OBJECTIVES: Assess the effect of re-expansive respiratory patterns associated to respiratory biofeedback (RBF) on pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength and habits in individuals with functional mouth breathing (FMB).
METHODS: Sixty children with FMB were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was submitted to 15 sessions of re-expansive respiratory patterns associated to RBF (biofeedback pletsmovent; MICROHARD((R)) V1.0), which provided biofeedback of the thoracic and abdominal movements. The control group was submitted to 15 sessions using biofeedback

UNLABELLED: Several authors have suggested that devices delivering altered auditory feedback (AAF) may be a viable treatment for adults and children who stutter. This paper reviews published, peer reviewed journal papers from the past 10 years that investigate the effect of AAF during different speaking conditions, tasks and situations. A review of that literature indicates that considerable experimental evidence and limited Phase 1 treatment outcome evidence has been accumulated about the effect of AAF on the speech of people who stutter. However, critical knowledge about the effect of AAF du

The current study was based on the hypothesis that chronic developmental stuttering in adults involves a deficiency in oral kinesthesia. The authors used a target-accuracy task to compare oral kinesthesia in adults who stutter (n = 17) and in normal speakers (n = 17). During the task, participants were instructed to make accurate jaw-opening movements in visual and nonvisual feedback conditions. The authors further contrasted oral movement control in a normal response time condition with that in a reaction time condition. Overall, the adults who stutter consistently made significantly less acc

Various agents are used for the medical management of chronic constipation but few have been carefully studied. This review examines available data concerning several bulk and fiber products, lubricating agents, stimulants, and osmotic laxatives, alone and in combination. Popular therapeutic options for initial treatment of chronic constipation are dietary fiber and medicinal bulk. Subsequent treatments if fiber is not successful or tolerated would include saline osmotic laxatives, lactulose, or stimulants like senna or bisacodyl. Recent data demonstrate polyethylene glycol laxative to be safe

An augmented auditory feedback device comprised of a thin membrane switch mini-buzzer, and battery is described as a modification of a previously described feedback device. The membrane switch can be customized for the patient and is designed to fit inside a patient's shoe without altering the heel height. Its appeal lies in its simplicity of construction, low cost, and ease of implementation during a patient's training for weight bearing and gait. An ever-present source of information, it provides performance-relevant cues to both patient and clinician about the occurrence, duration, and loca

BACKGROUND: Constipation after hysterectomy has been postulated to be due to pelvic nerve damage, but there may be emotional or reversible physical factors of pathophysiological relevance. The aim of this study was to determine whether such constipation is responsive to behavioural treatment.
METHODS: Three groups of patients who had completed a course of biofeedback treatment were compared: women with no history of abdominal or pelvic surgery (n = 25), women for whom a hysterectomy had led to no change in bowel function (n = 27) and women who stated that their constipation was precipitated (

BACKGROUND: Biofeedback for outlet obstruction constipation has a varying success rate. The aim of this study was to identify which patients are likely to respond to biofeedback.
METHODS: Thirty patients with severe outlet obstruction constipation were treated by a specialist nurse using three or four sessions of visual and auditory feedback of anal sphincter pressures. All patients were assessed by evacuating proctography, whole-gut transit studies and anorectal physiology before treatment.
RESULTS: Two patients did not complete the course of biofeedback. Nine patients improved. Before trea

Electromagnetic articulography (EMA) was explored as a means of remediating [s]/[symbol in text] articulation deficits in the speech of an adult with Broca's aphasia and apraxia of speech. Over a 1-month period, the subject was provided with 2 different treatments in a counterbalanced procedure: (1) visually guided biofeedback concerning tongue-tip position and (2) a foil treatment in which a computer program delivered voicing-contrast stimuli for simple repetition. Kinematic and perceptual data suggest improvement resulting from visually guided biofeedback, both for nonspeech oral and, to a l

Biofeedback has traditionally been used in the context of relaxation therapy along with stress management. Some recent studies have looked to extend the applicability of biofeedback by using it as a didactic tool for neuromotor rehabilitation. The present case is one in which an anoxic head-injury patient was unable to participate in transfers owing to a severe myoclonic condition. The patient was trained using an autogenic relaxation procedure along with EMG biofeedback modality to reduce the myoclonus and therefore participate actively with stand pivot transfers.

