Exploring perspectives regarding death cafés for people experiencing homelessness: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) often die at a younger age than the general population. Advanced ill-health often occurs late in its trajectory (if at all), leaving many PEH to die without adequate support from hospital-based, hospice-based or community-based palliative care services. Despite the high rate of bereavement and exposure to death among PEH, there are rarely opportunities for them to reflect on their experiences, thoughts and preferences around death or receive bereavement support. Death cafés are a global social franchise, providing a space for people to partici…

Prolonged Grief Disorder Among Relatives of Deceased Patients in Intensive Care Unit During the French COVID-19 Lockdown: Results From the OLAF Study.

The death of a relative in an intensive care unit (ICU) represents a major psychological burden. During the first COVID-19 lockdown in France, strict visiting restrictions profoundly altered end-of-life experiences and bereavement. In this context, our University Hospital implemented OLAF, a temporary ICU-psychiatry liaison phone-support service for relatives. We conducted a one-year prospective follow-up study of relatives bereaved after an ICU death. The primary outcome was the prevalence of Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) at 12 months. Secondary analyses explored the association between grie…

Between hope and harm: Digital coping during the anticipatory phase of violent loss.

Violent loss poses profound psychological challenges when families endure uncertainty before death is confirmed. This study extends coping theory into the digital realm by examining how coping unfolds through online networks during the anticipatory phase of bereavement following the Nova Festival massacre in Israel. Grounded in a social constructionist approach, in-depth interviews with bereaved family members, partners, and friends explored digital coping during the two weeks of uncertainty after the attack. Findings reveal a complex matrix of individual and collective digital coping strategi…

The role of self-concept clarity in prolonged grief disorder.

Three studies using independent samples of bereaved individuals were conducted to examine the association of self-concept clarity (SCC) with symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), a debilitating syndrome than can develop after bereavement. Study 1 (N = 67) showed that lower SCC was associated with greater PGD severity, independent from self-concept content change. Using a retrospective design, Study 2 (N = 116) showed that a loss can coincide with a decline in SCC, the magnitude of which was associated with acute PGD severity. Study 2 also showed that the maintenance of PGD symptoms over …

Anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder 9 months after perinatal loss.

OBJECTIVE: Perinatal loss (stillbirth after 20 weeks of gestational age or infant death in the first month) impacts one to two infants per hundred live births in the United States and can be a devastating experience for parents. We assessed prevalence of anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) among bereaved and live-birth mothers. METHODS: We collaborated with the Michigan Department of Community Health to survey Michigan mothers with perinatal death or live birth. We measured symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder and OCD using validated wr

Adaptation and feasibility of a group intervention for parents after the loss of a co-parent to cancer: a mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: After the loss of a parent, families with minor children face psychosocial stressors. The bereaved parent has to deal with their own grief and at the same time support the children. Providing professional support to the parents can improve well-being of parents, children and the family as a whole. However, such manualised interventions are missing for the German context. This study aims to translate and culturally adapt the parent group 'Resilient Parenting for Bereaved Families' (RPBF) of the Family Bereavement Program for the German context specifically for loss …

Posttraumatic growth in parents long after their child's death from cancer-a cross-sectional survey in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: The death of a child is one of the most devastating experiences for parents, yet some may experience positive changes known as posttraumatic growth (PTG). We aimed to describe PTG in bereaved parents whose child died of cancer, compare it to PTG in parents of childhood cancer survivors, and identify sociodemographic and child-related characteristics associated with PTG in bereaved parents. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study included parents who lost a child to cancer (diagnosed ≤ 18 years and > 1 year after death). Data from the Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study-P

Sudden cardiac death in adults: causes, incidence and interventions.

Many nurses will be familiar with the unexpected death of an adult patient following a sudden, life-threatening cardiac event. It is a situation that demands sensitive nursing care and skilled interventions to provide a foundation for recovery and promote healthy bereavement. This article examines the causes and incidence of sudden cardiac death in adults. Possible reactions of those who are suddenly bereaved are described and immediate care interventions aimed at dealing with the grief process are discussed. The article concludes by identifying ways in which the incidence of sudden cardiac de…

When grief persists online: Development of the Digital Prolonged Grief Severity Scale.

