Development and validation of the resource loss due to reduction in gaming time scale among adolescent internet gamers in China.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent internet gaming disorder (IGD) is prevalent and positively associated with gaming time, a reduction of which is a common means of IGD prevention/treatment. Personal/interpersonal resource losses due to the reduction in gaming time (RL-RGT) are plausible. According to the Conservation of Resource (COR) theory, RL-RGT may cause mental distress and maladaptive behaviors. No study has investigated such relationships, partially due to the lack of validated tools assessing RL-RGT. This study aimed to develop and validate such a scale (RL-RGTS). METHODS: A cross-sectional surv

Development and validation of the scoliosis misconception scale (SMS) for assessing level of misconception of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about patients' understanding of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). This paper aims to develop and validate the Scoliosis Misconception Scale (SMS) and to explore patients' level of misconception about AIS. METHODS: A total of 195 patients who were newly referred with newly diagnosed AIS were recruited to assess their levels of misconception and psychological distress before and after their first consultation with a specialist. The 17-item SMS was administered to assess patients' level of misconception about AIS and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10

Development and validation of a population-based model for predicting the regional lymph node metastasis in adolescent differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) is a rare type of thyroid cancer that represents a special entity of all endocrine-related cancer. This study aims to establish the first nomogram for predicting the regional (central and lateral) lymph node metastasis (LNM) in the adolescent population for better surgical management. METHOD: We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathology characteristics of adolescent patients with DTC in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database between 2010 and 2015. RESULTS: A total of 1,930 adolescent patients between the ages

Structural and functional MRI of altered brain development in a novel adolescent rat model of quinpirole-induced compulsive checking behavior.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is increasingly considered to be a neurodevelopmental disorder. However, despite insights in neural substrates of OCD in adults, less is known about mechanisms underlying compulsivity during brain development in children and adolescents. Therefore, we developed an adolescent rat model of compulsive checking behavior and investigated developmental changes in structural and functional measures in the frontostriatal circuitry. Five-weeks old Sprague Dawley rats were subcutaneously injected with quinpirole (n = 21) or saline (n = 20) twice a week for five weeks.

The Development of Medication and Psychotherapy from 1952 to 1957 in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Clinics Weissenau and Gütersloh Abstract. Objective: As a result of recent discussions concerning the misuse of medication in children in postwar Germany, the paper analyzes the treatment methods, especially psychopharmacotherapy, as well as therapeutic approaches employed in two German child and adolescent psychiatric hospitals (Weissenau and Guetersloh). We investigated the progression of prescription and the administration of psychotropic and experimental drugs between 1952 and 1957. Me

Fully automated patellofemoral MRI segmentation using holistically nested networks: Implications for evaluating patellofemoral osteoarthritis, pain, injury, pathology, and adolescent development.

PURPOSE: Our clinical understanding of the relationship between 3D bone morphology and knee osteoarthritis, as well as our ability to investigate potential causative factors of osteoarthritis, has been hampered by the time-intensive nature of manually segmenting bone from MR images. Thus, we aim to develop and validate a fully automated deep learning framework for segmenting the patella and distal femur cortex, in both adults and actively growing adolescents. METHODS: Data from 93 subjects, obtained from on institutional review board-approved protocol, formed the study database. 3D sagittal g

Severe atherosclerosis of the aorta and development of peripheral T-cell lymphoma in an adolescent with angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia.

We report an adolescent girl with a history of angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) diagnosed at the age of 10 years. The patient also suffered from chronic persistent multiresistant herpes simplex virus infection. Atherosclerotic occlusive disease of the abdominal aorta and its major branches was observed at the age of 17 years, necessitating vascular surgical intervention 1 year later because of disease progression. Histological examination of the aorta disclosed widespread atherosclerosis and high levels of gene expression of both T-helper cell type (Th) 1- and Th2-derived cyt

Obesity and the development of insulin resistance and impaired fasting glucose in black and white adolescent girls: a longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: Age at onset of type 2 diabetes has decreased during the past 20 years, especially in black women. Studies of factors associated with insulin resistance and hyperglycemia in preadolescent and adolescent populations are essential to understanding diabetes development. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Growth and Health Study (NGHS) is a 10-year cohort study of the development of obesity in black and white girls. Two NGHS centers examined the associations of obesity, puberty, and race with fasting insulin, glucose, and homeostasis mode

Adolescent Hormonal Contraceptive Use in the Context of Brain Development and Depression Risk: A Review and Considerations for Future Research.

