lateral ventricular dilatation to the side of the acoustic neurinoma. Utilizing magnetic resonance imaging, the diameter of the tumor parallel to the pyramidal bone, diameter of the tumor perpendicular to the pyramidal bone, grade of the 4th ventricle deviation, and the shape of the tumor (round or oval) were analyzed. Ten (42%) of the 24 patients with acoustic neurinoma were found to have hydrocephalus. Seven (70%) of the 10 patients with hydrocephalus exhibited asymmetrica