Bereaved individuals encounter the deceased through social media profiles, message histories, and algorithmic reminders, yet no validated instrument measures prolonged grief expressed through digital interactions. We developed and validated a multidimensional measure of digital-environment prolonged grief severity (DPGSS). Turkish bereaved adults (n = 577) bereaved at least 12 months earlier completed the DPGSS alongside grief, distress, and other less relevant measures, and 125 completed it again about three weeks later. Factor analyses supported a four-factor structure-digital separation dis

"I know now I'm not really alone": Qualitative insights from children, parents and caregivers of unguided internet cognitive behavior therapy for grief in children.

There are few studies examining internet cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for grieving children. No studies have examined qualitative insights from children and parents/caregivers about views of internet interventions for grief. Bereaved children were recruited from a sample of 48 participants, aged 6-12 years, who had been randomized to the intervention arm of a four-week, unguided internet CBT intervention for grief. There were 17 participants, including nine bereaved children (Mage = 8.33 years, SD = 2.06; 56% female, 44% male) and eight parents/caregivers who engaged in a qualitative inter

Post traumatic growth among recent suicide loss survivors.

Despite many studies of post-traumatic growth among suicide bereaved, information is lacking on recent suicide loss survivors. We investigated this with a diverse national sample of 1132 American adults, experiencing a suicide loss during the last six years. Bereaved reported on their post-traumatic growth, mental health, PTSD, depression, grieving difficulties, perceived stigma, suicidal ideation, and other mental health indicators. Findings converged with results from metareview articles based upon 11 and 21 studies of longer-term suicide survivors, showing better self-rated mental health, l

Translation and evaluation of the Perinatal Grief Intensity Scale in Kenya and Uganda.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Stillbirth or neonatal death are distressing life experiences for parents. In many sub-Saharan African countries, bereavement care and support are inadequate. Context-appropriate interventions are needed to improve perinatal bereavement care. To assess whether these interventions work, reliable assessment tools are required. This study aimed to translate and evaluate the Perinatal Grief Intensity Scale [PGIS] for use among bereaved women in Kenya and Uganda. METHODS: A mixed-methods study, involving cross cultural translation, adaptation and psychometric evaluation in Keny…

[The TRIG (Texas Revised Inventory of Grief) questionnaire. French translation and validation].

Bereavement and mourning are normal reactions to the loss of a loved one, characterized by specific ideas, affects, and behavior, evolving spontaneously towards resolution. This syndrome, classified as a non mental disorder (DSM IV), resembles depression. Up to now, there was no instrument for an objective assessment. The general objective of this work was to present the french version of the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, or TRIG (Faschingbauer, De Vaul & Zisook, 1981), designed to evaluate the intensity of the reaction to the loss of a loved one. Our population is composed of 154 adults o…

The Impact of Stillbirth on Maternal Wellbeing.

Several parents globally face stillbirth, which takes a toll on their mental health and well-being. We would like to discuss the differences between grief and mental health and ways care must be tailored toward the specific needs of the bereaved. Recent research shows that there is a sense of personal responsibility that accompanies stillbirth and pregnancy loss. Feelings of guilt and shame are common in bereaved mothers because their child's death occurred within their bodies. There is a lack of formal training and education that leave clinicians feeling helpless in the face of grief followin

Pathologic grief and its relationship to other psychiatric disorders.

The authors defined explicit criteria for the diagnosis of pathologic grief, and used the criteria to examine the relationship between pathologic grief and two disorders: major depression and anxiety disorders (panic and generalized anxiety), in a sample of 25 bereaved persons. Sixty-four percent of the sample met the criteria for pathologic grief. Pathologic grief was only significantly associated with major depressive disorder. It was also associated with high scores on dimensional measures of anxiety and depression. The most frequent complication of bereavement appeared to be an anxious sub…

Stress levels and health status of victims of a natural disaster.

Bereaved, property loss, and control groups (N = 155) were compared 11 months after the volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens using standardized instruments and structured interviews. It was hypothesized that the greater the loss the greater the stress and the poorer the health. Bereaved subjects reported significantly higher levels of stress and lower levels of mental health, but not physical health. Persons who lost their permanent homes reported high rates of stress, but did not report significantly higher levels of depression, somatization, or poorer physical health. Conceptual and methodolo
