Meridional Attentional Asymmetries in Astigmatic Eyes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of attention orientation in young myopic adults with astigmatism. METHODS: The effect of attention on foveal meridional performance and anisotropy was measured in corrected myopes with various levels of astigmatism (with-the-rule astigmatism ≤ -0.75D, Axis: 180 ± 20) using orientation-based attention. Attention was manipulated by instructing subjects to attend to either the horizontal or the vertical line of a central pre-stimulus (a pulsed cross) along separate blocks of trials. For each attention condition, meridional acuity and reaction times were measure…

Twist Engineering of Anisotropic Excitonic and Optical Properties of a Two-Dimensional Magnetic Semiconductor.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic semiconductors are a new class of quantum materials for studying the emergent physics of excitons and spins in the 2D limit. Twist engineering provides a powerful tool to manipulate the fundamental properties of 2D vdW materials. Here, we show that twist engineering of the anisotropic ferromagnetic monolayer semiconductor CrSBr leads to bilayer magnetic semiconductors with continuously tunable magnetic moment, dielectric anisotropy, exciton energy, and linear dichroism. We furthermore provide a model for exciton energy in the media with tunable…

(31)P magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy for probing local environments in paramagnetic europium-substituted wells-dawson polyoxotungstates.

A series of europium-substituted Wells-Dawson polyoxotungstates were addressed by 31P magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy. The electron-nuclear dipolar interaction dominates the 31P spinning-sideband envelopes. The experimental electron-nuclear dipolar anisotropies were found to be in good agreement with those calculated based on the known crystallographic coordinates and effective magnetic moments and assuming a point-dipole approximation. These electron-nuclear dipolar anisotropies directly report on the anion stoichiometry and on the positional isomerism, indicating that 31P MAS NMR

The effect of maternal ethanol intoxication on erythrocyte ghost fluidity in new-born rat pups.

We administered ethanol to pregnant rats and determined cholesterol, lipid phosphorus and fluorescence anisotropy of diphenylhexatriene (DPH) and of trimethylaminophenyl hexatriene (TMA-DPH) in erythrocyte ghosts of newborn pups and of their mothers. Cholesterol content was different in dams and pups and changed after treatment. Age, but not ethanol, affected lipid phosphorus. Either age (dams versus pups) or treatment affected the curves of DPH fluorescence anisotropy (r) versus temperature (T), but those of TMA-DPH did not change, indicating that only the inner core of the membrane was influ…

Early Prediction of Delayed Ischemia and Functional Outcome in Acute Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Role of Diffusion Tensor Imaging.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters are markers of cerebral lesion in some diseases. In patients with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), we investigated whether DTI parameters measured at <72 hours might be associated with delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) and with poor functional outcome at 3 months (modified Rankin Scale score ≥3). METHODS: DTI was performed in a prospective cohort of 60 patients with nontraumatic SAH at <72 hours. Association of fractional anisotropy and apparent diffusion coefficient values at <72 hours with the occurrence of DCI and outcome …

Altered cerebellar feedback projections in Asperger syndrome.

It has been proposed that the biological basis of autism spectrum disorder includes cerebellar 'disconnection'. However, direct in vivo evidence in support of this is lacking. Here, the microstructural integrity of cerebellar white matter in adults with Asperger syndrome was studied using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance tractography. Fifteen adults with Asperger syndrome and 16 age-IQ-gender-matched healthy controls underwent diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging. For each subject, tract-specific measurements of mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy were made within the inferior…

White matter development during childhood and adolescence: a cross-sectional diffusion tensor imaging study.

Maturation of brain white matter pathways is an important factor in cognitive, behavioral, emotional and motor development during childhood and adolescence. In this study, we investigate white matter maturation as reflected by changes in anisotropy and white matter density with age. Thirty-four children and adolescents aged 6-19 years received diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans. Among these, 30 children and adolescents also received high-resolution T1-weighed anatomical scans. A linear regression model was used to correlate fractional anisotropy (FA) values with age on a voxel…

Strongly axial monodentate carboxylate for dysprosium single-ion magnets.

Recent breakthroughs in air-sensitive axial ligands have catalysed the development of high-performance dysprosium-based single-molecule magnets (Dy-SMMs) with exceptional magnetic blocking behaviour. However, air-stable axial ligands remain largely confined to phosphine oxides, phenols, and silanols. Carboxylates, despite being fundamental to early SMM chemistry, typically adopt bidentate coordination modes that usually weaken the magnetic anisotropy, thus limiting their utility as axial ligands. Herein, we report a highly anisotropic Dy-SMM featuring a monodentate carboxylate as the axial lig…

Microstructural white matter abnormalities in patients with COL6A3 mutations (DYT27 dystonia).

INTRODUCTION: Recently, mutations in the collagen gene COL6A3 have been reported in patients with autosomal-recessive, isolated dystonia (DYT27). Zebrafish models of COL6A3 mutations showed deficits in axonal targeting mechanisms. Therefore, COL6A3 mutations have been considered to contribute to irregular sensorimotor circuit formation. To test this hypothesis, we examined structural abnormalities in cerebral fiber tracts of dystonia patients with COL6A3 mutations using diffusion tensor imaging. METHODS: We performed a voxel-wise statistical analysis to compare fractional anisotropy within wh…
