Agoraphobic and panic disorder patients underwent 1-mg Dexamethasone Suppression Tests (DST) before, during, and after an 8-week trial of diazepam, alprazolam, or placebo. Previously described, never-ill controls underwent similar testing. At baseline, 21 of 82 (25.6%) panic disorder and 5 of 38 (13.2%) controls were nonsuppressors. Muscle pain occurs in various neuromuscular disorders with characteristic physiological or biochemical abnormalities. The Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) was tested for reliability and validity in two different samples, one sample (n = 97) defined by anxiety disorders, the other sample (n = 101) defined by depressive disorders. Controlled clinical trials evaluating cognitive-behavioral approaches for panic disorder are rapidly accumulating. In the aggregate, these studies suggest substantial efficacy for cognitive-behavioral approaches in both the short and long term.
