An anatomical and physiological basis for the cardiovascular autonomic nervous system consequences of sport-related brain injury.

Concussion is defined as a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain that is induced by the application or transmission of trau … ual and vestibular systems. An emerging consequence of concussion is the presence of cardiovascular autonomic nervous system dysfunction that is most apparent through hemodynamic perturbations and provocations. Further interrogation of data that are derived from continuous digital electrocardiograms and/or beat-to-beat blood pressure monitoring often reveal an imbalance o …

Autonomic Nervous System Responses During Perception of Masked Speech may Reflect Constructs other than Subjective Listening Effort.

Typically, understanding speech seems effortless and automatic. However, a variety of factors may, independently or interactively, make listening more effortful. Physiological measures may help to distinguish between the application of different cognitive mechanisms whose operation is perceived as effortful. In the present study, physiological and behavioral measures associated with task demand were collected along with behavioral measures of performance while participants listened to and repeated sentences. The goal was to measure psychophysiological reactivity associated with three degraded

Autonomic nervous system under ketamine/ xylazine and pentobarbital anaesthesia in a Wistar rat model: a chronobiological view.

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of ketamine/ xylazine and pentobarbital anaesthesia on heart rate variability as a marker of autonomic nervous system activity. The experiments were performed in ketamine/ xylazine (10 mg/kg/15 mg/kg) and pentobarbital (40 mg/kg, i.p.) anaesthetized female Wistar rats, after adaptation to a light-dark cycle of 12 hours light: 12 hours dark. Heart rate variability parameters (RR interval, power VLF (very low frequency), power LF (low frequency), power HF (high frequency) and relative powers) were evaluated during spontaneous breathing as …

Association between mean platelet volume and autonomic nervous system functions: Increased mean platelet volume reflects sympathetic overactivity.

BACKGROUND: Increased mean platelet volume (MPV) may reflect increased platelet activation or increased numbers of large, hyperaggregable platelets, and is accepted as an independent coronary risk factor. The adrenergic system has effects on platelet activation and thrombocytopoiesis. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of autonomic nervous system activity on MPV in patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI). METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-seven patients with acute anterior MI were compared with 32 patients with healthy coronary arteries. All patients underwent heart rate (HR) variability analy…

Atrial and ventricular refractoriness in paced patients; circadian variation and its relationship to autonomic nervous system activity.

AIMS: To examine whether atrial and ventricular effective refractory periods exhibit circadian variation and whether the latter is correlated with fluctuations in autonomic nervous system tone. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 24 patients aged 67.1 +/- 9.6 years, 11 of whom were paced for complete heart block and 13 for sick sinus syndrome. Atrial and ventricular effective refractory periods were measured bihourly over a 24-h period, using the pacemaker programming capabilities, at basic cycle lengths of 600 ms and 500 ms. During the same time period we evaluated autonomic nervous system activ…

Autonomic nervous system activity associated with postural disturbances in patients with perilymphatic fistula: sympathetic or vagal origin?

The study focused on patients suffering from perilymphatic fistula (PLF), whether they had undergone surgery or not. Vestibular disturbances can be harmless but are associated with varying symptoms, demonstrating disorders within the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The aim was to test whether the orthosympathetic is involved as the vagal part is often suspected of eliciting a feeling of sickness. Non-invasive and uninterrupted recording of ANS activity represents an objectivation technique to evidence such disturbances. Electrodermal activity, thermovascular variables, instantaneous cardiac ra…

Autonomic nervous system tone measured by baroreflex sensitivity is depressed in patients with end-stage liver disease.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic liver disease is often associated with impairment of autonomic nervous system (ANS) reflexes. Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) testing is an inexpensive, relatively noninvasive test that can be used to assess ANS tone. The aims of the present study were to determine the prevalence of ANS dysfunction in cirrhotics who are being considered for liver transplantation and to explore the potential use of BRS as a prognostic tool in identifying patients awaiting transplantation who are at increased risk for death. METHODS: We studied nine cirrhotics who were awaiting liver transplant…

