Excessive weight gain is directly related to a positive energy balance which is due to both a decreased physical activity and overeating. Obesity prevalence is increasing since thirty years and the treatment of obesities is particularly necessary to solve this public health and economical problem. The receptors of numerous hypothalamic neuropeptides are potential targets for such drug treatments. Hormones of the gastro-intestinal tract or produced by the adipose tissue directly interact with these central pathways to regulate feeding behavior. The use of leptin, an adipose tissue hormone that

With obesity reaching epidemic proportions in the United States, it is imperative that hepatologists have an understanding of the medical ramifications and methods of treatment. Evaluation of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease may get the patient into the office, but weight reduction may provide a therapeutic hurdle. This article provides an overview of current obesity treatment.

Field trials evaluating selected commercially available mosquito traps variously baited with light, carbon dioxide, and/or octenol were conducted from 18-27 September 2000 in a malarious area near Paekyeon-ri (Tongil-Chon) and Camp Greaves in Paju County, Kyonggi Province, Republic of Korea. The host-seeking activity for common mosquito species, including the primary vector of Japanese encephalitis, Culex tritaeniorhynchus Giles, was determined using hourly aspirator collections from a human and propane lantern-baited Shannon trap during hours when temperatures exceeded 15 degrees C. The total

The need to treat obesity successfully can be measured by the medical penalty paid by the obese individual and the financial price paid by society in general. The management of obesity has 2 objectives: first, to produce significant weight reduction (10% of pretreatment bodyweight) and, second, to maintain this weight reduction. For the purpose of this paper, we have defined successful treatment as that maintaining significant weight loss for at least 5 years. A review of the literature confirms that there is no single outstanding treatment for obesity, and that clinicians must consider an ind

The anorectic action of systemically administered 5-HT (1, 2 and 4 mg/kg SC) was investigated in food deprived rats using the technique of microstructural analysis; small food pellets were delivered to a food hopper, and the time and occurrence of each pellet removal was recorded. Log-survivor analysis of inter-pellet intervals was used to define feeding bouts, and this was then used to compute measures of bout frequency, bout size, bout duration and eating rate. The 5-HT reduced food intake by selectively decreasing bout size and bout duration. No effects of 5-HT were observed on any of the o

The central glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) system encompasses homeostatic and hedonic neural circuits. GLP-1-producing neurons within the brainstem project broadly to GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R)-containing brainstem, hypothalamic, limbic, and mesolimbic nuclei. The diverse expression of the GLP-1R throughout metabolic and reward nuclei positions this system to integrate motivated behavior with physiological state. GLP-1 acts as a state-dependent behavior-ending signal that suppresses appetite, promotes satiety, and dampens hedonic and motivational reward value-effects that extend beyond palatable

As an important part of the limbic system of the forebrain, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) plays a key role in stress response, emotion regulation, and motivational behavior. Recent studies have demonstrated that BNST plays a crucial role in the pathological process of appetite regulation, food selection, and eating disorders by integrating metabolic signals, reward feedback, and stress input. This article systematically reviews the anatomical subdivision, neural loop characteristics, and multimodal mechanisms of the BNST in food intake regulation; discusses its association wit

The hypothalamus is widely recognized as one of the most extensively studied brain regions involved in the central regulation of energy homeostasis. Within the hypothalamus, peptidergic neurons play a crucial role in monitoring peripheral concentrations of metabolites and hormones, and they finely adjust the sensing of these factors, leading to the activation of either anorexigenic (appetite-suppressing) or orexigenic (appetite-stimulating) pathways. While cortical innervation of the hypothalamus does influence these processes, it is generally considered of secondary importance. Eating-related

This article reviews the previous studies on the distinction between food cravings and appetite, and how they are regulated by hormones and reflected in brain activity. Based on existing research, food cravings are defined as individual preferences influenced by hormones and psychological factors, which differ from appetite, as they are not necessarily related to hunger or nutritional needs. The article also evaluates the neuroimaging findings about food cravings, and interventions to reduce food cravings, such as mindfulness training, alternative sweeteners, non-invasive brain stimulation tec

