Suspected Energy Drink-Induced Acute Coronary Syndrome With Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

Overconsumption of energy drinks containing high levels of caffeine has been increasingly linked to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This case report describes a 24-year-old Caribbean-Black male with no prior comorbidities who experienced an aborted sudden cardiac death (SCD) after a recent energy drink binge a few hours prior to his ventricular fibrillation (VF) cardiac arrest. Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) was successfully performed for a dreaded widowmaker lesion, thought to have arisen as a sequela of his excessive energy drink intake. The clinician should be cog

Who are the young users of tobacco products? Prevalence and characteristics of Danish adolescents who have either smoked cigarettes, used alternative tobacco products, or used both.

AIMS: We examined characteristics (smoking in social relations, binge drinking, and well-being measures) of Danish 13-year-olds in relation to their tobacco use patterns. Ever use of cigarettes exclusively, ever use of alternative tobacco products (ATPs; e-cigarettes, snus, or waterpipe) exclusively, and use of both cigarettes and ATPs were studied. METHODS: We used self-reported data from students at 46 Danish schools in 2017 comprising 2,307 students (response rate = 86%). Multi-level logistic regression analyses were used to examine the associations between student characteristics and the …

Adverse Childhood Events are Related to the Prevalence of Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder Among Adult Women in Hawaii.

PURPOSE: In the US, women surpass men in the prevalence of lung diseases. Limited studies exist on the association of adverse childhood events (ACEs) to asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) particularly among women and cohorts of understudied populations (e.g., Pacific Islanders). This study evaluated the ACEs-asthma and ACEs-COPD relationships among women in Hawaii and the contribution of poor health factors (smoking, binge drinking, and obesity) in these associations. METHODS: Using data from 3363 women in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System-Hawaii, we assesse…

Cognitive Challenges Are Better in Distinguishing Binge From Nonbinge Drinkers: An Exploratory Deep-Learning Study of fMRI Data of Multiple Behavioral Tasks and Resting State.

BACKGROUND: Studies have identified imaging markers of binge drinking. Functional connectivity during both task challenges and resting state was shown to distinguish binge and nonbinge drinkers. However, no studies have compared the efficacy of task and resting data in the classification. HYPOTHESIS: Task outperforms resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in the differentiation of binge and nonbinge drinkers. We tested the hypothesis via multiple deep learning algorithms. STUDY TYPE: Cross-sectional; retrospective. POPULATION: A total of 149 binge (107 men) and 151 …

Influence of positive consequences on subsequent incentive ratings and drinking quantity.

Alcohol use is prevalent among young adults, with significant rates of binge drinking and frequent reports of both positive and negative consequences. The current study investigates how positive drinking consequences influence subsequent incentives ratings and drinking behavior. Utilizing mobile daily diary data from 104 young adults over two weeks (event N = 507), we assessed the impact of event-specific positive consequences on future incentive ratings and drinking quantity. Findings revealed that positive consequences were not consistently associated with higher sensitivity to incentives, o…

Development of the EEG between 30 and 40 weeks gestation in normal and alcohol-exposed infants.

A total of 441 newborn infants with gestational ages between 30 and 40 weeks had EEG studies between 36 and 48 hours after birth. Their mothers had either abstained from alcohol during pregnancy or had ingested alcohol in one of four categories: occasional, moderate, binge or frankly alcoholic. The power of the EEG, using linear regression analysis, was significantly higher among infants of mothers in the occasional, binge and alcoholic categories than among infants of abstainers. Developmental changes in the EEGs of binge-drinking mothers were even more striking than in those of the offspring

Weekday distribution of alcohol consumption in Norway: influence on the occurrence of epileptic seizures and stroke?

Binge drinking at weekends is considered to be a predominant feature of alcohol consumption in the Nordic countries. Neurological diseases, such as seizures and stroke, have been reported to occur in temporal relation to alcohol intoxication and withdrawal. We wanted to investigate weekday variances in alcohol consumption in relation to the onset of neurological symptoms in these disorders. Consecutive patients admitted for epileptic seizures (n = 142) and ischemic strokes (n = 91) were included in the study. Control groups were consecutively hospitalized sciatica patients (n = 181), outpatien…

Voluntary wheel-running reduces harmful drinking in a genetic risk model for drinking to intoxication.

Physical activity (PA) may provide an effective and equitable treatment option for addressing the harm associated with Alcohol Use Disorders (AUDs). Wheel-running (WR) - a well characterized rodent model of PA - reduces intake and craving for many drugs of abuse; however, its effects on models of harmful ethanol intake are mixed. This may in part be due to critical differences in drinking paradigm, genetics background, chronicity of ethanol, and the modality and duration of PA being tested. To compliment and extend prior work, we evaluated whether key stages of PA development would differentia

Subcortical serotonin 5HT2c receptor-containing neurons sex-specifically regulate binge-like alcohol consumption, social, and arousal behaviors in mice.

Binge alcohol consumption induces discrete social and arousal disturbances in human populations that promote increased drinking and accelerate the progression of Alcohol Use Disorder. Here, we show in a mouse model that binge alcohol consumption disrupts social recognition in females and potentiates sensorimotor arousal in males. These negative behavioral outcomes were associated with sex-specific adaptations in serotonergic signaling systems within the lateral habenula (LHb) and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST), particularly those related to the receptor 5HT2c. While both BNST a

A roadmap for adapting an evidence-based HIV prevention intervention: personal cognitive counseling (PCC) for episodic substance-using men who have sex with men.

Episodic (less than weekly) drug use and binge drinking increase HIV-related sexual risk behaviors among men who have sex with men (MSM), yet no evidence-based interventions exist for these men. We describe an adaptation process of the Personalized Cognitive Counseling (PCC) intervention for utilization with high-risk, HIV-negative episodic, substance-using MSM. Participants (N = 59) were racially diverse, and reported unprotected anal intercourse and concurrent binge drinking (85%), use of poppers (36%), methamphetamine (20%) and cocaine (12%). Semi-structured interviews with 20 episodic, sub…
