Surgical problems in space: an overview.

Terrestrial experience indicates that surgical emergencies may cause significant morbidity in space, and may present unique problems. Microg … m. Microgravity surgical experience is limited, but studies conducted in the U.S.S.R. and on KC-135 aircraft indicate that, although surgical procedures are possible, weight and volume constraints, lack of gravity, altered fluid mechanics, and risk of environmental contamination mandate considerable modifications of conventional equipment and technique.

Physiological response to hyper- and hypogravity during rollercoaster flight.

Healthy male subjects--26--were flown in a Lear jet aircraft through rollercoaster and parabolic weightlessness flight. Eye movements, respiration, and blood volume pulse were recorded on magnetic tape. The same subjects underwent a battery of five vestibular tests in the laboratory on the ground. One subject in each flight was flown in an upright position, the other in a 90 degree foreward tilted head position. The foreward tilted subjects always reported motion sickness earlier and after fewer rollercoaster manoeuvres than the upright sitting subjects. It is concluded that the susceptibility…

A case series of flight attendants at risk of COVID-19 in South Korea in 2020.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has infected many individuals worldwide. Individuals in contact with unspecified people during their work, may be at risk of occupational exposure. On June 22, 2020, 1,435 overseas patients were identified in the Republic of Korea. Considering the influx of overseas patients, aircraft-mediated COVID-19 transmission is a major concern. CASE PRESENTATION: We presented two flight attendants diagnosed with COVID-19 who shared the crew's resting area and ground transportation, and discussed the risks experienced by flight attendants. CONCLUSIONS: Bi…

Burn injuries from small airplane crashes.

Because a large amount of general aviation activity occurs in Central Florida, we reviewed our admissions for victims of small airplane crashes. We identified 13 burn victims of small aircraft accidents over a 7-year period. Of the 13, 12 survived their burn injuries, an overall survival rate of 92%. The extent of burn injury, Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI), complications, other injuries and rehabilitation potential are reviewed. Burn injury resulting from small airplane crashes is usually survivable if the patient arrives at the Burn Center alive. These burn victims generally are high…

Aeromedical transport: its hidden problems.

Air transport can move patients safely and rapidly over long distances. However, changes in altitude can have disastrous effects because diminished ambient air pressure may allow gases in closed spaces and tissues to expand rapidly. Even pressurized commercial aircraft do not maintain sea-level pressure: cabin pressures equal to those at yp to 8000 ft may be experienced, diminishing oxygen tension in proportion. Air transport is absolutely contraindicated for patients with untreated pneumothorax, gas gangrene, or air trapped in the cranium and those who have recently undergone abdominal surger…

Civilian air travel and the otolaryngologist.

Thousands of individuals fly commercial airlines and private aircraft daily. One airline boasts of serving more than 100,000 passengers each day. Of these individuals exposed to barometric alterations, an undocumented number will develop significant barotrauma and may seek help from an otolaryngologist. Although many otolaryngologists learn the mechanics and management of barotrauma as military flight surgeons, residents in otolaryngology usually receive no specific training in this area. Because private and commercial aviation are so common today, we believe that a basic knowledge of barometr…

A Two-Dimensional Model for Pin-Load Distribution and Failure Analysis of Composite Bolted Joints.

Multibolt composite joints are widely used in aircraft structures. The determination of the pin-load distribution among the bolts is a critical step in the failure prediction of bolted joints. In this paper, a two-dimensional model of the multibolt composite structure is established for the pin-load distribution analysis. Its accuracy is validated by experimental results and the results from a 3D finite element model. Based on the determined pin-load distribution, FE models for a laminated plate with three-row fastener joints are built for failure prediction. Hashin stress criteria and the deg…

Cancer mortality among workers exposed to zinc chromate paints.

To evaluate the carcinogenicity of chromium compounds among user industries, the proportionate mortality experience of spray painters exposed to zinc chromate primer paints and electroplaters exposed to chromic acid in the aircraft maintenance industry was examined. Compared to the mortality patterns of U.S. white males, no excess of cancer was found in the 48 deaths among electroplaters. Analysis of the 202 deaths among spray painters revealed a significant excess of cancer, primarily of the respiratory tract. The relative increase of respiratory cancer showed a positive gradient with the len…

Identifying urban low-altitude traffic corridors: A computational fluid dynamics simulation approach.

With the rapid expansion of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) applications in urban logistics, inspection, and emergency services, structured low-altitude networks are increasingly needed to support strategic airspace management. This paper proposes a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-inspired method for identifying urban low-altitude traffic corridors (ULATCs). Rather than predicting atmospheric wind or actual UAV traffic dynamics, the method uses PhiFlow to construct synthetic incompressible velocity fields constrained by buildings and restricted areas. The Black Hole Approach and The Italian Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Spatial disorientation poses a significant hazard to aviators, particularly during low-visibility conditions, such as nocturnal operations or adverse weather scenarios. Visual illusions, exacerbated by the absence of external references, can mislead pilots into incorrect judgments of aircraft orientation, potentially resulting in catastrophic consequences. Perrone's black hole approach theory describes how lateral reference loss distorts perceived approach angles during landing. METHODS: This study systematically assessed black hole approach risk at 119 Italian civil and militar…

RPAS plume measurements for reconstructing radionuclide source terms.

In radiological accident scenarios, one of the most important early concerns is identifying the quantity of radiological material that has been released to the environment. This work presents a rapid method of characterizing a radioactive plume through the use of a remotely piloted aircraft system (RPAS) with onboard radiation detection and geolocation sensor packages. The RPAS was flown through a research reactor Ar-41 plume, and a gamma spectrometer on board the RPAS collected radiation counts and energies in various locations within the plume, while a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNS…

A cruise ship emergency medical evacuation triggered by handheld ultrasound findings and directed by tele-ultrasound.

Cruise ships travel far from shoreside medical care and present a unique austere medical environment. For the cruise ship physician, decisions regarding emergency medical evacuation can be challenging. In the event that a passenger or crew member becomes seriously ill or is injured, the use of point-of-care ultrasound may assist in clarifying the diagnosis and stratifying the risk of a delayed care, and at times expedite an emergent medical evacuation. In this report we present the first case reported in the literaturę of an emergency medical evacuation from a cruise ship triggered by handheld

Jet Fuel-Associated Occupational Contact Dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational contact dermatitis is a ubiquitous problem. Sailors onboard U.S. Navy vessels are at high risk given the multitude of potential workplace exposures. Solvents, petrochemicals, and fuels are abundant and can cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis. Symptoms of contact dermatitis can cause inability to work and, if chronic, may require a change in rating or job. Prevention of this issue requires patient education about the risks and correct personnel protective equipment. Even with preventative strategies in place, exposures and cases of contact dermatitis will oc
