Transient global amnesia is characterized by the sudden apparition of severe episodic amnesia, mainly anterograde, associated with emotional changes. Even though the symptoms are stereotyped, cerebral mechanism underlying transient global amnesia remains unexplained and previous studies using positron emission tomography do not show any clear results or consensus on cerebral regions impacted during transient global amnesia. This study included a group of 10 transient global amnesic patients who underwent 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography during the acute or recovery phase of

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a self-limiting neurological condition that temporarily affects patients' ability to access and store memories. So far, its etiology is unknown; however, ischemic origin has been discussed in the past. We present the case of a 61-year-old female with clinical appearance of TGA. MRI and duplex scan revealed punctiform and patchy ischemic lesions in both temporal lobes and right vertebral artery dissection, suggesting basilar artery embolism as the underlying cause. Our case report shows that TGA can be a symptom of ischemic lesions in the hippocampus and patien

Transient Global Amnesia (TGA) is an enigmatic amnestic syndrome. We conducted a systematic review to investigate the relationship between the conventional cardiovascular risk factors and TGA. MEDLINE, CENTRAL, EMBASE and PsycINFO were comprehensively searched and 23 controlled observational studies were retrieved. The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and smoking was lower among patients with TGA compared to Transient Ischemic Attack. Regarding the comparison of TGA with healthy individuals, there was strong evidence suggesting a protective effect of diabetes mellitu

OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence and characteristics of mesiotemporal diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) lesions in transient global amnesia (TGA), and to determine prevalence of "missed" DWI lesions on routine radiological reporting.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of patients with TGA admitted to a tertiary care hospital over ten years. Patients with TGA, who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain within one week of index event, were included in this study. MRI's were reviewed by two independent raters. Clinical data and other investigations were collated.
RESULTS:

Transient global amnesia is not rare, but its etiology remains unknown. Cerebral ischemia is a suspected cause because high signal intensity is observed on diffusion-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging; however, previous studies have not established it as a cause. Of the 128 patients (114 females) enrolled in this study, 82 (64.6%) experienced extreme stress before transient global amnesia. The number of female patients with patent foramen ovale was more than that of males. The patent foramen ovale-positive group had fewer vascular risk factors and fewer old ischemic lesions on fluid-att

Transient global amnesia (TGA) can be caused by medications, ischemia, metabolic abnormalities, and seizures. We describe two cases of TGA following coil embolization for a basilar-tip aneurysm. A 73-year-old woman developed transient acute anterograde amnesia after coil embolization for a basilar-tip aneurysm. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) revealed an ischemic lesion in the anterior nucleus of the thalamus. A 67-year-old woman developed transient acute amnesia after a stent-assisted coil embolization of a basilar-tip aneurysm. A DWI showed ischemic lesions in the anterior nucleus of the th

OBJECTIVE: To present the case of a collegiate pitcher with type I diabetes mellitus who developed transient global amnesia and to characterize the acute onset of symptoms and clinical diagnosis of this rarely reported neurologic condition in the student-athlete population.
BACKGROUND: A 21-year-old collegiate pitcher with type I diabetes mellitus was found by his roommate to have acute-onset memory loss. The athletic trainer identified normal blood glucose levels and normal vital signs but profound amnesia. The patient was evaluated by his team physician and referred to the local emergency d

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) is abnormal in patients who have Transient Global Amnesia (TGA).
METHODS: We obtained noninvasive rCBF measurements using Tc-99m-ethyl cysteinate diamer Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) in 7 patients diagnosed with TGA within 4 days of onset of the amnestic episode while the patients were still symptomatic and in 17 age-matched healthy control subjects. We assessed memory functioning using the Hopkins's Verbal Learning Test (HVLT) and Statistical Parametric Mapping to compare rCBF across di

Two cases of transient global amnesia (TGA) following coronary angiography are reported. Nonionic contrast media was used and injected at room temperature. Both cases showed sudden amnesia about 15 minutes after the left ventriculography. A clinical feature was typical to TGA, showing repeated questions with retrograde and antegrade memory disturbance without any other neurological abnormality. Diffusion-weighted images (DWI) of magnetic resonance imaging revealed no fresh lesion in both cases. The patients recovered from TGA attack within 24 hours. Some cases have been reported which display

We report on a patient with pure transient global amnesia (TGA) whose magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a small region of increased signal intensity in the right hippocampus on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). DWI was sensitive and useful for evaluating the early stage of TGA and might help to explain the pathophysiology of TGA.

OBJECTIVE: To study cognitive function and cerebral metabolic changes in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA).
METHODS: Three patients with TGA were given mini-mental state examination (MMSE), revised Wechsler memory scale (WMS-R) examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans after they had been diagnosed as TGA. Using (18)F labelled deoxyglucose as tracer, patients were given a positron emission tomography (PET) examination at different periods during recovery.
RESULTS: No obvious abnormality was found in MMSE and MRI scans in the three patients. However, WMS-R examination

Transient global amnesia is a clinical syndrome characterized by the sudden onset of anterograde amnesia, accompanied by repetitive questioning, sometimes with a retrograde component, lasting up to 24 hours, without compromise of other neurologic function. Neuroimaging after an acutetransient global amnesia event often shows transient perturbation of specific hippocampal circuits that are involved in memory processing. Critical clinical distinctions, such as between transient global amnesia and other forms of transient amnesic episodes, as well as important clues to the underlying pathophysiol

Acute perturbation of the corticohippocampal circuitry is a primary pathophysiological mechanism underlying transient global amnesia (TGA). With regard to memory, 2 distinct corticohippocampal circuitries potentially exist: the anterior temporal network and the posterior medial network. We used electroencephalography (EEG) spectral analysis to determine which network is disrupted during the acute stage of TGA. Patients with TGA who visited Seoul National University Bundang Hospital within 24 hours after symptom onset were retrospectively identified. Twenty patients underwent EEG twice, once in

Acute myocardial infarction may lead to several clinical manifestations and many times this diagnosis is missed. Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a well-defined clinical syndrome of unknown etiology. Several mechanisms have been proposed but only trigger events have been clearly associated with the attack. We describe a case of acute myocardial infarction manifestated by TGA.

This article reports the case of a high-functioning patient who had an "event" diagnosed as probable transient global amnesia (TGA) 1 year before being diagnosed with evolving cognitive impairment. Formal psychometric testing was necessary to make this diagnosis owing to the insensitivity of simple tests in this high-functioning individual. Neuropsychological evaluation showed impairment of short-term verbal memory, compounded by observed fluctuations in attention. In light of its reported benefits for cognitive function and attention, galantamine was administered starting at 4 mg b.i.d., then
