Parental history of alcoholism: a risk factor for alcohol-related peripheral neuropathies.

The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors of alcohol-related peripheral neuropathies. A case-control study was performed to com … lic disease. Peripheral neuropathies were associated with a higher frequency of parental history of alcoholism, severity of alcohol dependence, heavier alcohol consumption and more alcohol-related somatic diseases. Multivariate analysis showed a strong relationship between a parental history of alcoholism and the presence of a neuropathy, when the severity o …

[Application of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test in heads of the family].

The habit of alcohol ingestion was examined in major caretakers of extreme poverty families who live in a county of the southern area of Santiago, Chile. For this purpose we used the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) validated in Chile. This test allows the disrimination between normal and abnormal alcohol drinkers. In this study the prevalence for abnormal drinkers was 40.3% with a 46.2% of prevalence if the major caretaker was the male parent and a 3.3% of prevalence if the major caretaker was a female one. This prevalence was studied associated with the following variables: socioeco…

Morbidity risk for alcoholism and drug abuse in relatives of cocaine addicts.

The morbidity risks for alcoholism in the first-degree relatives of a cohort of male cocaine addicts with or without alcoholism comorbidity were studied. Of the 71 patients who participated in our study, 40 (56.3%) had a history of alcoholism and 37 (59.1%) a history of opioid abuse. Twenty-two patients (30.1%) also met criteria for a lifetime diagnosis of a major psychiatric disorder. Significant increases in morbidity risks for alcoholism were found among male relatives of cocaine addicts with comorbid alcohol dependence when compared with relatives of cocaine addicts with no alcohol comorbi…

Multiple and single location drinking among DWI offenders referred for alcoholism evaluation.

Problem-drinker drivers who drank at multiple locations differ substantially from those who drank at only one location. Persons who drank at more than one location prior to their DWI arrest exhibit the most severe alcohol problems. Multilocation drinkers consumed significantly greater amounts of alcohol--for nearly all alcohol measures including consumption per drinking day, consumption averaged over 30 days, and consumption on the day of the DWI arrest--than single location drinkers. The multilocation group experienced more alcohol problems in their lives, had higher Mortimer-Filkins test sco

Developmental level as a predictor of alcoholism treatment response: an attempted replication.

Over 12 years ago, a developmental level (DL) cognitive measure derived from the Rorschach was found to be a powerful predictor of alcohol-related outcomes following behaviorally oriented inpatient alcoholism treatment. These findings represent the strongest evidence of a relationship between cognitive functioning and treatment response. The current pilot study attempted to determine whether the large effects previously obtained with the DL measure could be replicated. The Rorschach was administered during the first week of treatment to 20 male alcoholic patients attending 1-month day hospital…

Regional cerebral glucose utilization in chronic organic mental disorders associated with alcoholism.

Localized cerebral utilization rates for glucose (CMRglu) were determined in 10 detoxified patients with alcoholic organic mental disorders and in 7 age-equivalent normal volunteers using [18F]2-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography. Although gray and white matter CMRglu were not significantly different, normalized CMRglu was increased in the left cerebellar and parietal cortical regions and decreased in the right posterior white matter and anterior temporal regions of alcoholic patients, and the pattern of regional CMRglu differed between the two groups. The results suggest funct

Alcoholism, politics, and bureaucracy: the consensus against controlled-drinking therapy in America.

Controlled drinking has long been rejected as a therapeutic goal in traditional American alcoholism treatment. More striking has been the adoption of this position by behaviorists who once fostered controlled-drinking (CD) therapy, such as Peter Nathan, former director of the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies. This shift has occurred even while the evidence for rejecting the value of moderation training is unclear. Rather than being justified empirically, this rejection must instead be understood as a strategy behaviorists have used to jettison a politically explosive element in the behavioral…

[Salsolinol, an endogenous molecule. Possible implications in alcoholism, Parkinson's disease and pain].

Salsolinol can be formed either by condensation of dopamine with acetaldehyde, or by condensation of dopamine with pyruvic acid followed by decarboxylation. Salsolinol has a complex pharmacologic profile. Its opium-like activity may be related to alcohol dependency and to the effectiveness of naloxone during acute alcohol intoxication. Because they had noticed that alcoholism and Parkinson's disease rarely coexist, the authors undertook a study to confirm this fact and attempt to explain it by implicating salsolinol. Urinary excretion of salsolinol was found to increase following ingestion of …

Diagnosis of alcoholism in a simulated patient encounter by primary care physicians.

Although early detection and treatment of alcoholism have been shown to be efficacious, it is widely accepted that primary care physicians often fail to diagnose alcoholism. In this study, a computerized, simulated encounter with an alcoholic patient was used to assess the performance of a randomly selected sample of primary care physicians in diagnosing alcoholism. Of 95 physicians in this study, only 32 percent diagnosed alcoholism with maximal certainty. There was great variability among physicians in the threshold of information needed to diagnose alcoholism. One third of subjects misinter…

Thiamin in the elderly--relation to alcoholism and to neurological degenerative disease.

Status of thiamin in the elderly North American population is reviewed. Most Americans eat sufficient thiamin but about 5% of those over 60 yr old show impaired thiamin status. This is more marked in the poor, those confined in institutions, or those with illness. Thiamin responsive heart disease and Wernicke Korsakoff CNS syndromes occur in the elderly but there is no increased prevalence. Minor heart or neurological syndromes related to thiamin deficiency cannot be identified. The Recommended Dietary Allowance of thiamin provides at least 50% excess thiamin for those over 60 yr old--this amo

The B-vitamins in malnutrition with alcoholism. A model of intervitamin relationships.

1. The B-vitamin status of fifty-nine patients, mainly from the lower socio-economic classes in Bombay, with a history of chronic malnutrition, and of alcoholism of 1-5-20 years' duration, was studied before and during treatment, and in relation to their clinical, especially neurological, condition. These patients were divided into two neurological categories: (I) those with peripheral neuropathy (mainly sensory and distal) alone, (2) those with mental changes (mainly confusion and disorientation) also. Both categories frequently showed pellagrous pigmentation and mucocutaneous signs of B-vita…

The mirror transference in the psychoanalytic psychotherapy of alcoholism: a case report.

The development of a mirror transference in the successful outpatient psychoanalytic psychotherapy of an alcoholic patient is described in this paper. Important features of the case were a very severe initial period of resistance, a dramatic shift from a climate of bitterness and rancor to one of quiet and satisfaction that coincided with the establishment of the mirroring relationship, then recall of important genetic material, and finally, a period of many gains in the patient's contemporary relationships. Very few interpretations were given. The psychotherapy was chiefly an attempt to provi
