Increasing data are known for dialogue between neuroendocrine and immune systems recently. Results of molecular genetic studies provided evidences for common languages of these systems by various signals including neurotransmitters, hormones, cytokines. It is proved the immune system is able to produce neurotransmitters and hormones and endocrine organs can even result in cytokines. This new integrative approach allows to investigate the physiologic events and diseases as interactions between the psycho-neuro-endocrine-immune systems. The autoimmune polyendocrine syndromes constitute a heterog

Insulin antibodies (IAA) can be detected in the serum of the majority of newly diagnosed IDDM patients prior to insulin therapy. In first degree relatives of IDDM patients, IAA are associated with an increased risk of development of IDDM. However, the disease specificity of IAA, detected by radiobinding assays, has not been addressed. We thus tested sera from patients with autoimmune disease for IAA. One of 29 (3%) patients with Graves' disease and five of 27 (19%) patients with SLE had IAA levels exceeding the range for normal controls. IAA were not detected in sera from 29 patients with Addi

Primary adrenal insufficiency is a rare disease. Its diagnosis remains a clinical challenge since the signs and symptoms of the disease are insidious in onset and non specific in nature. A case report of Addison's crisis induced by levothyroxine substitution therapy is described. This clinical case is discussed in details with a special emphasis to the published literature regarding the strategy of diagnosis and the specific therapy of primary adrenal insufficiency.

According to literature about 30 % of the patients with type 1 diabetes develop further autoimmune diseases. Thyroid dysfunction represents with 15‒30 % the most common disorder, followed by gastritis with 5‒10 %, celiac disease with 4‒9 % and vitiligo with 2‒10 %. Addison's disease seems to be less prevalent. Diagnostic procedures in the course of the comprehensive care for diabetic patients should therefore include screening for further autoimmune diseases.

In a patient who developed clinical signs of intracranial hypertension, bilateral papilledema and diplopia, in association with mild hypotension, hyponatremia and hyperkalemia, the hypothesis of Addison's disease was raised and confirmed. Substitutional therapy led to complete recovery. The present paper represents the first report of pseudotumor cerebri as the only clinical sign of an Addisonian crisis.

In two patients, a diagnosis of pernicious anemia was made without anemia, megaloblastosis and even macrocytosis. The diagnosis of pernicious anemia was suggested by the autoimmune abnormalities which are frequently associated with this disease: goitre with anti-thyroid and anti parietal cell antibodies, and besides this, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura in the first patient, vitiligo in the second. The morphological abnormalities were limited to slight macrocytosis in the first patient and to hypersegmentation of polymorphonuclear leucocyte in both. Vitamin B12 deficiency was demonstrated

Just Anorexia? Abstract. We report the case of a 30-year-old woman presenting with fatigue, loss of weight, nausea, emesis and hyponatremia. The evaluation proved Addison's disease due to an autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 2 with Hashimoto thyreoiditis. Under substitution with hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone all the symptoms subsided completely.

Timely diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (T1D), especially in high-risk populations, is crucial for preventing serious health complications. T1D is a chronic progressive autoimmune disease that has presymptomatic stages that can be identified through the detection of islet autoantibodies. Given that T1D is associated with other autoimmune diseases, having either those diseases or a family history of them will represent a risk of T1D. From a search of the literature conducted in August 2024, we review here the evidence for the risk of either T1D or the development of T1D in association with other au

Schmidt's syndrome is characterized by the existence of adrenal insufficiency and lymphocytic thyroiditis, yet, it can also be accompanied of some other autoimmune diseases. Addison's disease usually produces infertility due to chronic anovulation, but patient who are properly treated can still be fertile. There are few reports of pregnancy and Schmidt's syndrome, this work presents a case treated with hormonal substitution therapy and successful obstetric outcome.

