Osteogenic response to porous hydroxyapatite ceramics under the skin of dogs.

Soft tissue reactions to two materials of different microstructure made with porous and dense hydroxyapatite ceramic granules, were compared in this study. Each was implanted subcutaneously in the abdomen of 10 dogs. The implants were removed 1, 3 and 6 months after implantation, and examined by light microscopy. Heterotopic bone formation was only evident around porous hydroxyapatite ceramic granules in 6 of the 10 animals after 3 months, and in all cases after 6 months, but never around dense granules. These findings suggested that cellular differentiation and induction of osteogenesis may b

Cytocompatibility of novel tin oxide thin films.

The capacity of tin oxide films to support cell growth was investigated. Three substrates were used for the test: glass coverslips, glass coverslips spin coated with tin oxide and commercially available 316 stainless steel. The wettabilities and surface roughness of the three surfaces were measured before seeding 3T3 fibroblasts onto the samples. The behaviour of the cells grown on the tin oxide was compared to the uncoated glass and the steel and results showed that the cell growth on tin oxide compared favourably with the other substrates. The surface wettability appeared to have the stronge

Sulfated poly(aspartic acid) coatings as next-generation biomimetic interfaces for blood-contacting devices.

The increasing reliance on blood-contacting medical devices underscores the need for materials that minimise thrombosis and inflammation. Devices such as stents and dialysis membranes often face complications related to clot formation and microbial colonisation. To address these challenges, this study explored the development of sulfated poly(aspartic acid) (sPASP) coatings aimed at improving haemocompatibility and reducing infection risk. PASP, a biodegradable, biocompatible polymer, and calcium chelator, served as the base material, with sulfation introduced to enhance its antithrombotic, an

Glycosylation as a design component of biomaterials in implant design.

An implanted medical device is specified in detail through its bulk and surface chemistry, mechanical properties, architecture, degradation kinetics, and surface ligands, whereas the host receiving it is specified hardly at all. Much of what the host presents at that interface is glycan, and glycan-mediated recognition acts through defined receptor families, including the Siglecs, the C-type lectin receptors, the galectins, and the regulators of complement. The host glycome is not fixed. It is assembled combinatorially, varies with age, metabolic state, and inflammation, differs between recipi

Thioketal-Based Polymers for Biomedical Applications: Structure Design, Properties, And Perspectives.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly enriched in pathological microenvironments such as inflammation, tumors, and ischemia-reperfusion, providing an endogenous trigger for on-demand drug release, degradation, and clearance. The thioketal (TK) moiety is stable under normal physiological conditions but undergoes oxidative cleavage in elevated ROS environments, making it a foundational motif for designing ROS-responsive polymers. The TK-based polymers, including linear poly(thioketal) (PTK), polyurethanes, and hyperbranched polymers, enable precise control of degradation kinetics, mechanical

Ordered-Disorder Transition Induced Stretchable Collagen Ionic Gels Toward Flexible Sensors.

Natural structural proteins such as collagen offer exceptional biocompatibility and mechanical versatility, making them promising candidates for wearable and implantable sensing applications. However, achieving integrated high stretchability, stable electrical performance, and long-term durability in protein-based sensing materials remains a critical challenge. Conventional modification strategies are largely confined to molecular-scale adjustments, which often fail to simultaneously address these functional demands. This study introduces a fundamentally different approach by leveraging Hofmei

Highly Tough, Barrier, and Biodegradable Copolyesters Synthesized from Furandicarboxylic Acid.

Biobased polyesters based on 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid show great potential for replacing conventional plastics, but their practical applications are still limited by the inherent brittleness of the materials. A series of high molecular-weight poly(ethylene-diethylene glycol 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEDF) copolyesters were synthesized by introducing diethylene glycol, which contained a flexible oxygen ether bond. The thermal stability, mechanical properties, and optical transparency of the PEDF copolyesters improved significantly with the increasing diethylene glycol content. The elongation a

Regulation of Mitochondrial Homeostasis: Applications of Nanobiomaterials in Age-Related Bone Diseases.

Age-related bone diseases are a heterogeneous group of metabolic disorders characterized by progressive degenerative changes. Although nanobiomaterials have emerged as a promising means of regulation at the cellular level, their therapeutic efficacy remains very limited due to the lack of treatment strategies that directly target mitochondrial pathology. In recent years, nanobiomaterial therapies centered on mitochondria have attracted widespread attention. This review aims to critically evaluate the latest advances in this emerging field and categorize them into four main strategies: enhancin

It's not right, it's not even wrong.

Standard advice for new university graduates is to embrace failure. If you don't fail, you aren't pushing the boundaries. The title of this work, originally presented at a symposium at the 2024 World Biomaterials Congress in Daegu, South Korea. "Learning from Successful Failures in Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine", is a quote from Wolfgang Pauli, upon hearing a scientific presentation that disappointed him because it didn't even point to a better answer - it wasn't even wrong. Often our scientific contributions are incomplete or go only so far before they run up against unforeseen o
