Cause-specific mortality in professional flight crew and air traffic control officers: findings from two UK population-based cohorts of over 20,000 subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Flight crew are exposed to several potential occupational hazards. This study compares mortality rates in UK flight crew to those in air traffic control officers (ATCOs) and the general population. METHODS: A total of 19,489 flight crew and ATCOs were identified from the UK Civil Aviation Authority medical records and followed to the end of 2006. Consented access to medical records and questionnaire data provided information on demographic, behavioral, clinical, and occupational variables. Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) were estimated for these two occupational groups using th…

Celiac disease: aeromedical considerations.

Celiac disease (CD) is an illness that affects up to 2% of the population. It primarily causes gastrointestinal symptoms, but it can also ca … h the diet can be very difficult. Aeromedical disposition of aircrews engaged in military and civil aviation would depend upon the nature of operations and, in some cases, could be liberal. However, for spaceflight, disqualification would be most prudent.

Elevated bilirubin and visual perception in pilots.

BACKGROUND: A fatal aircraft accident of a Bo-105 helicopter on May 20, 1996 led to the suspicion that the pilot's raised serum bilirubin level could have contributed to the accident. It was suspected that an increase of bilirubin beyond 20.52 micromol x L(-1) could disturb visual perception. METHODS: In 1998 and 1999, 101 pilots with functional hyperbilirubinemia, diagnosed as Gilbert's syndrome, were subjected to perceptual-psychological testing (signal detection test) during their periodic medical examinations at the German Air Force Institute of Aviation Medicine. The results of the psych…

Prevention of visual anxiety and proficiency problems in the senior air transport pilot.

Several actual cases were presented to show the problems encountered with flight deck vision in the middle-age presbyopic pilot both in the simulator and in flight. We have gained useful knowledge in the proper flight-deck needs and optical corrections for these pilots, which should be passed on to aviation examiners, eye specialists, and pilots themselves. This would relieve a great deal of unnecessary lost time and anxiety which results when the pilot has a correction unsuited for the cockpit and encounters extreme difficulty in simulator work and in actual flight conditions which he does no…

History of military psychology.

Military psychology is a specialist discipline within applied psychology. It entails the application of psychological science to military operations, systems and personnel. The specialty was formally founded during World War I in the UK and the USA, and it was integral to many early concepts and interventions for psychological and neuropsychological trauma. It also established a fundamental basis for the psychological assessment and selection of military personnel. During and after World War II, military psychology continued to make significant contributions to aviation psychology, cognitive t…

[Aerosinusitis: part 1: Fundamentals, pathophysiology and prophylaxis].

The relevance of aerosinusitis stems from the high number of flight passengers and the impaired fitness for work of the flight personnel. The frontal sinus is more frequently affected than the maxillary sinus and the condition generally occurs during descent. Sinonasal diseases and anatomic variations leading to obstruction of paranasal sinus ventilation favor the development of aerosinusitis. This Continuing Medical Education (CME) article is based on selective literature searches of the PubMed database (search terms: "aerosinusitis", "barosinusitis", "barotrauma" AND "sinus", "barotrauma" AN

A case of decompression sickness at 2,437 meters (8,000 feet).

Among aviators, decompression sickness is a condition that occurs almost exclusively at altitudes above 6,098 m (20,000 ft). Several reports have been published describing the development of decompression sickness after altitude exposures of 3,049 to 4,878 m (10,000-16,000 ft). In most of these cases, the affected individual had a previous history of pain in the involved area due to prior trauma or surgery, or had other risk factors for decompression sickness, such as obesity. Few of these reports have confirmed the presence of decompression sickness by a test of pressure. A case is reported h

Recovery of pupillomotor function after cataract surgery.

To determine the effect of cataract surgery upon pupillomotor function, we studied the pupillary response to light in four subjects who had extracapsular cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular lens. A video infrared pupillometer was used to record pupillary responses 6-20 weeks after surgery. Non-operated eyes were compared to operated eyes in each subject. Amplitudes and peak velocities of constriction for operated versus non-operated eyes differed over a small range (2-14%). No evidence of dilation lag or segmental palsy was found in the operated eyes. The latency of constri

Comparative evaluation of central serous retinopathy in pilots and non-pilot patients: Retrospective study of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC).

BACKGROUND: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a disqualifying condition for pilots because of the importance of good vision to their jobs. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical diagnosis, treatment, and aviation medical assessment principles for CSC in military pilots. METHODS: The clinical data and aviation medical assessments of 15 pilots with CSC who were admitted to the Air Force Medical Center between January 2003 and December 2021 were analyzed, and three typical cases were reported. The relevant literature evaluation was conducted on 32 non-pilot patients wit…

Are "Human Factors" the Primary Cause of Complications in the Field of Implant Dentistry?

Complications in medicine and dentistry are usually analyzed from a purely technical point of view. Rarely is the role of human behavior or judgment considered as a reason for adverse outcomes. When the role of human factors is considered, these are usually described in general terms rather than specifically identifying the factors responsible for an adverse event. The impact of cognitive and behavioral factors in the explanation of adverse events has been studied in other high-stakes areas such as aviation and nuclear power. Specific protocols have been developed to reduce rates of human erro…

Effects of positive acceleration on the metabolism of endogenous carbon monoxide and serum lipid in atherosclerotic rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Atherosclerosis (AS) is caused mainly due to the increase in the serum lipid, thrombosis, and injuries of the endothelial cells. During aviation, the incremental load of positive acceleration that leads to dramatic stress reactions and hemodynamic changes may predispose pilots to functional disorders and even pathological changes of organs. However, much less is known on the correlation between aviation and AS pathogenesis. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 32 rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups with 8 rabbits in each group. The control group was given a high cholesterol die…

Eye movements to yaw, pitch, and roll about vertical and horizontal axes: adaptation and motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: In the search for parameters to predict motion sickness that can be measured in the laboratory, we performed a longitudinal investigation in aviators. Since the vestibular system is involved in the generation of motion sickness as well as eye movements, vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) parameters seemed relevant. We investigated three topics: 1) the effect of axis orientation and its orientation to gravity on the VOR; 2) changes in VOR parameters depending on flight experience; and 3) differences in VOR parameters in aircrew with high and low susceptibility to motion sickness. Airline business continuity and IT disaster recovery sites.

Business continuity is defined as the capability of the organisation to continue delivery of products or services at acceptable predefined levels following a disruptive incident. Business continuity is fast evolving to become a critical and strategic decision for any organisation. Transportation in general, and airlines in particular, is a unique sector with a specialised set of requirements, challenges and opportunities. Business continuity in the airline sector is a concept that is generally overlooked by the airline managements. This paper reviews different risks related to airline processe