Effect of autonomic nervous system manipulations on gastric myoelectrical activity and emotional responses in healthy human subjects.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the gastric myoelectrical and emotional responses provoked by two psychophysiological stimuli known to cause in one case increased sympathetic nervous system activity and in the other increased parasympathetic nervous system activity. METHODS: Electrogastrograms (EGGs) were recorded, and interbeat intervals (IBIs) were obtained from electrocardiographic recordings from 20 subjects during baseline and in response to a shock avoidance task (shock stimulus) and forehead cooling (dive stimulus). After each experimental period, subjects reported th

Beta-cell, but not autonomic nervous system, function is related to MAFLD in early stages of glucose intolerance.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have suggested an association between beta-cell and autonomic function and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). We explored the association between controlled attenuated parameter (CAP) and insulin secretion and action, as well as sympathetic and parasympathetic activity in normal (NGT) and impaired (IGT) glucose tolerance. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty-five NGT (age 44.8±9.6 years; body mass index (BMI) 32.3±6.9 kg/m2) and 27 IGT (47.6±11.8 years; 31.0±6.5 kg/m2) subjects underwent a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and a mixed meal to

Interactions of central and autonomic nervous systems in patients with sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome during sleep.

PURPOSE: Sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) is an independent risk factor for various cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, but the underlying relationship of its physiological subsystems remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to investigate the effect of SAHS on central and autonomic nervous system (CNS-ANS) interactions during sleep. METHODS: Thirty-five patients with SAHS and 19 healthy age-matched controls underwent overnight polysomnography. The absolute spectral powers of five frequency bands from six EEG channels and ECG morphological features (HR, PR interval, QT interval) were calc…

Effects of physical exercise on the autonomic nervous system in patients with coronary artery disease: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Imbalance in autonomic modulation can occur after a cardiac event, which can lead to deleterious consequences. Exercise has proven to be a therapy which affects this modulation and can be assessed through heart rate variability (HRV). AREAS COVERED: The objective of this systematic review was to investigate the effects of physical exercise on heart rate variability in individuals with coronary artery disease (CAD). The PubMed, PEDro, Scielo, Lilacs and Cochrane databases were systematically searched, for articles which performed supervised exercises in phase II of cardiac rehabili

The autonomic nervous system of the human heart with special reference to its origin, course, and peripheral distribution.

A submacroscopic anatomical investigation of the entire autonomic cardiac nervous system, from origin to peripheral distribution, was performed by examining 36 sides of 18 adult human cadavers under a stereomicroscope. The following new results and points of discussion were obtained: (1) The superior cervical, the middle cervical, the vertebral, and the cervicothoracic (stellate) ganglia, composed of the inferior cervical and 1st thoracic ganglia, were mostly consistent among the specimens. (2) The superior, middle, and inferior cardiac nerves innervated the heart by simply following the desce

[The importance of the autonomic nervous system for sinus and atrioventricular node function in patients with sick sinus syndrome].

Autonomous nervous system (ANS) influence on sinus (SN) and atrioventricular (A-V N) nodes is still under investigation, especially in pathological states. We analysed role of ANS for SN and A-VN function in patients with different forms of sick sinus syndrome (SSS). From 310 patients (pts) after electrophysiological examinations before and after pharmacological denervation of the heart we selected 206 pts with SSS (group S) for further investigation. In group S were 124 men and 82 women from 17 years old (mean 46 +/- 16). Coronary heart disease was present in 102 pts (myocardial infarction in

The role of the autonomic nervous system in the depression of parotid salivary secretion during hyperkalaemia in conscious sheep.

The rate of flow and electrolyte concentration of parotid saliva were measured before, during and after intravenous and contralateral intracarotid infusion of KCl (0.5 mol.1(-1)) and NaCl (0.5 mol.1(-1)) at 385-625 mumol. min(-1) for 40 min into 5 sheep. In intact conscious sheep contralateral intracarotid infusion of KCl caused marked depression of salivary secretion in all experiments whereas infusion of NaCl had no consistent effect on flow. Intravenous infusion of KCl into the intact conscious sheep caused a slight depression of salivary secretion but minimum flow was significantly higher
