[Effect of dietary correction and administration of multivitamin preparations on providing rural technical school students with vitamin C and B 1].

Actual nutrition and providing with vitamins C and B1 were studied in students of rural trade school (youths aged 16-17 years) in the town of Volsk, the Saratov region. The actual nutrition was corrected by inclusion of curds and other milk and vegetable products into the ration. The content of ascorbic acid in the usual and corrected rations, estimated analytically, during spring comprised 17 and 29%, and vitamin B1--49 and 75% of the recommended standard. The insufficient providing of the students with vitamins C and B1 in spring was confirmed by their low level of excretion with urine, and

[Vitamin B1, PP and C allowances of weight lifters and their requirements during training and competition periods].

Supply of the organism with vitamins C, B1 and PP during various periods of the training cycle was studied in 25 top-class athletes. All of them showed a decreased supply with vitamins, specifically low levels being recorded during competitions. Recommendations are offered with respect to dosage of the vitamins and duration of their administration in order to assist in correcting vitamin deficiency revealed.

[Stress due to immobilization and low protein intake in rats. Biochemical changes].

Rats fed a control casein diet, when exposed to immobilization, loose more nitrogen, urea and vitamin C in urine. Animals receiving a protein deficient diet excrete less nitrogen, urea and ascorbic acid in urine than their controls. When protein deficiency and immobilization are associated, there is not an increase on the urinary excretion of those substance compared to the deficient animals.

[Methemoglobinemia; a description of a case of NADH methemoglobulin reductase deficiency].

A case of NADH-methaemoglobin-reductase deficiency in a 64 year old man with marked cyanosis and without evidence of cardiac or pulmonary diseases is reported. The level of methaemoglobin was 36% and reached 25% after treatment with ascorbic acid. Erythrocyte NADH-methaemoglobin-reductase activity was only 5% of normal value. Some erythrocyte biochemical and enzymatic characteristics have been evaluated. A family study has also been carried out. Our patient has been considered homozygous for NADH-methaemoglobin-reductase deficiency.

Interactions between folate and ascorbic acid in the guinea pig.

Possible interactions between folic acid (folate) and ascorbic acid (AA) have been suspected because megaloblastic anemia is occasionally observed in scorbutic patients, and it may or may not respond to folate treatment. Male weanling guinea pigs were fed diets containing high levels of folate and AA or diets deficient in one or both vitamins. A total of 36 animals, including 9 controls, were studied. When anorexia began to appear in the deficient groups, all animals were killed by exsanguination, and tissue samples (blood, liver, adrenal, kidney, spleen, and intestinal mucosa) were removed fo

[Vitamin C].

Vitamin C or ascorbic acid is a hydrosoluble vitamin derived from glucose metabolism. It acts as a reductor agent required for synthesis of … ronic diseases such as cancer or diabetes or those who smoke need higher doses in their usual diet. Ascorbic acid deficiency gives rise to the appearance of scurvy. This disease is rarely seen in developed countries. The symptoms develop with plasma levels below 0.15 mg/dL. Scurvy is characterized by the presence of weakness, joint pain or skin lesions in form of petechia …

[Effect of amino acid imbalance and ascorbic acid deficit on the carcinogenic effect of N-nitrosopiperidine].

A study was made of the effect of ascorbic acid deficiency and low levels of lysine, methionine and threonine on the cancerogenic effect of nitrosopiperidine which was fed to guinea-pigs with drinking water in a single dose of 4.25 mg/kg bw. Deficiency of the nutrients given alone or especially in combination speeded up the growth tumors induced by the cancerogenic agent. A possibility of inducing esophageal tumors in guinea-pigs has been demonstrated for the first time.

Nutritional deficiency anemias in nonhuman primates.

The purpose of this report is to review past studies in which anemias, occurred spontaneously in nonhuman primates due to feeding inadequate diets or were induced by feeding diets deficient in a nutrient. Included is a review of anemias induced by deficiencies of iron, niacin, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, protein, riboflavin, cyanocobalamin, folic acid, ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol. The anemia induced by deficiency of each nutrient is discussed with emphasis on the major clinical signs as well as peripheral blood and bone marrow pathology. Results of supplementation of the diet followin

Phenazopyridine-Induced Methemoglobinemia in a Jehovah's Witness Treated with High-Dose Ascorbic Acid Due to Methylene Blue Contradictions: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Methemoglobinemia is an acute medical emergency that requires prompt correction. Physicians should have a high degree of suspicion of methemoglobinemia in cases that present with hypoxemia that does not resolve with supplemental oxygenation, and they should confirm this suspicion with a positive methemoglobin concentration on arterial blood gas. There are multiple medications that can induce methemoglobinemia, such as local anesthetics, antimalarials, and dapsone. Phenazopyridine is an azo dye used over-the-counter as a urinary analgesic for women with urinary tract infections, and it has also

Influence of dietary magnesium on mineral, ascorbic acid and glutathione concentrations in tissues of a freshwater fish, the common carp.

Supplementation with dietary Mg at a minimum level of 0.06% seems to be essential to prevent the hypercalcinosis of the kidney and hepatopancreas in a fish, the common carp. Mg deficiency appears to have no effect on the Mg level in kidneys and hepatic tissue, whereas the Fe level in those tissues was significantly diminished by increasing dietary Mg supplementation up to 3.2 g.kg-1. Both hypercalcinosis and accumulation of Fe in soft tissues were more pronounced in fish offered diets high in protein (44%) compared to fish on low dietary protein (25%). The ascorbic acid in the hepatopancreas a
