Root Coverage Predictability in the Treatment of Gingival Recessions on Mandibular Anterior Teeth.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular anterior teeth are most frequently affected by gingival recession. However, data regarding mucogingival treatment aimed at root coverage in this specific location are limited. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to systematically review the scientific literature and to use the meta-analytic approach to address the following focused question: "What is the effectiveness of different surgical approaches on clinical and patient-related outcomes in the treatment of buccal gingival recessions on mandibular anterior teeth?" METHODS: Studies were located by searching 3

Longitudinal symptomatic interactions in long-standing schizophrenia: a novel five-point analysis based on directed acyclic graphs.

BACKGROUND: Recent network models propose that mutual interaction between symptoms has an important bearing on the onset of schizophrenic disorder. In particular, cross-sectional studies suggest that affective symptoms may influence the emergence of psychotic symptoms. However, longitudinal analysis offers a more compelling test for causation: the European Schizophrenia Cohort (EuroSC) provides data suitable for this purpose. We predicted that the persistence of psychotic symptoms would be driven by the continuing presence of affective disturbance. METHODS: EuroSC included 1208 patients rando

A Machine Learning Strategy for Drug Discovery Identifies Anti-Schistosomal Small Molecules.

Schistosomiasis is a chronic and painful disease of poverty caused by the flatworm parasite Schistosoma. Drug discovery for antischistosomal compounds predominantly employs in vitro whole organism (phenotypic) screens against two developmental stages of Schistosoma mansoni, post-infective larvae (somules) and adults. We generated two rule books and associated scoring systems to normalize 3898 phenotypic data points to enable machine learning. The data were used to generate eight Bayesian machine learning models with the Assay Central software according to parasite's developmental stage and exp

Revisiting the genome-wide significance threshold for common variant GWAS.

Over the last decade, GWAS meta-analyses have used a strict P-value threshold of 5 × 10-8 to classify associations as significant. Here, we use our current understanding of frequently studied traits including lipid levels, height, and BMI to revisit this genome-wide significance threshold. We compare the performance of studies using the P = 5 × 10-8 threshold in terms of true and false positive rate to other multiple testing strategies: (1) less stringent P-value thresholds, (2) controlling the FDR with the Benjamini-Hochberg and Benjamini-Yekutieli procedure, and (3) controlling the Bayesian

Deconvolving breath alcohol concentration from biosensor measured transdermal alcohol level under uncertainty: a Bayesian approach.

The posterior distribution (PD) of random parameters in a distributed parameter-based population model for biosensor measured transdermal alcohol is estimated. The output of the model is transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC), which, via linear semigroup theory can be expressed as the convolution of blood or breath alcohol concentration (BAC or BrAC) with a filter that depends on the individual participant or subject, the biosensor hardware itself, and environmental conditions, all of which can be considered to be random under the presented framework. The distribution of the input to the mode

Williams syndrome: on the role of intellectual abilities in anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Williams syndrome (WS) have an elevated risk for anxiety disorders throughout the life span, making it a research priority to identify the individual factors associated with anxiety. Most of the existing literature is based on questionnaire data and suggests that impaired executive functions (EF) increase the risk for anxiety in WS. The aim of this study was to use direct measures by trained clinicians to investigate the effects of general intelligence, inhibition, sustained attention, and working memory on anxiety in WS, to further elucidate potential underlying m

Exploring machine learning to predict depressive relapses of bipolar disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mood disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of mania or hypomania and depression, expressed by changes in energy levels and behavior. However, most of relapse studies use evidence-based approaches with statistical methods. With the advance of the precision medicine this study aims to use machine learning (ML) approaches as a possible predictor in depressive relapses in BD. METHOD: Four accepted and well used ML algorithms (Support Vector Machines, Random Forests, Naïve Bayes, and Multilayer Perceptron) were applied to the Systematic Treatme

An individual level infectious disease model in the presence of uncertainty from multiple, imperfect diagnostic tests.

