The clinical significance of a proper eye drop application technique was evaluated in Japanese glaucoma patients. Patients diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma having intraocular pressure (IOP) greater than 21 mmHg were treated with eye drops at home. This study was conducted to assess the additive efficacy of ophthalmic topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) with topical anesthesia in the control of pain associated with clear corneal cataract extraction. The patients who received three days of preoperative topical NSAIDs had a statistically significant decrease in their level of discomfort. We have previously shown that three days of preoperative NSAIDs can reduce postoperative inflammation after cataract surgery. This study demonstrates that ophthalmic topical NSAIDs also decrease discomfort during surgery.

Thirty-two patients (20 males and 12 females, mean age 31 ys) with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis to grass pollen, were selected for this study. Nedocromil sodium 2% ophthalmic solution was given at the dosage of 1 drop four times a day for four weeks during the month of June. On a daily diary card each patient had to report the severity of the symptoms: itchy eyes, lacrimation, red eyes and photophobia, following an arbitrary score from 0 to 3 (0 = no symptom, 1 = mild, 2 = medium, 3 = severe). We tested a new preparation of interferon-beta (IFN-beta) to determine its efficacy and tolerability in the treatment of herpetic keratitis. The 20 patients admitted to the trial were selected from patients who had not received any previous treatment with virustatic agent; they were treated in a comparative, randomised open trial with eye drop containing IFN-beta or iododesoxyuridine (10 vs. 10). Examination of the data show that 10 out of 10 patients treated with IFN-beta respond positively to the treatment, furthermore it showed that IFN-beta produce no local or general toxicity.

The effectiveness of 3 alpha, 5 beta-tetrahydrocortisol (3 alpha, 5 beta-THF), a metabolite of cortisol, in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in rabbits made ocular hypertensive with glucocorticoids suggested its use in patients with Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG).