Genetic variants are linked to vitiligo and associated autoimmune diseases. We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of the rs12150220, rs2670660, and rs6502867 polymorphisms within the human NLR Family Pyrin Domain Containing 1 (NLRP1) gene. We initially identified 1,306 candidate articles through literature searches of Pubmed, WOS, Embase, CNKI, WANFANGI, Ovid, Scopus, and Cochrane in July 2017. After strict screening, we included 19 eligible case-control studies, and analyzed the data using Stata/SE 12.0 software. No difference between vitiligo cases and controls was detected fo

Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED, OMIM 240300) is a rare autoimmune disease caused by mutations in the autoimmune regulator (AIRE) gene on chromosome 21q22.3. This monogenic disease provides an interesting model for studies of other common and more complex autoimmune diseases. The most common components of APECED are chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, hypoparathyroidism, and Addison's disease, but several other endocrine deficiencies and ectodermal dystrophies also occur and the phenotype varies widely. The AIRE genotype also varies; 42 different mutations

In 1877 Harriet Staunton died in Penge, Kent, and four members of her family were convicted of her murder by malicious starvation. The defence attempted to show that she had died from tuberculous meningitis, but reappraisal of the evidence leads to the conclusion that she died from tuberculous Addison's disease and that the defendants were wrongly convicted.

A patient with Addison's disease required surgery have attempted suicide, by cutting his throat and wrist. He was also in an acute adrenal crisis, as a result of deliberately omitting his replacement steroid therapy. Urgent surgery was indicated and therefore anaesthesia was undertaken before the patient's adrenal crisis was fully controlled. The anaesthetic management is described.

Out of 1036 sera tested for the presence of antibodies to adrenal cortex using the indirect immunofluorescence (IFL) method, fifteen out of 323 patients with Graves' thyrotoxicosis, 6/105 Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 3/29 myxoedema, 2/49 asymptomatic autoimmune thyroiditis, 1/12 subacute thyroiditis, and 4/130 with myasthenia gravis were positive. Thirty antibody-positive non-addisonian patients were tested for subclinical adrenocortical failure and followed up over a period of 1-3.5 years. Three women with Graves' disease had biochemical signs of early Addison's disease at the first Synacthen tes

Described more than 150 years ago by Thomas Addison, adrenal gland dysfunction, while treatable, remains a clinically significant and potentially fatal disease. Vague and non-specific symptomatology can delay diagnosis of adrenal insufficiency and lead to adrenal crisis. Affected individuals may delay self-management due to knowledge deficits or lack of required therapies. Advanced practice nurses must remain vigilant for signs and symptoms of adrenal insufficiency and prevention of crisis. Education of patients and their caregivers/family members must emphasize early intervention with regards

We describe two cases of autoimmune polyendocrinopathy syndrome as a cause of primary ovarian failure. Antibodies against various endocrine organs cause pluriglandular insufficiency, in most cases hypoparathyroidism. Addison's disease, and primary ovarian insufficiency. In these patients, careful examination of all endocrine organs is necessary in order to provide an adequate hormone replacement.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The multisystemic effects of COVID-19 are becoming evident. In the adrenal gland, adrenal hemorrhage and infarction af … ated ACTH level, low cortisol level, and presence of 21-hydroxylase antibodies were consistent with Addison disease. COVID-19 might have contributed to rapid, clinically relevant disease progression after the infection.
CONCLUSION: The development of autoimmune Addison disease in the patient might be related to the prior COVID-19 infection.

Schmidt syndrome or autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 2 is an autoimmune disorder that affects many hormone-producing (endocrine) glands. With the role of genetics and familial predisposition, autoimmune thyroid disease in combination with Addison's disease is the most common presentation. Diabetes mellitus, hyperparathyroidism, pernicious anemia, hypogonadism, vitiligo, chronic atrophic gastritis, chronic autoimmune hepatitis, alopecia, myasthenia gravis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, and thrombocytic purpura may or may not be present. We present a case of a 28-year-old male,

We report a patient with late-onset mucocutaneous pigmentation characteristic of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, who also developed hyperpigmented macules within pre-existing psoriatic plaques. This has rarely been reported. Macular pigmentation of the forehead and dorsum of the fingers was also a prominent feature. It is important to consider other causes of mucocutaneous pigmentation including Addison's disease, the Laugier-Hunziker syndrome, chemotherapeutic agents and HIV disease.

The most compelling case for autoimmune mediated hypogonadism occurs when ovarian failure is part of an autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS). In patients with the rare, recessively inherited type 1 APS (APS-1), characterized by the triad of chronic mucocutaneous moniliasis, hypoparathyroidism, and Addison's disease, primary amenorrhea (elevated pituitary gonadotropins) or oligomenorrhea and infertility are constant features. Ovarian failure is associated with autoantibodies to steroid hormone secreting cells in the adrenal cortex, Leydig cells of the testes, granulosa/thecal cells of the Gr
