The purpose of this study was to clarify the mental health needs of Iraqi immigrants who arrived in the United States in the 1990s after the Persian Gulf War. The records of 375 clients were examined at a clinic that serves Arab Americans. More posttraumatic stress disorder and health problems were found in Iraqi refugees than in other clients. Results suggest the need for further research on immigrants with traumatic histories to facilitate effective treatments.

AIM: This study aimed at establishing the mental health profile among 322 Arab children living in the Gaza strip.
METHOD: Children were selected in four age bands, i.e. 3, 6, 11 and 16 years of age. The relevant forms of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was completed by parents, teachers and 16-year-olds.

The management of esophageal atresia (EA) and tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) has improved markedly over the years, with a current overall survival of 80%-90%. This however, is not the case in developing countries, where mortality continues to be high. Ankylosing spondylitis is a rather uncommon condition in the UAE. Over a period of 10 years. 28 hospital-based patients diagnosed as having AS were retrospectively studied. They included 17 Arabs and 11 Asians. The onset of AS in most patients in this study was in adulthood (mean age at onset was 27.7 years in Arabs and 28.75 years in Asians). HLA B27 was positive in 56 and 81% in these two populations, respectively (P > 0.05). A replication of an American study of body shape preference was conducted in a group of 218 Arab students attending the American University in Cairo, Egypt. Arab female students felt their ideal shape to be significantly thinner than their current shape, while male students did not. We report an Arab Bedouin family including four males with uterine hernia syndrome. All had a male chromosome constitution and phenotype, inguinal herniae, cryptochidism, and persistence of Müllerian derivatives. Histopathological studies confirmed the presence of both testicular tissue and Müllerian derivatives. The presence of two affected brothers and two affected maternal uncles suggests X-linked inheritance. Autosomal recessive determination with male sex limitation is also a possibility based on parental consanguinity in one sibship.

Benzisothiazolin-3-one is a preservative widely used in industry. The manufacturer states that it is a known skin irritant and sensitiser, but these facts are not well-known. A case is described of contact allergy in a lithoprinter caused by it when used as a preservative in gum arabic. The literature is reviewed and a suitable patch-test concentration is suggested. It should be included in the patch-test battery for lithoprinters.

ABO and Rh blood groups among 54 syphilitics were determined. A significantly increased incidence of syphilis in persons blood groups B and AB was observed; significant decrease in those having groups A and 0. A significant decrease in, the incidence of syphilis was also observed in Rh negative 'subjects. These results suggest a possible relationship between the inheritance of blood groups and the natural defence mechanism against syphilis.
