Neuro-ophthalmic manifestations of human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Both the afferent visual pathways and ocular motor system may be affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Coexisting infections and neoplastic processes in the eye and brain create a diagnostic challenge for the clinician. This article discusses neuroophthalmic manifestations associated with HIV and AIDS, with emphasis on clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment.

Diagnosis of urinary bladder dysfunction in diabetes mellitus.

During the past decade the ability to assess urinary bladder function in diabetes mellitus has improved considerably because of changed concepts of urinary bladder function, imporved methods for evaluation, and increased capability for treatment. Evaluation of patients with urinary bladder dysfunction and diabetes mellitus has shown that peripheral visceral afferent pathways are first affected, followed by detrusor reflex decompensation.

KW-7158 [(2S)-(+)-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-(5,5,10-trioxo-4,10-dihydrothieno[3,2-c][1]benzothiepin-9-yl)propanamide] enhances A-type K+ currents in neurons of the dorsal root ganglion of the adult rat.

Recent studies revealed that a new compound, KW-7158 [(2S)-(+)-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-(5,5,10-trioxo-4,10-dihydrothieno[3,2-c][1]benzothiepin-9-yl)propanamide], can depress the excitability of afferent pathways from the urinary bladder and reduce bladder overactivity induced by chemical irritation of the urinary tract with xylene, an agent that sensitizes capsaicin-sensitive, C-fiber afferent nerves. In the present experiments, we examined the mechanisms that might underlie the depressant effect of KW-7158 on primary afferent neurons by studying the actions of the compound on ion…

The distribution of visceral primary afferents from the pelvic nerve to Lissauer's tract and the spinal gray matter and its relationship to the sacral parasympathetic nucleus.

The central distribution of visceral primary afferent fibers from the pelvic nerve of the cast and the relationship of these fibers to preganglionic neurons of the sacral parasympathetic neurons (SPN) have been studied. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) applied to the cut pelvic nerve was detected ipsilaterally in preganglionic neurons and dorsal root ganglion cells (segments S1-S3), and in central afferent projections to Lissauer's tract (LT), the dorsal columns, the dorsolateral funiculus, and spinal gray matter. The afferent projections were strongest in the region of the SPN (S1-S3) but extende

Noncanonical Taste Transduction of Sugars Elicits Responses in a Dedicated Subset of Gustatory Afferent Neurons.

In taste buds, the GPCR heterodimer TAS1R2 + TAS1R3 is considered the canonical taste receptor for sugars and noncaloric sweeteners. Nevertheless, evidence has accumulated for the presence of an alternative noncanonical transduction pathway that detects sugars, particularly at high concentration. Sodium-glucose transporter 1 (SGLT1) has been proposed as this transducer, selectively transporting glucose into a subset of taste bud cells which then transmit the signal to taste afferent neurons. To test for TAS1R-independent sweet taste detection, we conducted in vivo Ca2+ imaging on geniculate ga

Restoration of Penile Sensation Through Neurological Bypass in Rats.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the feasibility of the penile afferent pathway by the cutaneous branch of the genitofemoral nerve to the dorsal nerve of penile transfer in rats. METHODS: A total of 54 male rats were randomly divided into model group (n = 18), resection group (n = 18), and sham group (n = 18). In the model group, the distal stump of bilateral DNP was anastomosed to the proximal stump of the bilateral CGN through end-to-end neurorrhaphy. In the resection group, bilateral DNP was severed and ligated, and no end-to-end anastomosis was performed. Only a surgical incision was made in the sha

Vestibular damage in chronic ototoxicity: a mini-review.

Ototoxicity is a major cause of the loss of hearing and balance in humans. Ototoxic compounds include pharmaceuticals such as aminoglycoside antibiotics, anti-malarial drugs, loop diuretics and chemotherapeutic platinum agents, and industrial chemicals including several solvents and nitriles. Human and rodent data indicate that the main target of toxicity is hair cells (HCs), which are the mechanosensory cells responsible for sensory transduction in both the auditory and the vestibular system. Nevertheless, the compounds may also affect the auditory and vestibular ganglion neurons. Exposure to

A closed-loop approach to monitor and manipulate the neural control of blood pressure.

BACKGROUND: Arterial baroreceptors are mechanosensitive nerve endings that detect blood pressure deviations and transmit this information to the central nervous system via vagal afferent neurons. Vagal afferent neuron cell bodies reside in the nodose ganglion (NG) and they terminate in the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) within the brainstem, thus serving as a critical component of the baroreflex circuitry. We previously found that specific angiotensin-sensitive vagal afferent nerve terminals within the NTS (referred to as NTSAT1aR afferents) are sufficient to initiate baroreflex responses

Differential projections of the densocellular and intermediate parts of the hyperpallium in the pigeon (Columba livia).

