Risky behaviors, including unsafe sex, aggression, rule breaking, self-injury, and dangerous substance use have become a growing issue for U.S. veterans returning from combat deployments. Evidence in nonveteran samples suggests that risky behaviors reflect efforts to cope with and alleviate depressive and/or anxious symptoms, particularly for individuals with poor emotion-regulation skills. These associations have not been studied in veterans. Rumination, or repeated thoughts about negative feelings and past events, is a coping strategy that is associated with several psychopathologies common

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the extent to which manic symptoms might influence the self-report ratings of adolescents as compared to parent and teacher ratings, although there are clinical reasons to believe that mania would increase disagreement.
METHODS: Parents and youths between the ages of 11 and 17 years were evaluated with the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children (KSADS), Young Mania Rating Scale, and Child Depression Rating Scale-Revised. Based on the KSADS results, subjects were assigned to either a bipolar spectrum group (e.g., meeting cri

BACKGROUND: The treatment of painful diabetic neuropathy is still a clinical problem. The aim of this study was to determine whether astaxanthin, a substance that inhibits mitogen-activated protein kinases, activates nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and influences N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor, affects nociceptive transmission in mice with diabetic neuropathy.
METHODS: The studies were performed on streptozotocin-induced mouse diabetic neuropathic pain model. Single intrathecal and intraperitoneal administrations of astaxanthin at various doses were conducted in both males and fema

Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are characterized by diffuse spread of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) throughout the brain. Patients with PDD and DLB have a neuropsychological pattern of deficits that include executive dysfunction, such as abnormalities in planning, timing, working memory, and behavioral flexibility. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) plays a major role in normal executive function and often develops α-syn aggregates in DLB and PDD. To investigate the consequences of α-syn pathology in the cortex, we injected human α-syn pre-formed fibrils into the PFC

Appalachian women face significant health disparities and have limited access to health care. Mental health conditions and treatment-seeking are stigmatized in Appalachian communities. Appalachian women may benefit from web-based interventions targeting less stigmatized health complaints (e.g., insomnia), while simultaneously yielding benefit in associated mental health conditions including symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this study, 37 trauma-exposed adult women aged 45 and older from rural Appalachian Kentucky completed a six-session online self-administered cognitive b

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative brain disease that causes cognitive impairment in the elderly. Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), also known as neuropsychiatric symptoms, represent a heterogeneous group of non-cognitive symptoms and behaviors for AD patients. Sleep disorder is one closely-related psychiatric symptom of AD. In this cross-section study, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of sleep status and BPSD among AD patients in Eastern China and to assess the relationship among sleep disorder, BPSD, and cognition.A total of 176 par
