East-West gradient in cardio-vascular mortality in Austria: how much can we explain by following the pattern of risk factors?

BACKGROUND: Various studies show major regional differences in the prevalence of cardio-vascular disease morbidity and mortality, both in Europe and within European countries. In Austria, these differences are documented by an East-West gradient with declining morbidity and mortality rates when moving from the East to the West of the country. It was the aim of this study to analyse if, and to what extent, socio-demographic and socio-economic determinants, social resources and health behaviour can contribute to the clarification of this East-West gradient by conducting secondary analyses of an …

Genetic studies on toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) producing Staphylococcus aureus strains from Austria, the USA and West Germany.

DNA preparations obtained from 10 different toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 positive S. aureus strains from Austria, the USA and West Germany were examined in respect of their homology to the TSST-1 gene of pRN6101. Whole cell DNA was digested with HpaII or EcoRI, separated on agarose gels and transferred to nitrocellulose; furthermore the dotblot procedure was used. The radioactively labelled gene probe used was the 300 bp BamHI-HindII fragment of the TSST-1 gene region of pRN6101. All S. aureus strains had homology with this fragment. Homology was located on fragments of different molecular siz…

Tick-borne bacterial and protozoal pathogens in horses in Austria - A cross-sectional study on current and past infections and potential risk factors.

Tick-borne bacterial and protozoal pathogens are a major threat to equine health worldwide. In Austria, studies on pathogens such as piroplasms, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia spp. in horses are scarce and do not cover the countrywide horse population. To address this, blood samples from horses without prior record of infection with tick-borne pathogens (n = 588) were tested for the presence of Theileria equi, Babesia caballi or A. phagocytophilum DNA by PCR and for specific antibodies against these pathogens and Borrelia burgdorferi with commercially available assays. While no DNA of …

High-Speed Dental Instruments: An Investigation of Protein-Contaminated Dental Handpieces with the Bicinchoninic Acid Assay in Dental Offices in Styria, Austria.

Due to permanent contact with bodily secretions such as blood and saliva, the dental workplace poses a high risk of infection for patients as well as for personnel. High-speed dental instruments are still considered one of the major hygienic risks, as the high-speed rotation of the attachments leads to the retraction of infectious material from patients' oral cavities. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which dental handpieces are contaminated after use. Spray-water samples were taken from different handpieces used in seven dental offices and protein concentrations were mea

[Are there any volume-related effects on treatment options for patients with penile cancer? Results of a survey among university hospitals in Germany and Austria].

BACKGROUND: Currently, 959 men in Germany and 67 in Austria are diagnosed with penile cancer each year, with an increase of approximately 20% in the last decade [RKI 2021, Statcube.at 2023]. Despite the rising incidence, the number of cases per hospital remains low. The median annual number of penile cancer cases at university hospitals in the DACH region was 7 patients (IQR 5-10) in 2017 [E-PROPS group 2021]. The compromised institutional expertise due to low case numbers is compounded with inadequate adherence to penile cancer guidelines, as shown in several studies. The centralization, whic…