With the advancement of microbiome research, the requirement to consider the intestinal microbiome as the "last organ" of an animal emerged. Through the production of metabolites and/or the stimulation of the host's hormone and neurotransmitter synthesis, the gut microbiota can potentially affect the host's eating behavior both long and short-term. Based on current evidence, the major mediators appear to be short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), peptide hormones such as peptide YY (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), as well as the amino acid tryptophan with the associated neurotransmitter sero

OBJECTIVE: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are effective medications to reduce appetite and body weight. These actions are centrally mediated; however, the neuronal substrates involved are poorly understood.
METHODS: We employed a combination of neuroanatomical, genetic, and behavioral approaches in the mouse to investigate the involvement of caudal brainstem cholecystokinin-expressing neurons in the effect of the GLP-1RA exendin-4. We further confirmed key neuroanatomical findings in the non-human primate brain.
RESULTS: We found that cholecystokinin-expressing neurons

The physical distance between presynaptic Ca2+ channels and the Ca2+ sensors triggering the release of neurotransmitter-containing vesicles regulates short-term plasticity (STP). While STP is highly diversified across synapse types, the computational and behavioral relevance of this diversity remains unclear. In the Drosophila brain, at nanoscale level, we can distinguish distinct coupling distances between Ca2+ channels and the (m)unc13 family priming factors, Unc13A and Unc13B. Importantly, coupling distance defines release components with distinct STP characteristics. Here, we show that whi

BACKGROUND: A detailed comprehension of central mechanisms underlying feeding behavior holds considerable promise for the treatment of alimentary disorders.
METHODS: In order to elucidate the tight interrelationships occurring at the hypothalamic neuronal endings between aminergic neurotransmitters and co-localized appetite modulators, we initially studied the effects of two anorexigenic peptides structurally related to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH, 1), namely cyclo(His-Pro) (CHP, 2) and pGlu-His-Gly-OH (3), on [(3)H]-norepinephrine and [(3)H]-dopamine release from perfused rat hypothal

BACKGROUND: Political instability and armed conflict impose substantial psychological and behavioral challenges on young adults. University students may experience heightened anxiety alongside disruptions in eating behaviors (EB) and physical activity (PA) during periods of active conflict. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the associations between anxiety, EB, PA and conflict-related strain among Lebanese university students exposed to war-induced stressors, and to identify the main factors associated with anxiety. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 401 students (mean a

BACKGROUND: Caffeine is frequently added to dietary supplements with claims it facilitates weight loss.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that caffeine administration reduces laboratory and free-living food intake by reducing appetite and that these effects vary by body mass index (BMI).
PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Fifty adults aged 18 to 50 years completed the study (42% male). Exclusion criteria included no previous experience with caffeine, previous adverse event following caffeine consumption, taking any medications or having a medical condition contraindicating c

The 1,4 addition of p-chlorophenylmagnesium bromide to 2-benzylidene-3-quinuclidinone gave 2-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)-3-quinuclidinone as two diastereoisomers. Selective reduction of this ketone with aluminum isopropoxide gave the two cis-2-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)-3-quinuclidinols, which differ only in the configuration of the benzhydryl group, designated alpha and beta in order of their elution on chromatography. Reduction with NaBH4 gave a mixture of four isomeric alcohols, of which the two cis isomers were selectively oxidized. The two trans-2-(4-chlorobenzhydryl)-3-quinuclidinols were chromatogra

To understand the behavioral consequences of intermittent anticipatory stress resulting from threats without accompanying physiological challenges, we developed a semi-naturalistic rodent housing and foraging environment that can include threats that are unpredictable in timing. Behavior is automatically recorded while rats forage for food or water. Over three weeks, the threats have been shown to elicit risk assessment behaviors, increase defensive burying and increase adrenal gland weight. To identify brain regions activated by this manipulation, we measured cytochrome c oxidase (COX), which
