[Immunogenic effect of anthrax protective antigen].

In experimental immunization of sheep and goats against anthrax the vaccine containing our own protective antigen (PA) whose serological activity was evaluated by the titre 1:16 was used. PA was adsorbed on aluminium hydroxide gel at the ratio 30 parts of gel and 100 parts of antigen. In the control experiment the doses of the virulent anthrax strain were as follows: 10(6) (sheep) and 5.10(6) (goats). The single vaccination provided only 60% protection, the repeated 100% protection. By the titration of antibodies of the vaccinated animals was proved that the peak titres (1:80 to 1:160) were re…

Anthrax epizootic in white-tailed deer.

Bacillus anthracis caused high mortality among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on Beulah Island, Desha County, Arkansas. Sixty-seven carcasses were located and the total loss was estimated between 200 and 300 deer. Range conditions indicated that the deer herd had greatly exceeded carrying capacity. Lesions in deer were similar to those ascribed to anthrax in domestic cattle, sheep, and goats.

Cutaneous anthrax--the non-industrial hazard.

Two patients contracted cutaneous anthrax after contact with infected bone meal. Awareness of the risk of infection from this source may help in achieving early clinical diagnosis and a low fatality rate following effective antibiotic therapy.

Pulmonary anthrax caused by contaminated sacks.

A 54-year-old Jamaican employed as a grinding machine operator developed pulmonary anthrax and died within two days. In the eight days before his illness he had been grinding sterilized bone charcoal delivered in second-hand sacks, some of which had been used to import the raw bone before its sterilization. Bacillus anthracis was isolated from four out of six sacks examined and is considered to have been the source of the infection.

QUANTITATIVE ASSAY FOR CRUDE ANTHRAX TOXINS.

Haines, Bertram W. (U.S. Army Biological Laboratories, Frederick, Md.), Frederick Klein, and Ralph E. Lincoln. Quantitative assay for crude anthrax toxins. J. Bacteriol. 89:74-83. 1965.-The whole crude toxins of Bacillus anthracis, although apparently responsible for the death of animals with anthrax, had never been quantitated. A total of 14 lots of the toxic culture filtrate of B. anthracis were pooled into one large lot of crude anthrax toxins. An extensive assay of this reference material was conducted in four laboratories by use of the time-to-death of the intravenously challenged Fischer…

Anthrax: Transmission, Pathogenesis, Prevention and Treatment.

Bacillus anthracis is a deadly pathogen that under unfavourable conditions forms highly resistant spores which enable them to survive for a long period of time. Spores of B. anthracis are transmitted through the contaminated soil or animal products and enter to the host through the skin, lungs or oral route and can cause cutaneous, injection, inhalation and gastrointestinal anthrax, respectively. The disease is caused by the toxin which is produced by them once they germinate within the host cell. Anthrax toxin is the major virulence factor which has the ability to kill the host cell. The role…

Suspected cutaneous anthrax in rural areas.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous anthrax (CA), a zoonotic infectious disease is an important endemic public health disease in rural areas around the world, accounting for 95% of anthrax cases. METHODOLOGY: Fifty patients with CA were diagnosed by the presence of characteristic skin lesions and positive response to treatment. Twenty-nine patients had been treated with oral ciprofloxacin or doxycyclin for 14 days and 21 patients had been treated with intramuscular procaine penicillin for 7 days. The demographic risk factors, characteristics and treatment of CA in rural areas were evaluated. The response…

Treating Anthrax-Induced Meningitis in Rabbits.

Treatment of anthrax is challenging, especially during the advanced stages of the disease. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its recommendations for postexposure prophylaxis and treatment of exposed populations (before and after symptom onset). These recommendations distinguished, for the first time, between systemic disease with and without meningitis, a common and serious complication of anthrax. The CDC considers all systemic cases meningeal unless positively proven otherwise. The treatment of patients suffering from systemic anthrax with suspected or co…

Heroin-associated anthrax with minimal morbidity.

In 2010, during an outbreak of anthrax affecting people who inject drugs, a heroin user aged 37 years presented with soft tissue infection. He subsequently was found to have anthrax. We describe his management and the difficulty in distinguishing anthrax from non-anthrax lesions. His full recovery, despite an overall mortality of 30% for injectional anthrax, demonstrates that some heroin-related anthrax cases can be managed predominately with oral antibiotics and minimal surgical intervention.

Unexpected Relations of Historical Anthrax Strain.

In 1998, it was claimed that an 80-year-old glass tube intentionally filled with Bacillus anthracis and embedded in a sugar lump as a WWI biological weapon still contained viable spores. Today, genome sequencing of three colonies isolated in 1998 and subjected to phylogenetic analysis surprisingly identified a well-known B. anthracis reference strain isolated in the United States in 1981, pointing to accidental laboratory contamination.IMPORTANCE Next-generation sequencing and subsequent phylogenetic analyses are useful and reliable tools for the classification of recent and historical samples

New insights into gastrointestinal anthrax infection.

Bacterial infections are the primary cause of gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in both developing and developed countries, and are particularly dangerous for infants and children. Bacillus anthracis is the 'archetype zoonotic' pathogen; no other infectious disease affects such a broad range of species, including humans. Importantly, there are more case reports of GI anthrax infection in children than inhalational disease. Early diagnosis is difficult and widespread systemic disease develops rapidly. This review highlights new findings concerning the roles of the gut epithelia, commensal microbi…

Three eyelid localized cutaneous anthrax cases.

Anthrax is primarily seen in the developing countries, but it can be a worldwide medical concern due to bioterrorism threats. Palpebral anthrax is a rare form of cutaneous anthrax. Untreated cutaneous anthrax can be lethal. Patients with palpebral anthrax can develop complications including cicatrisation and ectropion. Thus, anthrax should be considered in differential diagnosis for patients presenting with preseptal cellulitis in high-risk regions. Herein, we report three anthrax cases (with different age) involving eyelids that were cured without any complications due to early diagnosis and …

Unusual cause of fatal anthrax meningitis.

We report the case of fatal anthrax meningoencephalitis in the province of Muş located in eastern Anatolia, Turkey. The organism isolated from cerebrospinal fluid was identified as Bacillus anthracis. The patient was treated with crystallized penicillin G (24 MU/day IV) and ciprofloxacin (2 × 400/day IV), but died 5 days after hospitalization. Although it is a rare case, we consider that the patients who have skin, respiratory and neurological systems might also have hemorrhagic meningitis.

Anthrax outbreaks in Bangladesh, 2009-2010.

During August 2009-October 2010, a multidisciplinary team investigated 14 outbreaks of animal and human anthrax in Bangladesh to identify the etiology, pathway of transmission, and social, behavioral, and cultural factors that led to these outbreaks. The team identified 140 animal cases of anthrax and 273 human cases of cutaneous anthrax. Ninety one percent of persons in whom cutaneous anthrax developed had history of butchering sick animals, handling raw meat, contact with animal skin, or were present at slaughtering sites. Each year, Bacillus anthracis of identical genotypes were isolated fr…
