Octacyanated tridecacyclene was synthesized from novel brominated tridecacyclene. In the crystal, the saddle-shaped scaffold exhibits a zigzag packing motif governed by an interplay between the inherent geometry of the central cyclooctatetraene moiety and the hydrogen bonding mediated by the dipolar cyano functionalities. The compound undergoes five reversible reductions in a particularly narrow potential window of 1.15 V in CH2Cl2. The first reduction occurs at -0.78 V (vs. Fc/Fc+), which corresponds to a remarkably low-lying LUMO of -4.32 eV.

A concise total synthesis of (-)-exiguolide has been completed in an overall 2.8% yield over 20 steps in the longest linear path. The key strategies involve (1) Prins cyclization/homobromination of dienyl alcohol with the B ring-substituted aldehyde, prepared by Prins cyclization/bromination, to construct the A ring with excellent cis-Z stereochemical control and (2) an unusual side chain installation/macrocyclization strategy featuring Sonogashira cross-coupling followed by a ring-closing metathesis reaction to deliver the target.

There is a tendency to substitute frequently used, but relatively hazardous brominated flame retardants (BFRs) with halogen-free flame retardants (HFFRs). A series of six α-bromoketones derived from lithocholic acid was synthesized through an oxidative bromination reaction, with four of these compounds being reported for the first time. All products were characterized using NMR, IR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The structures and crystalline packing of two α-bromoketones were further confirmed through X-ray diffraction analysis. The antibacterial activity of the compounds was evaluated against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains of clinical relevance.

Hydrobromination and oxy-isomerization of (o-arylethynyl)benzyl alcohols to yield brominated aryl ketones were achieved with bromotrimethylsilane. The substrate scope suggested that vinyl carbocations, stabilized by the conjugated aryl groups, are the reaction intermediates. 1H-Isochromene was also detected by 1H NMR, and an isolated 1H-isochromene was converted to the product when retreated with TMSBr. The formation of 1H-isochromene is equivalent to a 6-endo-dig cyclization and contrasts with the corresponding reactions under basic conditions, in which the 5-exo-dig process dominated.

The concentrations of 16 polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners in six short sediment cores from the Clyde Estuary were determined by gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry. In this work, the synthesis, crystal structure, morphology, and optoelectronic properties of novel quasi low-dimensional hybrid (bromomethyl … d in (4-BrCH2PyH)PbBr3, which was presumably due to the small distance between the lead cations and bromine atoms of the 4-BrCH2PyH cations, resulting in a radiationless electronic transition.
