Neurochemical Anatomy of the Mammalian Carotid Body.

Carotid body (CB) glomus cells in most mammals, including humans, contain a broad diversity of classical neurotransmitters, neuropeptides and gaseous signaling molecules as well as their cognate receptors. Among them, acetylcholine, adenosine triphosphate and dopamine have been proposed to be the main excitatory transmitters in the mammalian CB, although subsequently dopamine has been considered an inhibitory neuromodulator in almost all mammalian species except the rabbit. In addition, co-existence of biogenic amines and neuropeptides has been reported in the glomus cells, thus suggesting tha

The functional anatomy of the foramina of Luschka revisited.

BACKGROUND: The German Anatomist Hubert Von Luschka first described the foramina of Luschka (FOL) in 1855 as lateral holes in the fourth ven … ed and Google Scholar databases to review the existing literature describing the history, pertinent anatomy, and function of FOL. In addition, we reviewed the original German book written by Luschka. RESULTS: While reading the available articles and original works regarding FOL, we noticed the developmental phases through which FOL was discovered, tracki …

[Anatomy of the left ventricle for endocardial ablation].

As with all cardiac interventions, performing left ventricular ablation requires profound knowledge of cardiac anatomy. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of left ventricular anatomy and to characterize complex and clinically relevant structures from an electrophysiologist-centered perspective. In addition to the different access routes, the trabecular network, the left ventricular outflow tract, and the left ventricular conduction system, complex anatomical structures such as the aortomitral continuity and the left ventricular summit are also explained. In addition, this articl…

Understanding Lymphatic Anatomy and Abnormalities at Imaging.

Lymphatic abnormalities encompass a wide range of disorders spanning solitary common cystic lymphatic malformations (LMs) to entities involving multiple organ systems such as lymphangioleiomyomatosis. Many of these disorders are rare, yet some, such as secondary lymphedema from the treatment of malignancy (radiation therapy and/or lymph node dissection), affect millions of patients worldwide. Owing to complex and variable anatomy, the lymphatics are not as well understood as other organ systems. Further complicating this is the variability in the description of lymphatic disease processes and …

A reappraisal of pediatric thoracic surface anatomy.

Accurate knowledge of surface anatomy is essential for physical examination, invasive procedures, and anatomy education. Individual factors such as age make surface landmarks variable so accurate descriptions are needed. The aim of this study is to describe age-related surface landmarks for intrathoracic structures in children. A total of 156 thoracic computed tomography scans of children aged 0-18 years were categorized into six groups, and the associations between major intrathoracic structures and surface landmarks were analyzed. Sternal angle is an accurate surface landmark for the azygos …

Cerebral venous anatomy: implications for the neurointerventionalist.

Meaningful contributions to neurointerventional practice may be possible by considering the dynamic aspects of angiography in addition to fixed morphologic information. The functional approach to venous anatomy requires integration of the traditional static anatomic features of the system-deep, superficial, posterior fossa, medullary veins, venous sinuses, and outflow routes into an overall appreciation of how a classic model of drainage is altered, embryologically, or pathologically, depending on patterns of flow-visualization made possible by angiography. In this review, emphasis is placed o…

Anatomy, Biomechanics, and Loads of the Wrist Joint.

The wrist is by far the most differentiated section of the musculoskeletal system. The spectrum of wrist injuries ranges from minor injuries to complex traumas with simultaneous loss of functions, resulting in enormous economic costs. A proper understanding of the anatomy and biomechanics is essential for effective treatment, whether conservative or surgical; this applies to the wrist no less than to other parts of the human body. Here; information on the wrist anatomy; kinematics; and biomechanical behavior is presented, commencing with a brief explanation of the structure of its hard and sof…

Anatomy and embryology of abdominal wall defects.

Abdominal wall defects are one of the most frequently encountered human congenital anomalies. They are seen in as many as 1 in 2,000 live births with evidence to suggest that their incidence is increasing. While often discussed together abdominal wall defects consist mainly of two entities namely gastroschisis and omphalocele. There are marked differences in their theories of embryo-pathogenesis, clinical presentation/anatomy and overall outcomes. There is no clear consensus explaining the precise embryological mechanisms leading to the development of abdominal wall defects. Many clinicians an…

The Development of the Mesenteric Model of Abdominal Anatomy.

Recent advances in mesenteric anatomy have clarified the shape of the mesentery in adulthood. A key finding is the recognition of mesenteric continuity, which extends from the oesophagogastric junction to the mesorectal level. All abdominal digestive organs develop within, or on, the mesentery and in adulthood remain directly connected to the mesentery. Identification of mesenteric continuity has enabled division of the abdomen into two separate compartments. These are the mesenteric domain (upon which the abdominal digestive system is centered) and the non-mesenteric domain, which comprises t…

CLEAR - Anatomy and physiology of the anterior eye.

A key element of contact lens practice involves clinical evaluation of anterior eye health, including the cornea and limbus, conjunctiva and sclera, eyelids and eyelashes, lacrimal system and tear film. This report reviews the fundamental anatomy and physiology of these structures, including the vascular supply, venous drainage, lymphatic drainage, sensory innervation, physiology and function. This is the foundation for considering the potential interactions with, and effects of, contact lens wear on the anterior eye. This information is not consistently published as academic research and this…

Anatomy and Applied Physiology of the Pleural Space.

The unique anatomy and physiology of the pleural space provides tight regulation of liquid within the space under normal physiologic conditions. When this balance is disrupted and pleural effusions develop, there can be significant impacts on the respiratory system. Drainage of effusions can lead to meaningful improvement in symptoms, primarily owing to improvement in the length-tension relationship of the respiratory muscles. Ultrasound examination to evaluate the movement and function of the diaphragm, as well as pleural manometry, have provided a greater understanding of the impact of pleur…

Multimodality Imaging of the Anatomy of the Aortic Root.

The aortic root has long been considered an inert unidirectional conduit between the left ventricle and the ascending aorta. In the classical definition, the aortic valve leaflets (similar to what is perceived for the atrioventricular valves) have also been considered inactive structures, and their motion was thought to be entirely passive-just driven by the fluctuations of ventricular-aortic gradients. It was not until the advent of aortic valve-sparing surgery and of transcatheter aortic valve implantation that the interest on the anatomy of the aortic root again took momentum. These new pro…

Unilateral aberrant anatomy of the hypoglossal nerve.

PURPOSE: Neck dissection is often performed in patients with oral cancer to both treat and reduce the risk of subsequent neck metastases. Injury to the hypoglossal nerve may result in dysarthria, dysphagia, and profound difficulty with upper airway control. Although surgical landmarks facilitate intra-operative identification of vital structures to be preserved, they should not be an absolute measure, due to anatomical variants. We present a rare case of unilateral aberrant anatomy of the hypoglossal nerve, passing superficial to the internal jugular vein. METHODS: A 70-year-old female presen…

Anatomy of the posterolateral spinal epidural ligaments.

BACKGROUND: The epidural ligaments (ELs) (of Hofmann) were described as fibrous bands interconnecting the ventrolateral spinal dura and the posterior longitudinal ligament below L1. They are hardly ever discussed in the literature or considered in hypothesis-driven basic science experiments or spine biomechanical models. METHODS: Intraoperative photographs were obtained to illustrate a group of posterolateral spinal ELs. In addition, electronic database searches (PubMed, Ovid Embase, and SCOPUS) were utilized to summarize the anatomy, and relevant clinical and surgical factors impacting these…
