[Application of Xstrain in the evaluation of heart function in children with tonsil adenoidal hypertrophy].

OBJECTIVE: To study the value of Xstrain technology in the evaluation of cardiac function in children with tonsil adenoidal hypertrophy (TAH). METHODS: Thirty-five children with TAH (TAH group) and 20 normal age-matched children (control group) were enrolled. The left ventricular wall movement in the vertical, radial and circumferential directions and the right ventricular tricuspid annulus movement were detected using Xstrain technology. RESULTS: The systolic and early diastolic velocities of tricuspid annulus in the TAH group were higher than those in the control group. The systolic and di

Optimal utilization of histopathologic analysis of tonsil and adenoid specimens in the pediatric population.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the optimal utilization of histopathologic analysis of tonsil and adenoid specimens in the pediatric population. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed on 7837 tonsil and adenoid specimens submitted from January 2004 to April 2008. The records were reviewed for the patients' age, sex, and pathologic analysis. The time and cost per analysis of each specimen were determined. RESULTS: Histopathology was performed on 347 specimens based on clinical suspicion by the surgeon, a difference of 0.5 cm or more among tonsils, gross abnormalities, and history of malignancy,

Choroidal metastasis from submandibular salivary gland adenoid cystic carcinoma.

A case of choroidal metastasis from an adenoid cystic carcinoma ofsubmandibular salivary gland is described. A 50-year-old woman with loss of vision in her left eye for 1 week was evaluated clinically, radiologically, and pathologically. A fundus image of the left eye showed an amelanotic, plateau-shaped choroidal mass measuring 17 x 12 X 4 mm with overlying exudative retinal detachment. A choroidal biopsy was consistent with metastatic adenoid cystic carcinoma from her submandibular salivary gland treated 5 years previously. She was treated with external beam radiotherapy but developed liver

Survival from salivary glands adenoid cystic carcinoma in European populations.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of salivary gland origin is rare. The EUROCARE data provide a good opportunity to study the survival of this uncommon cancer in a large population. A total of 2611 cases, aged 15 to 99 years, diagnosed between 1983 and 1994 with primary salivary gland ACC were analyzed. Thirty-two population based cancer registries from seventeen countries participating in EUROCARE contributed the data. Relative survival by sex, age, period of diagnosis, region, site and stage, and the adjusted relative excess risk (RER) of death were estimated. Survival since diagnosis was 94%,

[Correlation between immunohistochemical indices of adenoid vegetations and health of ailing children].

We studied correlations between clinical characteristics of ailing children and their immunohistochemical parameters. Clinical status was assessed by the degree of adenoid vegetations, duration of the disease, the presence of chronic tonsillitis or its combination with adenoiditis. We used the following immunohistochemical parameters: the level of CD3+ in histological slices and the presence or absence of IgA-producing cells. Correlation was found between the presence or absence of IgA-producing cells and the degree of adenoid vegetations as well as the presence only of chronic tonsillitis or

A case report of coexistence of a sialolith and an adenoid cystic carcinoma in the submandibular gland.

The occurrence of sialoliths in the submandibular gland is 80% due to the specific anatomy of both the gland and its duct. The diagnosis is rather easy because of the obvious clinical signs of the entity. Imaging studies are always necessary in order to treat the patient as effectively as possible. The stones do not tend to occur within the gland as frequently as in the respective duct. The coexistence of sialoliths and malignant tumors is extremely rare. A 70-year-old woman with intraparenchymal stone was operated in our ENT department. In addition to the sialolith the pathological examinatio

[Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the larynx-hypopharynx. A case report and review of the literature].

Laryngeal or hypopharyngeal localization of adenoid cystic carcinoma is rare due to the poor distribution of the accesory salivary glands in this area. We report one case of such neoplasm on that area, with its diagnosis confirmed histologically. The required a total laryngectomy with later reoperations because of hemorrhage and pharyngeal fistula. One year after the surgery and in spite of postoperative radiotherapy multiple pulmonary metastasis were detected causing the death of the patient. We review the literature of this tumor whose prognosis is much worse than epidermoid or scamous carci

A laboratory and clinical evaluation of single-use instruments for tonsil and adenoid surgery.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the quality and consistency of single-use adenotonsillectomy instruments available in the UK with reusable instruments and examine their performance in a clinical setting. DESIGN: A laboratory assessment of each reusable instrument created a detailed specification for the respective single-use equivalent. A surveillance system monitored the performance of a selected set of specified single-use instruments. SETTING: Single-use instruments were withdrawn shortly after their introduction in 2001. Persisting concerns from the Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee le

[Additional diagnostic methods for recording of adenoid hypertrophy in children with allergic rhinitis].

The role of enlarged adenoids and tonsils in upper airway obstruction has become well-established earlier, thus, adenoidectomy with or without tonsillectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the paediatric population. Direct assessment of adenoidal size is difficult and no definitive method is so far available to complement clinical assessment. The most important diagnostic techniques are recording of obstructive symptoms, transoral posterior rhinoscopic examination, radiological evaluation, such as lateral radiography of the adenoid and nasopharyngeal magnetic reson…

[The influence of birch pollen on adenoid hypertrophy in children with seasonal allergic rhinitis].

The adenoid is a part of Waldeyer's ring, the basic function of which is antibody formation, they react later against a great variety of antigens. Pediatric adenoidal obstruction of the nasal airway is associated with significant morbidity and is a frequent indication for surgery, but its relationship to allergy has not been often studied. To examine the influence of atopy on the adenoid hypertrophy we studied 9 children ages 4 to 8 years, who had hypersensitivity to birch pollen and the seasonal allergic rhinitis. We conclude that allergy and sensitivity to birch pollen and probably to other

Assessment of adenoidal obstruction in children: clinical signs versus roentgenographic findings.

OBJECTIVE: As part of a comprehensive study of indications for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, we investigated the reliability of standardized clinical assessments and standardized roentgenographic assessments of adenoidal obstruction of the nasopharynx, and the degree of correlation between clinical assessments and roentgenographic assessments. METHODS: We rated the degree of patients' mouth breathing and patients' speech hyponasality on a 4-point scale (none = 1; mild = 2; moderate = 3; marked = 4), we averaged the ratings for each child to obtain a Nasal Obstruction Index, and we determin

Adenoid size is related to severity but not the number of episodes of obstructive apnea in children.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which adenotonsillar hypertrophy contributes to the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty-three consecutive children who were referred to a sleep disorders center for evaluation of suspected OSA had standard lateral neck roentgenography performed. Adenoid size was determined by measuring the adenoidal-nasopharyngeal (AN) ratio. Tonsil size was quantitated on physical examination. The severity of OSA was determined by full-night polysomnography in the sleep laboratory. RESULTS: All of t

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of Bartholin's gland: a review of the literature and report of a patient.

We report the case of a 77-year-old white female with adenoid cystic carcinoma of Bartholin's gland. To date only 45 cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of Bartholin's gland have been reported in the world literature. The longest reported survival is 27 years. This patient was originally diagnosed 33 years ago and presented with her fourth recurrence. She was treated with radical surgery and did well for 6 months, but later died secondary to renal failure. Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the Bartholin's gland is a rare tumor of the vulva. When diagnosed the treatment should be tailored to the patien

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the left main bronchus mimicking MacLeod's syndrome.

A 15 year old girl who was labelled as having MacLeod's syndrome on the basis of a chest radiograph was subsequently, at the age of 23 years, found to have an adenoid cystic carcinoma obstructing the left main bronchus. This case emphasises the need to exclude a central lesion in cases of unilateral hyperlucent lung.