Bayesian compartmental infectious disease models yield important inference on disease transmission by appropriately accounting for the dynamics and uncertainty of infection processes. In addition to estimating transition probabilities and reproductive numbers, these statistical models allow researchers to assess the probability of disease risk and quantify the effectiveness of interventions. These infectious disease models rely on data collected from all individuals classified as positive based on various diagnostic tests. In infectious disease testing, however, such procedures produce both fa

Longitudinal-Survival Models for Case-Based Tuberculosis Progression.

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) disease continues to be responsible for a high global burden with an estimated 10 million people falling ill each year and an estimated 1.45 million deaths. Widely carried out analyses to utilize routine data coming from this disease, and well-established in literature, have paid attention to time-to-event with sputum smear results being considered only at baseline or even ignored. Also, logistic regression models have been used to demonstrate importance of sputum smear results in patient outcomes. A feature presented by this disease, however, is that each indiv

Generalized additive regression for group testing data.

In screening applications involving low-prevalence diseases, pooling specimens (e.g., urine, blood, swabs, etc.) through group testing can be far more cost effective than testing specimens individually. Estimation is a common goal in such applications and typically involves modeling the probability of disease as a function of available covariates. In recent years, several authors have developed regression methods to accommodate the complex structure of group testing data but often under the assumption that covariate effects are linear. Although linearity is a reasonable assumption in some appl

Pooled 3-Anatomic-Site Testing for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pooled testing for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) may be a cost-saving solution to increase screening by simplifying testing procedures and reducing resource burdens. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the performance of pooled 3-anatomic-site testing (pharyngeal, rectal, and urogenital sites) for CT and NG in comparison with single-anatomic-site testing. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science to identify original evaluation studies of the performance of pooled testing for CT

A Bayesian Approach for Determining the Relationship Between Various Elongate Mineral Particles (EMPs) Definitions.

A variety of dimensions (lengths and widths) of elongate mineral particles (EMPs) have been proposed as being related to health effects. In this paper, we develop a mathematical approach for deriving numerical conversion factors (CFs) between these EMP exposure metrics and applied it to the Minnesota Taconite Health Worker study which contains 196 different job exposure groups (28 similar exposure groups times 7 taconite mines). This approach comprises four steps: for each group (i) obtain EMP dimension information using ISO-TEM 10312/13794 analysis; (ii) use bivariate lognormal distribution t

The design of a Bayesian platform trial to prevent and eradicate inhibitors in patients with hemophilia.

Among individuals with the rare congenital bleeding disorder hemophilia A, the major challenge is inhibitor formation, which is associated with significant morbidity and cost. Yet, as the optimal approach to prevent and eradicate inhibitors is not known, we are at equipoise. Because classic trial design is not practical in a rare disease setting, we designed 2 48-week randomized trials comparing ELOCTATE and emicizumab to prevent and eradicate inhibitors. To achieve statistical efficiency, we incorporated historic data (Bayesian priors) on inhibitor formation to allow preferential randomizatio

What every clinician should know about Bayés syndrome.

Bayés syndrome is a new clinical entity, characterized by the association of advanced interatrial block (IAB) on surface electrocardiogram with atrial fibrillation (AF) and other atrial arrhythmias. This syndrome is associated with an increased risk of stroke, dementia, and mortality. Advanced IAB is diagnosed by the presence of a P-wave ≥ 120ms with biphasic morphology (±) in inferior leads. The cause of IAB is complete Bachmann bundle blockade, leading to retrograde depolarization of the left atrium from areas near the atrioventricular junction. The anatomic substrate of advanced IAB is fibr

Molecularly imprinted sol-gel/Au@Ag core-shell nano-urchin localized surface plasmon resonance sensor designed in reflection mode for detection of organic acid vapors.

A molecularly imprinted sol-gel (MISG)/Au@Ag core-shell NU sensor is proposed for organic vapor detection in an optical fiber-based reflection mode. The compact structure design of the system in the reflection model is promising for practical use as a portable and rapid responsivity sensing probe. Volatile organic acids (OAs) are analogs to biogenetic volatile organic vapors related to specific human diseases. Here, Au@Ag core-shell nano-urchins exhibiting branched tips were synthesized and deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass in small dimer and trimmer clusters to generate an enhanced el