The visual Wulst in birds shows a four-layered structure: apical part of the hyperpallium (HA), interstitial part of HA (IHA), intercalated part of hyperpallium (HI), and densocellular part of hyperpallium (HD). HD also connects with the hippocampus and olfactory system. Because HD is subjacent to HI, the two have been treated as one structure in many studies, and the fiber connections of HD have been examined by afferents and efferents originating outside HD. However, to clarify the difference between these two layers, they need to be treated separately. In the present study, the fiber connec

[Selective fasicular neurotomy for spastic equinovarus foot deformity in cerebral palsy children].

Spasticity is usually treated by rehabilitation, orthosis, chemical denervations, orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery. Selective fascicular neurotomy is a neurosurgical procedure consisting in partial section of selected motor nerves innervating spastic muscles. Neurotomy is indicated in cases of localised disabling spasticity without musculotendinous shortening, resistant to chemical denervation and for which a motor nerve block with anaesthetic has given a good functional result. Neurotomy includes division of the afferent Ia and Ib fibers, unable to recover, leading to permanent disappeara

The primary projections of the lateral-line nerves of the Florida gar, Lepisosteus platyrhincus.

Gars, like most other ray-finned fishes, possess lines of superficial and canal neuromasts that form highly ordered spatial arrays on the head and trunk. These neuromasts are innervated by three pairs of cranial nerves: anterior, middle and posterior lateral-line nerves. Application of horseradish peroxidase to the roots of these nerves indicates that the afferent fibers of each nerve terminate throughout the rostrocaudal extent of the ipsilateral octavolateralis column, composed of medial and caudal octavolateralis nuclei, as well as rostrally in the eminentia granularis of the cerebellum. A horseradish peroxidase study of the innervation of the internal structures of the eye. Evidence for a direct pathway.

The sources of innervation of the internal structures of the eye in monkey and rabbit were investigated by injecting horseradish peroxidase (HRP) intraocularly and monitoring its retrograde transport. HRP-labeled cells were found in the ciliary ganglia and in the midbrain throughout the dorsoventral extent of the midline of the oculomotor complex. The results suggest that a direct pathway exists from the midbrain, and it is argued that this pathway is for the control of accomodation. Either this pathway is direct, with no synapse interposed, or the postsynaptic neurons are near or in the intri

Neural pathway mediating somatic evoked responses in the caudate nucleus of cats.

The course of somatic afferents to caudate nucleus (CN) was investigated. In curaized cats discrete lesions in intralaminar nuclei, n. centralis medialis (NCM) affect evoked response (ER) in CN to radial nerve stimulation. NCM lesions totally abolish these somatic responses, while after subthalamic lesions ER appear only when a high stimulus intensity is used. Lesions in the specific relay nuclei, ventralis posterior lateralis (VPL) have no effect on somatic ER in CN. Barbiturates (10 mg/kg) abolish somatic ER in CN. Stimulation of the ponto-mesencephalic reticular formation (RF) in a region w

Hypoxia transduction by carotid body chemoreceptors in mice lacking dopamine D(2) receptors.

In spinal cats, locomotor recovery without rehabilitation is limited, but weight-bearing stepping returns with treadmill training. We studied whether neurotrophins administered to the injury site also restores locomotion in untrained spinal cats and whether combining both neurotrophins and training further improves recovery. Ordinary rat fibroblasts or a mixture of fibroblasts secreting brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) (Fb-NTF) were grafted into T12 spinal transection sites. Cats with each type of transplant were divided into two groups: one receiving daily tr

Vertebral position alters paraspinal muscle spindle responsiveness in the feline spine: effect of positioning duration.

Proprioceptive information from paraspinal tissues including muscle contributes to neuromuscular control of the vertebral column. We investigated whether the history of a vertebra's position can affect signalling from paraspinal muscle spindles. Single unit recordings were obtained from muscle spindle afferents in the L6 dorsal roots of 30 Nembutal-anaesthetized cats. Each afferent's receptive field was in the intact muscles of the low back. The L6 vertebra was controlled using a displacement-controlled feedback motor and was held in each of three different conditioning positions for durations

A search for the cortical gustatory area in the hamster.

The gustatory area was searched in the cerebral cortex of the hamster by means of a combined approach using electrophysiological, behavioral, and histological experiments. The chorda tympani (CT), which innervates taste buds on the anterior part of the tongue, projected to a confined area anterior to the middle cerebral artery and just dorsal to the rhinal fissure. The trigeminal component of the lingual nerve (LN) area was located anterodorsal to the CT area, and the glossopharyngeal nerve (GN), which innervates taste buds on the posterior part of the tongue, was posterior to the CT area. Substance P in nociceptive sensory neurons.

Substance P is contained within a subpopulation of nociceptive primary sensory neurons that project to the superficial dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Stimulation of the peripheral processes of primary afferent fibres at intensities that activate A delta and C fibres elicits a pronounced release of substance P from the cat spinal cord in vivo. Experiments with the neurotoxins capsaicin and 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine have shown that substance P release from the spinal cord in vivo derives largely from afferent fibres. Intrathecal perfusion of the cat spinal cord with morphine abolishes the nerve-e