The objective of the present case study was to examine the therapeutic effects of thermal biofeedback-assisted autogenic training on a patient with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM), vascular disease, and symptoms of intermittent claudication. The patient received thermal biofeedback from the hand for five sessions, then from the foot for 16 sessions, while hand and foot skin temperature were monitored simultaneously. In addition, the patient was instructed in autogenic training and practiced daily at home. Follow-up measurements were taken at 12 and 48 months. Within-session foo

A behavioral treatment of scoliosis and kyphosis was tested with 27 adolescent patients (19 scoliosis, eight kyphosis patients) to determine in which cases the conspicuous and restraining brace treatment could be replaced. In 22 compliant patients, posture biofeedback (PB) was highly effective compared to five non-compliant patients. Biologically more mature scoliosis patients (menarche at the beginning of treatment) seemed to profit more from PB. With kyphosis patients the PB treatment resulted in rapid straightening of the spine and removal of structural deformities of Scheuermann's disease.

Although the usefulness of speech rehabilitation in disorders such as asphasia is now recognized, many clinicians estimate that speech treatments for dysarthrics are of limited value. The conceptual approach to dysarthrias is a physiological approach that emphasizes the component-by-component analysis of the peripheral speech mechanism. The selection and sequencing of treatment procedures follow directly from the physiological nature and severity of involvement in each component.

It has been proposed that symptomatic mitral valve prolapse may be associated with a hyperadrenergic state and/or increased anxiety. To test this hypothesis, Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety (STAI) scores and 24-hour urinary catecholamine collections were gathered from 11 children and adolescents without mitral valve prolapse, 6 with asymptomatic mitral valve prolapse, and 14 who had chest pain (some with additional symptoms of shortness of breath, palpitations, and fatigue). STAI scores and catecholamine excretion values were not significantly different between groups. Ten symptomatic patients

The plethora of terms included in the broad category of sympathetic dystrophies, and causalgia in particular, has made specific disorders, with unique clinical characteristics, very difficult to isolate into discrete clinical entities. Rather, the sympathetic dystrophies currently are regarded as existing along a continuum of varying severity and as having one basic pathophysiological mechanism, with considerable overlap of terms. The purposes of this article are 1) to review the theories of physiological mechanisms of causalgia and other forms of sympathetically maintained pain, 2) to describ

This study compared the effectiveness of biofeedback on pubococcygeal muscle strengthening and simple urinary stress incontinence in older and younger women. Women aged 55 years and older and women younger than 55 years of age were taught Kegel exercises, using biofeedback, for the treatment of simple urinary stress incontinence. Eighty percent of the younger group and 67% of the older group eliminated stress incontinence. Also, the younger women required less pubococcygeal strength than the older women to control incontinence.

Although compulsive polydipsia or self-induced water intoxication is known to occur with a relatively high frequency in psychiatric patients, much of the literature has focused on medication treatment and interactions; little has been written describing alternative methods of intervention. This paper describes an inpatient treatment using both EMG biofeedback and response prevention. The relationship between compulsive appetitive behaviors and more classic presentations is discussed. Because the patient was treated on the endocrine service, the importance of adequately training non-psychiatric

Peripheral physiological activity and verbal ratings of tension and nervousness were assessed during instructed relaxation, and relaxation assisted by feedback of skin conductance level (SCL). Sixteen volunteers attempted to use each strategy in turn in a cross-over design. Responses were monitored both during quiet relaxation, and throughout the performance of taxing cognitive tasks. Th electrodermal feedback made no difference to the reductions in SCL, heart rate or subjective ratings, when relaxation was carried out in undisturbed conditions. Following training, reactions to cognitive tasks

Thirty-six male undergraduate students were instructed to raise or lower heart rate in a multiple-session biofeedback experiment. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure, frontalis electromyographic activity, and skin conductance level were simultaneously recorded throughout biofeedback training. Principal axes factor analyses showed that physiological response patterning concomitant with the development of heart rate control was different early in training (Training Session 1) than it was late in training (Training Session 4) for both speeding and slowing conditions. These results indicate that
