Comparing mouse and human cingulate cortex organization using functional connectivity.

The subdivisions of the extended cingulate cortex of the human brain are implicated in a number of high-level behaviors and affected by a range of neuropsychiatric disorders. Its anatomy, function, and response to therapeutics are often studied using non-human animals, including the mouse. However, the similarity of human and mouse frontal cortex, including cingulate areas, is still not fully understood. Some accounts emphasize resemblances between mouse cingulate cortex and human cingulate cortex while others emphasize similarities with human granular prefrontal cortex. We use comparative neu

Comprehensive Postnatal Anatomical, Histological and Geometric Morphometric Analysis of Thymus Development in Dromedary Camels (Camelus dromedarius).

The thymus, a primary lymphoid organ, plays a critical role in T lymphocyte development and adaptive immunity. This study focuses on the anatomical, histological and geometric morphometric characteristics of the thymus in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) during postnatal development. Thymus samples were collected from camels aged approximately 4, 8, 12 and 16 months. Using photogrammetry and 3D modelling, the samples were analysed to generate landmarks and conduct geometric morphometry with the 3D Slicer and ALPACA algorithm. Principal component analysis (PCA) was then performed to evalu

No Difference in Reintervention at 1-Year Between Ultrasound-Guided versus Blind Dorsal Carpal Ganglion Aspiration.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective comparative study was to compare the efficacy of dorsal carpal ganglion aspiration in patients who underwent either "blind" (using surface anatomy alone) or ultrasound-guided (US-guided) aspiration. METHODS: Outcome measures were conducted during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic via telephone for a minimum of 12 months after aspiration, with efficacy defined by reintervention with either repeat aspiration or surgical excision. RESULTS: Data are reported for 141 patients (46 blind; 95 US-guided) at an average of 28 months (range, 12-55 months) f

Vagally Mediated Gut-Brain Relationships in Appetite Control-Insights from Porcine Studies.

Signals arising from the upper part of the gut are essential for the regulation of food intake, particularly satiation. This information is supplied to the brain partly by vagal nervous afferents. The porcine model, because of its sizeable gyrencephalic brain, omnivorous regimen, and comparative anatomy of the proximal part of the gut to that of humans, has provided several important insights relating to the relevance of vagally mediated gut-brain relationships to the regulation of food intake. Furthermore, its large size combined with the capacity to become obese while overeating a western di

Paracoccygeal Transsacral Approach: A Rare Approach for Axial Lumbosacral Interbody Fusion.

Lumbosacral interbody fusion is a mainstay of surgical treatment for degenerative spinal pathologies causing chronic pain and functional impairment. However, the optimal technique for this procedure remains controversial. Well-established open approaches, including anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF), and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), have historically been the standard of practice. A recent paradigm shift in spinal surgery has led to the investigation of minimally invasive approaches to mitigate tissue damage without compromising

Craniofacial skeleton of MEXICAN tetra (Astyanax mexicanus): As a bone disease model.

A small fresh water fish, the Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus) is a novel animal model in evolutionary developmental biology. The existence of morphologically distinct surface and cave morphs of this species allows simultaneous comparative analysis of phenotypic changes at different life stages. The cavefish harbors many favorable constructive traits (i.e., large jaws with an increased number of teeth, neuromast cells, enlarged olfactory pits and excess storage of adipose tissues) and regressive traits (i.e., reduced eye structures and pigmentation) which are essential for cave adaptation. A

Exercises in Anatomy, Connectivity, and Morphology using Neuromorpho.org and the Allen Brain Atlas.

Laboratory instruction of neuroscience is often limited by the lack of physical resources and supplies (e.g., brains specimens, dissection kits, physiological equipment). Online databases can serve as supplements to material labs by providing professionally collected images of brain specimens and their underlying cellular populations with resolution and quality that is extremely difficult to access for strictly pedagogical purposes. We describe a method using two online databases, the Neuromorpho.org and the Allen Brain Atlas (ABA), that freely provide access to data from working brain scienti

Dyslexia diagnostics by 3-D shape analysis of the corpus callosum.

Dyslexia severely impairs learning abilities; therefore, improved diagnostic methods are needed. Neuropathological studies have revealed an abnormal anatomy of the corpus callosum (CC) in dyslexic brains. We propose a new approach for the quantitative analysis of 3-D magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the brain that ensures a more accurate quantification of anatomical differences between the CC of dyslexic and control subjects. The proposed approach consists of three main processing steps: 1) segmenting the CC from a given 3-D MRI using the learned CC shape and visual appearance; 2) extracting

Disparity and convergence in bipedal archosaur locomotion.

