Of the first 128 patients to receive either heart or heart and lung transplants at Papworth Hospital, four developed Toxoplasma gondii infections acquired from the donor heart and two died. Six patients had passively acquired T gondii antibody as a result of blood transfusions around the time of transplantation. A newly developed latex agglutination assay for the detection of genus-specific Leptospira antibodies in human sera was evaluated. Darkground Microscopy (DGM) was initially done on Plasma in the Department of Microbiology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal for 44 cases of suspected Leptospiral hepatorenal involvement. We evaluated the reliability of a passive bacterial agglutination test to detect Salmonella typhi somatic antigen(s) in the sera of patients with typhoid fever. Staphylococcus saprophyticus was found to differ from Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus by its ability to agglutinate sheep erythrocytes. On testing 30 strains of each species, 28 strains of S. saprophyticus and one strain each of the other two species, caused agglutination. Brucellosis is endemic in the Mediterranean area. In spite of the false negative results, the standard agglutination test remains the routine test for the diagnosis of brucellosis in southern Italy. We present a case of a patient with undulant fever and erythema nodosum-like skin lesions, with negative serum agglutination test, but isolated positivity of the ELISA test for anti-Brucella IgM. Two children developed erythema nodosum due to Pasteurella pseudotuberculosis. Neither case showed typical signs of P. pseudotuberculosis infection, but this cause was shown by positive agglutination tests. It is suggested that this organism is a more common cause of erythema nodosum than is at present recognized.
