To examine the precise role of potassium and aldosterone on acid-base composition and on collecting tubule ATPases, glucocorticoid-replete adrenalectomized rats were replaced with zero, physiological, or pharmacological doses of aldosterone and were fed varying potassium diets to produce hypokalemia, normokalemia, or hyperkalemia. Radiochemical measurement of ATPase activities showed that collecting tubule H/K-ATPase changed inversely with potassium and not with aldosterone whereas H-ATPase changed directly with aldosterone but not with potassium. Adenosine (Adenocard) has a potent but very transient negative dromotropic effect on atrioventricular (A-V) nodal conduction. By slowing A-V nodal conduction, adenosine may interrupt a re-entry pathway causing paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia or facilitate the diagnosis of other supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) by exposing the underlying atrial activity. We report 15 postoperative cases in which adenosine was used to clarify the diagnosis of postoperative SVT, and allowed the appropriate postoperative care.

We describe the effects of 5'-N-ethylcarboxamidoadenosine (NECA), a mixed A2a/A2b adenosine receptor agonist and 2-[p-(carboxyethyl)-phenylethylamino]-5'-N-ethylcarboxamidoaden osin e (CGS 21680), a selective A2a agonist, on cyclic AMP and N-acetylserotonin synthesis in rat pineal gland. NECA, 1 and 10 microM, increased cyclic AMP by 5- and 25-fold and N-acetylserotonin by 40- and 60-fold respectively, whereas CGS 21680 at the same concentrations was ineffective. These results argue for the presence of adenosine A2b receptors in rat pinealocytes.