This study aims to investigate functional disparity in the locomotor apparatus of bipedal archosaurs. We use reconstructions of hindlimb myology of extant and extinct archosaurs to generate musculoskeletal biomechanical models to test hypothesized convergence between bipedal crocodile-line archosaurs and dinosaurs. Quantitative comparison of muscle leverage supports the inference that bipedal crocodile-line archosaurs and non-avian theropods had highly convergent hindlimb myology, suggesting similar muscular mechanics and neuromuscular control of locomotion. While these groups independently ev

Temporomandibular joint: disorders, treatments, and biomechanics.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex, sensitive, and highly mobile joint. Millions of people suffer from temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in USA alone. The TMD treatment options need to be looked at more fully to assess possible improvement of the available options and introduction of novel techniques. As reconstruction with either partial or total joint prosthesis is the potential treatment option in certain TMD conditions, it is essential to study outcomes of the FDA approved TMJ implants in a controlled comparative manner. Evaluating the kinetics and kinematics of the TMJ enables the

Prenatal diagnosis of monosomy 1p36: a focus on brain abnormalities and a review of the literature.

Monosomy 1p36 is an increasingly recognized chromosomal anomaly. We describe two patients with monosomy 1p36 who had brain abnormalities detected on prenatal ultrasound. The first patient was ascertained prenatally with ultrasound abnormalities, including ventriculomegaly, a single umbilical artery, a unilateral club foot, a ventricular septal defect, and intra-uterine growth retardation. Amniocentesis showed a normal karyotype. A postnatal MRI showed moderate to severe non-obstructive hydrocephalus, bilateral colpocephaly, and abnormal myelination of the anterior limb of the internal capsule.

Differences in baseline characteristics and in-hospital outcomes in patients with or without prior stroke undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is increasingly used in patients with high-risk baseline characteristics. A prior stroke may identify patients who have a higher risk for post-PCI complications. However, no comparative data exist on post-PCI outcomes of patients with or without prior stroke. METHODS: Review of a PCI database of 9,088 consecutive PCIs from July 1997 to December 2002 identified 812 PCIs in patients with a history of prior stroke and 8,044 PCIs without prior stroke. RESULTS: Patients with prior stroke had high-risk baseline characteristics [diabetes, hyperte

Pathogenesis of pancreatic infection.

John Hunter studied comparative anatomy of the pancreas but was unaware of pancreatic infection which is now the leading cause of mortality in pancreatitis. This was investigated using a feline model of pancreatitis. Pathogens spread to the healthy and inflamed gland from many sources including colon, gallbladder, or a septic focus and by various routes including the circulation, reflux into the pancreatic duct or by transmural migration from the colon. Colonisation risk was proportional to necrosis and inflammation, confirming clinical observations. These studies showed that pathogens frequen

Sphenoidal artery, ramus orbitalis persistens and pterygospinosus muscle--a unique cooccurrence of first branchial arch anomalies in man.

In a 76-year-old Caucasian male, the right middle meningeal was replaced by a branch of the ipsilateral ophthalmic artery (O), i.e. the sphenoidal artery (S); the right foramen spinosum was found to be absent. In the orbit, the right O bifurcated into a medial (merely orbital) and a lateral division, i.e. a meningolacrimal trunk. From that trunk, the S branched off and entered the middle cranial fossa at the superolateral angle of the superior orbital fissure. In addition, an anastomotic channel was formed by a remnant of the ramus orbitalis, connecting the right infraorbital with the deep orb

[Etiology and therapy of rectal prolapse. Experiences with 308 cases 1956-1991].

The cause of a prolapse of the rectum is intrinsic to the organ itself. Neither paralysis of the pelvic floor sphincter complex nor a loosening of the suspending ligaments--which have never been demonstrated in situ--are causative. Determining for the development of a prolapse of the rectum is the break in calibre between the very tight pelvic colon and the wide rectal reservoir. Radiologically we can prove that it is here, where the genesis of prolapse development starts. In comparative anatomy the rectal ampulla is equivalent to the cloaca. Its stable transverse folds (rugae) are reminiscent

Neuroradiologic investigation of the visual system using magnetic resonance imaging.

The aim of this review is to give highlights about technical imaging aspects with which researchers in the neuro-ophthalmologic fields ought to be familiar. After a short overview of history of anatomy of the visual system, a review of the main anatomic details and their corresponding MRI aspects concerning the visual pathways is proposed. Reference lines suitable for MR imaging of the visual system in normal and in diseased states are proposed to orient the neuroradio-ophthalmologic investigations. Brain, cutaneous, and bony landmarks are given to help multimodality imaging approaches, indisp

The developmental field concept in clinical genetics.

Fields are those parts of the embryo in which the processes of development of complex structure appropriate to those parts are controlled and coordinated in a spatially ordered, temporally synchronized, and epimorphically hierarchical manner. Disturbances of field development may be corrected or may lead to anomalies of abnormal or incomplete differentiation. Powerful evidence for the existence of developmental fields comes from the observation of identical malformations resulting from two or more different causes; this identifies groups of embryonic structures that respond as a single develop