Hormonal contraceptives (HCs) contain synthetic gonadal hormones that act on receptors widely distributed throughout the brain, thereby altering the body's endogenous hormonal milieu in ways that may influence brain and behavior. Although HCs are among the most commonly prescribed medications for female adolescents, their effects on the developing brain and mental health remain poorly understood. This gap is concerning given that adolescence is marked by substantial hormonal change, neurodevelopment, and a sharp rise in depression risk among female youth. In this review, we synthesize current

Development of a Family-Based Prevention Model for Adolescent Mental Health Problems: A Socio-Ecological Approach in the Indonesian Context.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health is a growing global concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where preventive frameworks remain underdeveloped. In Indonesia, existing adolescent mental health initiatives remain largely school- and health-service oriented, with limited operational integration of families as preventive actors. This study aimed to develop a Family-Based Prevention Model for Adolescent Mental Health Problems using a socio-ecological approach tailored to the Indonesian context. METHODS: Employing an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design, qualitative dat

Combined low intensity blood flow restriction and high intensity half squat training improves lower limb force development in adolescent wrestlers.

Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) has attracted attention due to its advantages in muscle strength enhancement. This paper investigates the effects of different training programs on teenage female wrestlers' lower limb strength. Twenty-four teenage female wrestlers were recruited and randomly divided into three groups, namely the blood flow restriction training group (BFRT group), the regular group (HST group), and the combined group (BFRT-HST group). The BFRT group performed low-intensity blood flow restriction half-squat training (LI-BFR-HST), the HST group performed high-intensity half

Modifiable factors affecting the development of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in Chinese students: insights from a questionnaire survey on abnormal performance.

OBJECTIVES: Prioritizing adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) prevention over treatment is crucial, especially in countries like China where students are heavily focused on academics. Little research combines the educational characteristics of junior and senior high school students in China to explore factors contributing to AIS. Our aim was to investigate the correlation between performance indicators and potential AIS determine differences between junior and senior high school students. METHOD: We conducted a general investigation of potential AIS-related indicators in students attending a

Novel Development of a Large Cerebral Cavernous Malformation in an Adolescent With a History of Familial Cerebral Cavernous Malformation Syndrome.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) are capillary vascular malformations of the central nervous system (CNS). These lesions can be either familial or sporadic. We present a case of a 16-year-old girl with familial CCM syndrome who presented with a six-month history of chronic headaches. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a large cavernoma in the right frontal lobe that had not been present on a prior scan performed eight years earlier. This case presentation demonstrates the possibility of significant novel cavernoma development further into adolescence.

The role of the paraspinal muscles in the development of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis based on surface electromyography and radiographic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with idiopathic scoliosis commonly present with an imbalance of the paraspinal muscles. However, it is unclear whether this muscle imbalance is an underlying cause or a result of idiopathic scoliosis. This study aimed to investigate the role of paraspinal muscles in the development of idiopathic scoliosis based on surface electromyography (sEMG) and radiographic analyses. METHODS: This was a single-center prospective study of 27 patients with single-curve idiopathic scoliosis. Posteroanterior whole-spine radiographs and sEMG activity of the erector spinae muscles were obt

Long-Term Effects of Preterm Birth on Children's Brain Structure: An Analysis of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study.

Approximately 10% of births are preterm [PTB; <37 weeks gestational age (GA)], which confers risk for cognitive, behavioral, and mental health challenges. Using the large and relatively diverse (i.e., designed to reflect sociodemographic variation in the United States population) Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD Study), we characterized the impact of PTB on brain structure in middle-late childhood (9-10 years). The ABCD sample covers the GA spectrum, and the large sample size (∼11,500) permits consideration of how associations between PTB and brain structure are impacted by G

Hyperbolic discounting rates and risk for problematic alcohol use in youth enrolled in the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development study.

Adolescence is the peak period for the emergence of substance use, which can lead to long-term psychosocial, occupational and interpersonal complications. Ongoing large-scale, longitudinal, consortium initiatives, such as the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study, offer unprecedented opportunities to elucidate key risk factors for problematic substance use in a well-powered sample and to examine how changes in risk factors relate to symptoms across time. Delay discounting has been proposed as a putative risk marker for early substance-use initiation and other forms of psychop

The Development of Adolescent Chronic Pain following Traumatic Brain Injury and Surgery: The Role of Diet and Early Life Stress.

Pain is evolutionarily necessary for survival in that it reduces tissue damage by signaling the body to respond to a harmful stimulus. However, in many circumstances, acute pain becomes chronic, and this is often dysfunctional. Adolescent chronic pain is a growing epidemic with an unknown etiology and limited effective treatment options. Given that the relationship between acute pain and chronic pain is not straightforward, there is a need to better understand the factors that contribute to the chronification of pain. Since early life factors are critical to a variety of outcomes in the develo

Development and Validation of a Scale to Measure Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Stigma: Results From Young Women in Ghana.

Young women's experiences with sexual and reproductive health (SRH) stigma may contribute to unintended pregnancy. Thus, stigma interventions and rigorous measures to assess their impact are needed. Based on formative work, we generated a pool of 51 items on perceived stigma around different dimensions of adolescent SRH and family planning (sex, contraception, pregnancy, childbearing, abortion). We tested items in a survey study of 1,080 women ages 15 to 24 recruited from schools, health facilities, and universities in Ghana. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) identified the most conceptually
